I hate the 4th. She hasn’t eaten all day and hasn’t gone potty since this morning. She is shaking and quivering to beat 90, panting, etc. It doesn’t help that a quick storm rolled in. It is going to be a rough night and weekend for her.

Oh, the poor sweetie! I hope she gets some peace and quiet soon so she can feel safe again.

Has the vet ever suggested anti-anxiety pills? Or even one of those "stress" vests? Poor puppy!

I am going to see if there is a shot they can give her to calm her there on Saturday night, since it is inevitable fireworks are going to be going off all weekend.

Sorry about the dog.
We pet owners dread the eve of, the day of, and the day after the 4th of July. New Year's Eve nearing and after midnight is pretty bad here too.

Yeah......Harriet has been spending a lot of time on my lap since the fireworks started going off. While I was making dinner, she decided that TD was an acceptable substitute for me. At least the extreme trembling has stopped for now.
I don’t remember fireworks being an issue last year.....

Our last guy was traumatized by constant and unpredictable fireworks that went off year round, the first week of July was like a war zone. Definitely don’t miss that aspect of living where we did! He eventually just refused to go for walks after dark at all. PP didn’t want to walk much tonight but seemed mostly ok, a little curious. It’s been a bit loud since dark fell but the hotel soundproofing is pretty good.

He was still under the couch a few times last night, but not as much as last year. We have a big civil war reenactment coming up in a couple of weeks that is going to be pretty hard on him.

Lucy hid out under the couch so I turned off the loud fan. What's the point if she's not going to be in the same room.
The fireworks started about 8 PM and were going strong when I fell asleep.
I woke up to Lucy purring. Looked at the clock and it was 1:30 AM. Don't know when they actually stopped but that is when she decided it was safe. From the looks of the bedroom and hallway, she played with her toys before going to sleep.
Fireworks are legal through the 8th. I hope last night was the worst, but I expect fireworks at least tonight and Saturday.
Lucy is my first cat in over 40 years of being owned by cats who has been afraid of thunderstorms, lightning and fireworks. I did adopt her as an adult, so I don't know her history and if that might be the reason. I raised all of my other cats from kittenhood.

None of them so much as flicked a tail at the noise - and one of the neighbors were especially industrious, setting off fireworks well into the night.
It helps that cats are all narcissists. If the fire works aren't impeding the ability of the food to find it's way into the bowl on the floor, they don't matter.
I am curious about those swaddle vests they were hawking on TV for dogs, to help calm them down. Curious if anyone has used one and it worked?

There was only one time the cats were afraid of a storm. We had 5 at the time and all five were terrified. I definitely took notice of that and turned on the weather. A tornado had touched down about 2 miles away and ran about 4 mile path.

We dosed both dogs with CBD oil, put the Terrier in his Thundershirt, and then watched TV a little louder than usual. Fireworks were going off here until well after midnight. The combination of everything allows the Beagle to settle in her crate and the Terrier to react to the fireworks the same way he would the doorbell at worst, and at best, he is able to lie on the bed, pressed up against one of us.
He got some CBD oil in Wednesday night, because that's when the fireworks started here. I expect he'll get more tonight and tomorrow night.

There was only one time the cats were afraid of a storm. We had 5 at the time and all five were terrified. I definitely took notice of that and turned on the weather. A tornado had touched down about 2 miles away and ran about 4 mile path. Our cats (we had 2 at the time) did the same thing when the tornado took the roof off our house. The smart one hide in the hall closet and didn't come out for several hours after the tornado passed. The stupid one got on top of the kitchen cabinets - she was very lucky the tornado only took the second floor roof off, or she would have been sucked out (as would all the rest of us).
The smart one still gets scared of bad thunderstorms - she hides under the master bed frame, which is pretty massive and probably a good place to hide. I'd get under there too, if there was room. However, she can apparently tell the difference between thunderstorms and fire works, and the fireworks don't bother her. The stupid one forgot all about the tornado within a few months, bad thunderstorms don't scare her. Not much scares her except big dogs coming into the yard when she's on the screened porch - that makes her pop right through the cat door and hide.
Since then, if they are predicting tornados, I try to round up the cats and put them in a cat carrier so I can grab them if I have to run to the storm shelter under the house, but that makes them extremely unhappy, to be in their carrier in a storm.

I could not get my mutt to leave the house after 7 PM yesterday. He was over-affectionate (usually code for "I gotta go out") for hours. but every time that I put him on a leash and tried to take him outside, he balked at the door. He absolutely refused to go outside where the random boom-boom seemed to be coming from and was definitely louder.
I'm afraid to check the basement and quiet corners of my house. He's usually such a good dog but he really hates random booms.

What do you mean won't take the pills. I open BJ's mouth, push them way back on his tongue and hold his mouth closed. He takes them. He is a big dog 65 pounds. I had to give them to him before. Now he is deaf enough I don't think the sound bothers him as much. But we also let him in the basement so all was good.
But I feel for animals, hard on them.

I did not think of it until Monday, but I went on Amazon and ordered a Thundershirt. I have two dogs, one is fearless, and one is terrified by fireworks. The Thurdershirt was on my porch on Wednesday when I got home.
My in-laws dog sit for my dogs while we go to work. The live across from a park on Lake Michigan where they have a very nice fireworks display, so the whole family has a cookout at their house, and then sits in the front yard to watch the fireworks. Last year my dog hid in the bathroom, and anyone that went in the house to use the bathroom, had company in the bathroom with them.
So, yesterday morning, I decided to put the shirt on my scardy cat dog. It has Velcro closures, and he hates the sound of ripping Velcro. When I was fitting it on him he bit me very hard in my thumb. It bled pretty bad. Since it was hot yesterday, we took it off him until just before the fireworks started. I decided not to put it on to tight. He actually laid down at my feet for part of the fireworks, and for the end he sat calmly at my feet and actually watched the show. I felt him jump only once for a particularly loud boom.
Despite the fact that he bit me when I put it on him, I am very pleased with the results and will use it again. I just have to be fast when I put it on, and maybe have someone help me.

Who is in charge, you or the dog, Cheesy? You can roll it up in a piece of meat or cheese, and down the hatch it goes. Dogs are easy. Sushi the Destroyer won't take his pills, either. He has no choice with his chronic pancreatitis. I have to force them down his gullet, and that's no easy feat. It's like trying to handle an angry, buzzing chainsaw, all pointy bits and teeth.

I have never had to pill Lucy.
One of my cats would foam at the mouth when I tried to pill him. That's when I would stop.
The cat with a chronic illness and I seemed to come to an agreement. I think he finally figured out the pills did make him feel better. It took several years of me getting scratched up to come to that agreement.

The fireworks didn’t bother Sheldon last night either. The only way he reacted to it was because Harriet spent so much time in my lap, he didn’t want to be left out so he had to be up here too. A 37 lb dog and a 12 lb cat get heavy and hot.

I have friends who vouch for the Thunder Shirts. Last night was the first time in forever that our cat was worried about the fireworks, and the fireworks were a 1 on the 1 to 10 scale. Go figure.

Do Thunder Shirts work on cats? Ours last night were a 10. Some we right over the house and right outside our windows.

Has the vet ever suggested anti-anxiety pills? Or even one of those "stress" vests? Poor puppy! She won’t take them. how do you get her to take other meds? I have to disguise either heartworm or flea/tick meds for LD. as in, pulverize in a mini chopper with some deli meat, then pour into his dinner bowl with everything else.

She actually thinks her flea and heartworm are treats. She was on antibiotics a few months ago and wouldn’t take them. Picked the cheese right off. I went to the vet to let them give them to her.

My relatives with scare-dy dogs swear by the thundershirts. The dogs are still scared but they seem to be less stressed before/during and after storms if they had their Thunder shirts on. They also have started using CBD oil stuff too. A couple of the dogs are now elderly and seem to be more effected by storms and fireworks - so between the shirts and oil stuff they have a slightly easier time of it. The fireworks started here the last weekend of June - and peaked July 3rd and July 4th (It went non-stop from dusk July 3rd, and then I think it was quiet between 4:00am or so and 6:00a July 4th and then started up again with a crescendo lasting from 10pm July 4th until about 2:00am... it petered out by dawn - and then was strangely quiet until about noon on July 5th when it started again. It's been quiet today - but expect it to start up again once it's dark. The fireworks probably won't stop completely until after next weekend. The 4th of July starts the weekend before the 4th and ends about 10 days after the fourth. ::sigh:: My cats didn't seem to notice it all until the non-stop booming started late on July 3th. There were some really big explosions that rattled the house. ::shudder:: I feel sorry for anyone with PSTD (related to load noises/gun shots/bombs). My cats were very clingy and restless going from hiding spot to hiding spot. I don't get the appeal of nonstop BOOM!!! followed by RATA TAT TAT endlessly for hours and hours. The cats seem better today - back to sleeping in the open and hanging out in the windows.

We have Thundershirts for our dogs. It works great on the Beagle (who is fairly mellow to begin with), and helps the Terrier quite a bit, too. The only problem is, he now knows that he gets the Thundershirt when something scary is happening, so having it put on him increases his anxiety for a bit.
I know other people who use Thunder Capes for their dogs and seem to like them. The reason we went with Thundershirts when we first wanted to try them was the money back guarantee. These are compression garments and they don't work for all dogs. At the time we got our Thundershirts, you had a full month to return them (so that you had time to figure out if they worked or not), and you didn't even have to return them to the store you bought them at. You could return them to any store that carried Thundershirts and return, because the guarantee was a manufacturer guarantee, not a store one.
They do make Thundershirts for cats, but I've never owned a cat that would let me dress them in anything, let alone a compression garment.
bean29 - At least for the putting on of the Thundershirt, make sure you have all the velcro separated before you bring it over to the dog. That way getting it on shouldn't trigger. Getting it off will be more of an issue, but maybe have someone there with you holding a treat?

Incredibly stinky cheese always worked for me, the stinkier the better.

My very first cat was on meds when I was going home for Christmas one year. Because of that, I decided to board her so he would get the meds. The boarding facility was operated by the vet tech who took care of him at the vet's office.
His chart did have "CAREFUL" marked all over it. It ended up being a waste of money to board him because he wouldn't let them give him medications and the other cat was traumatized.
I don't think Lucy would let me put a vest on her. When she gets that afraid, I can't touch her.
Last night was bad again with the big boomers well in to the night.
Legally, tonight and tomorrow night are the end. Usually it isn't bad on work nights, so I've got my fingers crossed.

I’m fortunate that my dogs aren’t gun shy and really seem to ignore any extra noise (we shoot around them all the time). However, I did hear from one person who uses catnip for her dog and claims it calms him right down.
