My Canon sx700 is having the plastic lenses cover break. It's a good camera but if I have to get another I would like one with telephoto lenses where I can take awesome closeups plus long distance shots. Would like to keep the total package under $1000, way under if possible. But if I have to replace it I want something good.
Any suggestions? I'm not a camera buff so don't know. This one has been good has 30X I see them now with 50

Look on the net at all the reviews. Find what you think will do the job for you & then search the reviews...all the reviews you can find.

This guy does reviews of cameras and lenses. All the major brands.... I always check his reviews if I'm thinking of buying a lens. He's pretty objective. www.kenrockwell.com

I have a Tamron 16-300 as my "all in one" travel lens. Not cheap, but well worth it. I believe they have one with even greater range now. The only thing it doesn't do is zoom in really well for taking bird shots, but you usually use a big, dedicated, zoom lens for bird photos anyway.
For my camera, I have both a Nikon d3200 and d3300. They are not full-frame cameras, but have done what I want them to. I like that they are lightweight and take great photos.
With the combo d3300 and 16-300 lens, I was able to take great night shots with no blur (did not bring a regular tri-pod, just a DIY string tri-pod, or used my surroundings for steady shots (set it on my bag, or a bench, or braced myself against a light post, etc).
I can't say I have the best set up, but it works for me.
If you are familiar with Canon already, you may want to go that route. I was debating between a Canon Rebel (Ti4?) as the equivalent to my d3200, but the Nikon went on a big sale, and came in a beautiful red color, so it won out.
Look into second-hand for good deals. A lot of big camera buffs trade up equipment frequently. If you have a camera club in your area, they may be willing to help you out as well (without trying to make a sale).

No matter what kind you get, look into www.blackrapid.com/ for a better strap. Unfortunately, I think they discontinued the one I have, but I love it. It's so much better for someone with a large chest. The strap lays perfectly (cross body) and is very comfortable. The camera hangs to your side instead of in front of you. It screws into the bottom (where you would put a tri pod). I added a tie-line to the normal camera strap area for extra security, and also zip tied the clip closed (so no one could come up behind me, unclip my strap, and run off with the camera). I'll never go back to the old straps.

I wish I were more knowledgeable. This one takes great pictures. I don't know if I broke the cover or if little guy was poking on it. But its not a good design, it has sliding plastic pieces over the lenses and that's it. no cover. I always worried about it breaking.

Many times they have used cameras in the case for sale at a reasonable price, or might have spare parts in the backroom from old cameras. I needed a new lense cap for my old Yashica and I found one that way.

These are made over the lenses, they are a series of little sliding plastic pieces. It all folds back but since I didn't use a camera case they have likely caught on things. I've had it several years so surprised it lasted this long. It's a good camera and I'm still using it. I don't know if we have a camera shop around here any longer. I will check though as a new one is going to cost and I would rather not have that expense right now.

Might want to research other shops in large cities in your geographical area, and do it online. Might be surprised it is not hard to find it. I admit I do not quite understand your description of the piece. Is it actually attached "hard" to the lense area and not easily removable? Another possibility is a local pawnshop.

The pieces are fastened to the lenses and slide open and closed when its retracted or extended. Looks like 3 at the top that slide down and 3 at the bottom that are not working so half the lenses only is now protected. It's still useable though.
