I'd get a newer riding lawn mower. I used to have a hired mower. They introduced weeds into my lawn that I never had before and some I cannot identify.

In our area it costs $40 - $75 depending on lawn size. We have just under 1/2 acre and they would charge about $40 - $45. DH mows our lawn, but I wish he would hire it out or get a riding mower. It takes him several hours to cut, use the string trimmer and sweeping up around the curbs of our corner lot.

My neighbors are sticklers, but super nice and helped me out. I love having a professional service. Came home from a business meeting today, and my lawn was done! The company is also going to help me with other landscaping including a large area of grading and new grass. I just don't have the time, energy or skills to do the work, so I pay them. And love it!

When my DH passed away last year, the decision was easy for me: I hired a lawn service. When you mow your lawn yourself you have total control of how often and at what height your lawn is mowed. That, along with the exercise, was my husband's rationale for mowing the lawn himself. One of the things I didn't like about the professional services was that they seemed to want to do it once a week regardless. It's certainly needed in the spring and the fall when it's cool and rainy, but not when it's hot and the growth slows down somewhat. I can understand that it would be chaos to juggle their schedules as the temperatures shifted, but I hate watching them run their mowers to cut 1/4" of growth and stir up a lot of dust and then getting billed for it. At some point I WILL farm out this work- just not ready for it. I do pay someone to apply chemicals. My service isn't like that- if we are having a serious dry spell and the grass isn't growing he will skip cutting it that week. I am only charged for the times he actually cuts my lawn.

That's why I like my neighbor cutting mine. He only cut it twice in July and it doesn't need mowing now. It stopped raining and the grass is turning brown. My next door neighbor uses someone who comes every Monday, whether it needs mowed or not.

We pay $35 weekly including removal of bagged grass. Since Houston is a pretty warm area, we mow weekly from mid- to late-March well into October. This price includes edging sidewalks, driveway, decks, etc. It's a great price for the quality of work we get. We've used the same person and his crew for many years now. He keeps his mowers sharp so they cut, not chew, the grass. They take great pride in "their" yards and often fuss at me for not using more chemical weed control.
We mowed our own for many years and it's a good 2 hour+ job. Physically I still could, but don't want to. DH thinks he could too, but I think it's too risky for a 79-year old when our heat indices are often in the low 100's. And the annual maintenance of mower, edger, blower, etc. is pricey too. We do our own fertilization and chemical application.

Wow, I’m amazed at these prices. My yard guy charges $60 for my 1/4 acre lot.
At the new house we have 3/4 acre and he charges $130 for it! We just moved in a couple weeks ago and decided to use him for the rest of this season and have a riding mower by next season. We’ll still have him do the other yard though.
We have 2 walk behinds, my barely used one from my old house, and a self propelled that the seller here left behind. Neither one wants to run though lol.
Right now we are spending almost $400/month keeping the grass cut and edged at 2 houses. That kinda pains my soul.
I cut my grass myself for years (with the help of my son once he was old enough, and before he moved away). I’d be really sad if I had to go back to doing it myself on a regular basis. Regarding your situation, I’d happily pay someone $30 to cut my yard and not have to deal with it myself.

I thought about this thread earlier today. There was a guy mowing my next door neighbor’s yard and I went over and introduced myself and asked how much he’d charge for mine. He said he use to take care of this yard for the man that sold the house to us and he’d charge the same price he charged him..... $70! I called my BF immediately to ask what he thought.
Needless to say, we have a new yard guy. He’ll also cut back/clean up the mess that has grown up on one side of the house for $250. Just in time, since some of it is laying on the house and I saw a squirrel on the roof this morning.
