LOL...My mom had great potato salad when we we young. At every family gathering she was asked for the recipe but wouldn't give it out much to all my aunts consternation. Actually, we never really saw her make the salad. We figured she made it when we were at school. It was her secret. She took it to her grave.
As we got older, the big family gathering got smaller and smaller as aunts and uncles pass and cousins moved away. It wasn't until my mom passed away did my sisters and I discover a few clues while cleaning and tossing out things.
Like all moms, she "collected plastic food tubs for leftovers. Not a lot but a good supply. While tossing these containers out we came across some potato salad tubs from the local deli. We all looked at each other and instantly smiled and laughed. We then went to her old recipe box and found a note with just these words - "Potato salad - Vista Market".
This was her "secret recipe" potato salad.

This was her "secret recipe" potato salad. Why would you write that in a recipe box? Did she really go to the box looking for the recipe and see that it was purchased, like it was brand new information?

Potato salad must contain mustard, eggs and onions. Anything else just tastes bad. I must admit, those are the ingredients my mother in law uses, and she makes the best potato salad in the world 🙂 I use these ingredients in mine: Colman's powdered mustard, sauteed onions and the eggs. I cannot eat raw onion or garlic anymore, and the powdered mustard seems to blend in better with the other ingredients. I'll also toss in a bit of finely chopped celery and/or carrot for color. With the powdered mustard, you know the mustard flavor is there, but it doesn't overwhelm. I use a mix of red and Yukon Gold potatoes to make my mayo-based salad. I found the Duke's mayo was a little too sweet, so I use Hellman's. I do add a touch of sugar to the recipe, but it's for balance more than flavoring.

I wish I had a big bowl of my mom's potato salad right now. And some of her deviled eggs. I would also enjoy her meatloaf, spaghetti, lasagna, roast beef and potatoes, homemade chicken noodle soup along with so many other things. Esp her handmade cinnamon rolls. My mom was a great cook, and a baker among other things. When it came to sewing, if she had something to look at, either in real life or a picture, she could make it. She was an excellent artist and could craft, knit, crochet as well, or better than anyone I've ever known.
My dad could fix and build anything.
I miss them both terribly.
