I honestly won't be. And if I am, there are so many wonderful agencies that my daughter has been involved with the years that I would love to volunteer with. Not to mention, taking care of my mom with congestive heart failure and dementia and my daughter, with her own issues. The more I think about it, the more I'm on board with Bernie!lol

i don't view this as "slacker state". i view this as "not being forced back to work at a critical stage of childrearing".
my mom stayed at home when i was little. after that, she had a 20 year career as a librarian.
you seem to think that PAYING for a benefit then USING IT is somehow "slacking", and i fervently disagree with that.
life is made up of various stages. for women, more than men. you start out as a dependent. you then go to work and build up benefits. then you take advantage of those benefits WHICH YOU HAVE PAID FOR. then you die.
i really don't get the attitude that if you take advantage of a paid-for benefit you are a slacker. even Trump doesn't think that.
Well, I paid for my own children so instead of getting the taxpayers to support me then, they can support me now. I have no desire to work, earn a significant living just to be taxed to death to pay for others. I'm done fighting and arguing. If the will of the americans is to vote in a socialist who wants everyone to live off the government teat, I will gladly do it. Let the next generation of people worry about how we are going to provide for everyone. I'm tired. Edited to clarify...I will not be able to benefit from free college or free paid years long maternity leave...so I will have to take early retirement to offset it. I'm not paying for a benefit that I will use years later, I would be paying for benefits for others that I will never benefit from. Socialist? You mean there will be no private businesses? The government will own everything from McDonald's to hotels to shoe companies to Disneyland?? How I wish some Americans would understand the true meaning of socialism!

We want free college, waiving of student loans, paid maternity for lord knows how long, free healthcare (yet do nothing about the actual COST of healthcare!). It is in my best interest to have free healthcare that is taxpayer funded as that is what is holding me back from retiring. But in the end, if we are going to be the land of the free stuff, I'm damn well taking advantage of it. Getting welfare would not give me a comfortable lifestyle so I would never go that route. But if I can live comfortably with a lot of taxpayer benefits, I will totally do it. ok, now we are getting somewhere. you know, I am not going to pester you any more, MT. I would describe that position as highly rational.
people in France feel precisely the same way. my point is that people in these countries are "happy" to pay for the benefits, for the most part- even those that don't take them- because they CAN take them. they just choose not to.
NOTE: BOTH my parents had FREE COLLEGE. that was the norm in the time they grew up. taxes paid for it. the top tax rate was 94% during most of the time they grew up.
Precisely! Things like mat leave, healthcare, extended vacations, affordable college, etc., benefit the whole country. My DS never went to college, but I'm happy to pay taxes to ensure we have an educated populace. Maternity leave leads to happy and healthy families, which in turn leads to a happy and healthy country.

societies that are not living "close to the edge" take MORE RISKS with their OPPORTUNITIES (this is a fact, by the way, not just some ass pulling). if the local JC starts a class in website design, they quit their shitty job and take a FREE class for retraining, using their VACATION TIME and maybe a government stipend that pays some of their REEDUCATION expenses. the result is that the person ends up with a better paying job, pays more taxes, is healthier, and is happier. I don't really get why Americans want other Americans to suffer as they have, but that is where we are @. and even some of the most liberal members of this board feel the same way. so, it occurs to me that we are doomed as a nation, because we can no longer put the liberty and wellbeing of others above our own. that is what it takes to build strong, vibrant societies, imo.

But it isn't just women paying for a benefit they would get. Only women of child-bearing age can every get paid maternity leave. If they want to buy disability insurance to pay for that leave, that would be them paying for their benefit. In Chiver's example, the employer would have to pay for the woman's maternity leave. In weltz's case, the tax payers pay for it. Unless you are suggesting that only women of child-bearing age pay the tax. This speaks to the point I was trying to make. It benefits society for women to take some time off with their babies but still be willing to return to the workforce if that's what they choose. After reading the flurry of responses today, it occurred to me. What if YM's two favorite topics are related?! What if the lack of maternity leave which forces women to return to work quickly during a baby's scientifically proven prime bonding time is the key difference causing some/most of our mass shootings? Hear me out, at the very least, I wonder if it causes so much of our mental health issues which I believe is part of the violence equation. At the very least, it's not such a hard leap to figure out that less vacation time and poorer benefits aren't improving mental health or just plain ol' family life.

So baby’s whose mom works but dad stays home will be a mass shooter? Or babies who are sick and spend months in the hospital have a higher chance of a mass shooting? For how much the feminists have complained about being stuck with the main parental role, everyone sure wants a lot of paid time off to to be “stuck at home”. I’ve even seen comments on here from several women that they couldn’t wait to get back to work. So do women have to stay or home they will risk having mass shooters or do we just like the fact that now we can get paid to sit home? Also, since it is all about equality now, so men also get a year paid to stay home with the baby? ETA: since it is for the best of society, should we demand that woman not work after giving birth? Because I think that’s how it was just a generation or two ago

Because I think that’s how it was just a generation or two ago Yep, that's what I said - SMH. For the record, I'm okay with either parent staying home. My DH stayed home for a year with our second. It's about providing parents with crucial bonding time with their infant. Making that bonding time long enough for the family to adjust and flourish. Giving the infant the best shot at becoming a productive member of society. I'm too lazy to go back and look who said it, but I agree it's utterly terrifying and demoralizing how many of our problems in the US can be summed up as me, me, me, me, me.

What is the difference between a maternity or paternity leave and a parental leave? Maternity leave is for biological mothers only. You take it while you are pregnant and after the baby is born. You can take a parental leave after your maternity leave. Paternity leave is for biological fathers only. You take it after the baby is born. You can take a parental leave after your paternity leave. Parental leave is for both parents, whether they are biological or adoptive. This time is dedicated to settling the new child into the family. Both parents can take a parental leave, at the same time or at different times, even if they have the same employer. Another type of leave is available for family and personal reasons. It is separate from the three types of leave explained above. Note: For couples made up of two women, the partner of the biological mother has a right to paternity and parental leave. However, the child must have been born in the context of what the law calls a parental project and the name of the partner must appear on the act of birth. www.educaloi.qc.ca/en/capsules/maternity-paternity-and-parental-leave

Because I think that’s how it was just a generation or two ago I'd be in favor of spousal leave, but we are not created equal. due to the presence of breasts on my wife, my son wanted nothing to do with me until he was walking.
and no, OUR society is not in a position to DEMAND anything of women. women, however, are in a position to DEMAND something of society, imo. and that is an opportunity to raise their children. to what extent is for SOCIETY to decide. in the case of most decent countries, it is 1-2 years. in our case, it is absolutely nil.

I am often amused when "the right" presumes to know how "the left" thinks. It is also curious that this mindset thinks an entire political spectrum thinks as one, with one exact view. How limiting! Here is an interesting concept, My wife was a stay at home mom, until my youngest started school!! no, it's not that interesting. It's pretty common. If it is, why the fight over paid time off? As an employer why should I pay someone time while they raise the baby?
Hey how about this, if I wanted to take off for some reason, How about all the employees chipping in a couple of weeks pay for me!!

Then why the constant complaining that we won't pay a mom to stay home with her baby for a year? are you the employer here, or a taxpayer? because yesterday you were complaining about taxpayers having to pay for an employer-offered perk. how do you feel about maternity leave in general? do you think that should be allowed, or should everyone just plan accordingly like you did? I mean, you keep reminding us that you grew up in shitty conditions and made yourself successful. if you can do it, anyone should be able to, amiright? is there a reason you are so insistent that everyone live their lives the way you do? She seem pretty successful to me, Owns property, has a great job, Had her family under her terms,,
I'd say a whole bunch of you wished you had her character, her ambition, and her success! You all are damned jealous!!

actually, I have no idea how successful MT or anyone else here is. I can guess at a few, but I have to admit that I know less about MT than most. and I like it that way.
I like her just fine as a poster. I admire her self sufficiency.
but candidly, I am really only jealous of one person on this whole entire planet. and no, it is not Trump.
I can admire people without being jealous of them. and vice versa.

Are you going to correct his penmanship?? No, your punctuation. Your second question mark is redundant. And do you know the definition of penmanship? I think not.
