Woman allegedly tracked obits to burglarize homes of families away at funeralsA 26-year-old New York woman is accused of tracking obituaries so that she could burglarize the homes of people away at funerals. Latonia Stewart, 26, of New York City was arraigned Wednesday on a 22-count indictment for a string of burglaries between 2017 and 2018. She faces multiple counts of burglary and larceny. Authorities in Westchester County north of New York City say Stewart looked at obituaries to find out when funerals were taking place, figured out where the decedent lived, and then targeted the homes of grieving family members. The Westchester County district attorney said people would return from funerals of their loved ones to ransacked homes, with windows broken and valuables gone. Stewart targeted homes in affluent suburbs of New York City, authorities said. Complete article here: Woman allegedly tracked obits to burglarize homes of families away at funerals

Sadly this behaviour is as old as public funeral notices.

Sadly this behaviour is as old as public funeral notices. So true. I know someone this happened to back in the 70 ‘s! Glad they caught this person though.

When DH#1 passed in 1998, my next door neighbor had her teen stay in our home during the memorial service.
We had our phone number listed in the phone book but not the address. A week later I received a phone message from someone saying he had the same last name we did and wanted to know if he was related. 'He was also in the local VA hospital and wanted a visit.' I had my BIL call back and talk to him ........ no relationship.
After DH#2 wife died he received a phone call from a real estate office saying his wife had contacted him about selling their home. He set them straight in a hurry.
Scammers will try anything ........ and grief really does blind you.

They also rob houses if they find out about weddings. Have to wonder about folks advertising their doings on social media.

My uncle was in a funeral procession for his wife and was hit by another car.
So his wife died, he missed the service at the cemetery to be taken to the hospital for broken bones, he got a ticket for running a red light AND his house was robbed during all of it.
The real unbelievable part is my uncle laughed about it and thought his wife would have found it hilarious, you know, knowing he ended up OK and all.

I won’t even go into the story on this end. Love your uncle’s sense of humor. My car, not me, was involved in an accident involving a funeral procession. I loaned my car to a friend. Won’t bore with details but you conjured up a blast from the past.

Well, glad my car wasn't involved then. But the circumstances were so close that I had to ask!

That has happened around here as well, sadly as someone else pointed out, scum have been taking advantage of funerals to rob homes for a long time.
