I’m a guy. I’m married. My clothes fit in the 36 inches of closet space that I am allotted by SWMBO. And my dresser.
On the other hand, I do have a two car garage to use as my play room. Table saws, band saws, compound miter saws, rip saws, hot damn!

Yes, that is a big factor in why I can't chuck clothes. The days of biting the bullet and visiting the fancy-schmancy department store and finding what you needed at goodness-knows-what price are over. When I walk into the Macy's that was once a Hudson's and then a Marshall Fields, I am assaulted by junk. I can walk into there determined to find a 34Bish bra that fits and willing to spend up to $40 on it and the odds are pretty good that I will not find anything like what I am searching for. I will find myself surrounded by racks of cotton bras and 100% acrylic bralettes, but there isn't a basic pebble-stabilizer to be found. I agree- I don't shop for clothes in department stores anymore. It's all made in countries with deplorable working conditions, mostly flimsy materials, and "features" that allow them to use less cloth: no pockets, "cropped" pants (which make every woman alive look like she has a fat rear end), spaghetti straps. If I were to go looking for clothes to buy I'd head for the sale racks at Chico's, where some things are still made in the US and they know how to make flattering clothes for older women.

I'm sure if a clothing line of reasonably priced, well made clothes comes out we older women would buy them. But I don't know what the younger group buys, I guess the stuff you wear once and when the stabilizer washes out its a shapeless rag. They have women convinced, I guess, that hem lines hanging all over the place is cool. What ugly clothing they have out now.
It must be another way to have a class difference. For quite sometime us peons could look almost as good as the more wealthy. We sure don't anymore, look at the designer dudes, used to see lots of knockoffs that were decent quality. Not so much here.
Saves me a lot of money, not buying clothing. Sigh, I would like to at times though.

They have women convinced, I guess, that hem lines hanging all over the place is cool. What ugly clothing they have out now. I remember reading about this- it's a trend that is basically disposable clothing. It's made to last one season and be tossed- H&M, Old Navy, etc. are forerunners of this movement. With changes to fashion styles the push is to get people to buy these ultra trendy clothes at a low(ish) price so they won't feel guilty about throwing them away in a few months when they wear out or aren't trendy anymore. So wasteful- both financially speaking and from an environmental standpoint. I've found that anything you get a like Kohl's for example is the same way- hems stretch, collars get misshapen, colors fade. I hate it. I also am not a fan of having to go to malls- they are the worst, so many annoying people. I buy pretty much all of my clothes on line- but lately I've been getting them from thread up. It's an online consignment store. I can buy better quality clothing for less than buying the crappy clothing at the mall. My $39 Ralph Lauren wool pea coat has lasted me 3 winters so far and will last several more.

I'm not a clothes person. I mostly wear tie-dye t-shirts and jeans/shorts if I leave the homestead. I have 3 of each.
Otherwise I have a stained, torn, t-shirt and either shorts or leggings on. I do a lot of home projects and paint canvas nearly every day, so I like being comfortable and not caring if paint gets on my clothes.
When my house was previously in escrow, I was bound and determined to move with just my small Blazer and small truck-bed trailer. I got rid of everything that wouldn't fit into a small dresser.
Honestly, I haven't missed a thing and when I move in the spring I will purge about 2 of the 5 drawers. This time, I plan to take even less with me.

I like nice clothing. Want to look nice. Around the house I often wear sweats and tshirts or in the summer shorts. but when going even to the store I want to look well put together.
Today I feel drained of all energy, I went downstairs once and it was hard getting back upstairs. I am soooo tired.

In my prior life I worked in a Salvation Army thrift store and discovered I can get better quality clothes there than I can afford to buy retail. I love thrift stores.
Last fancy-schmanshy outfit I bought retail was from Dillard's for an extremely formal outing. The greatest compliment I received that night was a lady saying I looked super comfortable. Everything fit well and I felt good, and I have worn it several times since.
I have found some great things at thrift stores, and when I'm through with them I donate them back. About every 3-5 years I can have as much change as I want.
Undies and shoes I buy new. I gave up on heels many years ago.

I have too many clothes. The problem is with the kids gone and a large house I have plenty of room to store stuff. I don't buy that much, but have trouble getting rid of anything. I'm trying a strict rule of getting rid of 1-2 items for each new one, but I can't commit to that every time.

Too many and I only wear 20% of them regularly.
I need another purge.
But I cannot find anything new that I like. And I need to lose 10-15lbs
I have purged most of my wardrobe to white, tan, black, gray and denim. I can't wear prints. But it is all I see this year. And there are so few retail stores to shop at

I have one outfit to wear to 50th anniversary parties, graduations and funerals, a couple spare black skirts and a spare blouse. A few going to the store or visiting people outfits and lots of home lounging outfits. Also some swimsuits and fishing outfits, coats, boots. I tossed all work clothing when I retired, I tossed all clothing that did fit. My excess clothing for lounging and fishing I keep at my ISOs house. So I need excess sleep pants, sweat shirts, tee shirts, night gowns so I take some to his house and bring home laundry and want enough left at his house to have enough if I don't bring some, bathrobes both houses.
My house has a master closet less than half full, empty closets in two other bedrooms and empty coat closet, no need to fill them.

I have been purging clothes pretty seriously lately. I have a ridiculous number of jeans and bras.
Jeans -- have trouble finding comfortable ones that fit -- hate hate hate all the mid and low rise that have been popular for so long. I think this issue will be fixed! Soooo happy high waist can be found again. Just got some high waist skinny jeans from Loft. When I zipped them up, I swear that the angels started singing! I've worn them enough that I am now stalking the Loft website for additional colors/lengths.
Bras -- monthly I go through 3 sizes. (sigh) I do think I am getting old enough that this issue should be resolving soon ....

My mom is one of those people who wore boots once in the last 5 years and yet has 20 pair in her closet... My goal for a while has been an empty closet. lol

I have a pile on my loveseat ready to go off to Salvation Army! Then I'll start another pile... (it starts downstairs, where my room is, then gets moved to the loveseat to get sorted, documented, and bagged when the pile gets big enough).
I only have one or two tanktops, so don't really have "exclusively summer" clothes. It's the bulky winter clothes that get in the way (and are expensive/impossible to get new ones that are as good as quality without spending a fortune, which makes them so much harder to part with).
I do think I need to start using a closet for some of it though, that would give me the room I need in the dressers (but I still need to get rid of a lot).
I also have some shirts and jeans that I likely won't wear again, but want to use in a quilt. I should start cutting those and getting rid of the scraps so that the items take up less room.
I also have started separating a few items to go to my "travel bin" (a large tote that holds all the stuff I need just for travel-- packing cubes, plug adapters, scarves, etc). These are nice shirts that I never wear at home, but are great for travel because they wear well and dry quickly (lightweight, thin t-shirts, cashmere sweaters, stuff for layering, etc).

But I cannot find anything new that I like. And I need to lose 10-15lbs This is one of the main issues I have. I need to lose weight, and I know that (and have actually been motivated to start making that happen). At my current size, it's like all the local retailers (well, the two we are down to now) think that "oh, if you are this size, you must like huge floral prints and lots and lots of fake jewels! You must also be short!" No. I want a solid long sleeve t-shirt in a normal color that is long enough not to show skin when I lift up my arms. I pretty much buy men's shirts if I have to buy something. I miss having clothes that fit well and don't look like something my gramma wore. On the rare occasion I find something I really like, it's only available online, it's expensive (I don't want to spend a lot of money on clothes), and it's a crapshoot on whether or not it will actually fit me.

You would love hubs shops, he has 8 bays worth of garages, they are all full. Then a lawn shed and my garage at the house that is a double but would be tight with a side room. He didn't want to let loose of the money, I made him build what he wanted and needed before retiring. Now he was gifted a bunch of truss rafters for helping out around the town. He is going to put a cover from one garage to the other for a work area out of the sun. 72 and still building one, LOL!

My current shop is 400' smaller than my house. It used to contain every woodworking tool known to man. Now it still has the band saw no one wants and my chop saw. Love that thing, it's moving with me. My goal for my next house is actually more garage/shop space than home space.

DH#1 built a 24x40 garage for our cars and his toys. I told him if the cars had to park outside, some toys had to go. He made sure all toys were back in their proper holes each evening so the cars were inside each night.
Easy, peasy

As someone who doesn't like clutter, I have too much. As someone who likes cute clothes, I don't have enough. As someone who has a rule that she cannot wear the same outfit more than once per month, I barely have enough. As someone who lives in an area of three seasons, I have more than enough for that. However, whenever we go somewhere in the summer that is warm enough for shorts, I don't have enough shorts. I have 24 pairs of shoes. That's probably too much. Except I need more sneakers.

This thread made me really look at how many clothes I have, and holy cow! I think I have a problem.
I have two dressers with socks, bras/panties, tank tops, shorts, jeans, and swimsuits. A walk in closet with three rods full - mostly work clothes. Two full shoe racks with more shoes on the floor that don't fit on the racks. Three shelves of sweaters. A basket of workout clothes.
But I purge my clothes regularly, and wear almost everything I have.

I filled up two garbage bags with mostly clothes today, and will drop it off at SA tomorrow. There was some other stuff in there as well (flannel sheets for a twin bed-- we no longer have a twin bed in the house).
Slowly starting to pair down some!

I've never had much of a sense of style which makes it easier to keep a smaller closet. When I got a job hostessing in highschool and had to dress nice I went out and bought the most minimal capsule wardrobe I could. Probably 7 pieces total. Right when I started to worry that I always wore the same clothes/outfits, a well put together coworker complimented my wardrobe and that I never wore the same thing. I was floored, and probably took the minimalism a little too extreme for a while. But decided most people aren't paying enough attention to me to notice how frequently I cycle through my simple garments.

How much clothing do you have? Is it too much, not enough, or just right? Do you enjoy shopping for clothing? Do you have a body type that makes it easy to find things in the store/online? Do you live with magic fairies who replace all the worn clothes with new clothes for you? (I could seriously use one of those magic fairies!!)
In a little over a year, I went from years of having clothing, but "not having anything to wear", to having something appropriate to wear for pretty much anywhere I go. It's all unorganized at the moment (as is my brain and my whole life right now), so I'm really not sure whether it's too much or just right at this point. I will admit that my bedroom closet is stuffed and the closet I use in another room to store off season and special occasion clothing is almost full. That includes some items I can no longer wear since my body has been slowly changing (and growing!) over the last few years. I need to purge.
I HATE shopping for clothes. I built my wardrobe using StitchFix for the past year. It's not the least expensive route, but it is almost like a magic fairy. Clothes just show up on my doorstep every so often, and I either keep and pay for them or send them back. I'd been needing to do something about my closet for literally years, but never got it together because I needed so much and I really do dislike shopping. So the service works for me.
Work clothing is easy, I made my own "uniform". I have t-shirts with my employer's logo, 5 hoodies for winter, and 5 pair of Old Navy jeans. I don't wear these items and certain shoes anywhere else. I've had that system for years, getting dressed for work requires no thought. It was only when I'd be going somewhere else that my clothing issues would have me wringing my hands.

Today I bagged up another two bags of clothes (for donation), in a search for my "reasonable" number.
I'm getting closer to what I want. Just moving my heavier long sleeve t-shirts/sweaters/hoodies from the dresser into a suitcase cleared up so much room for all my short sleeve t-shirts! So, why did I not do this before?!
I now have a couple under-the-bed cloth totes for clothes. I figure under-the-bed is "free storage" and perfectly reasonable.
I think I have my goal more narrowed down. Keep in-season clothes in the dresser, along with a few "what will Oregon weather bring us today?" clothes for those off days. The rest of the true out-of-season clothes have to fit in a small closet, or under the bed. (I think... we'll see after I get through every item of clothing in the house, but I'm very hopeful.)
I'm working on balancing this with "I never want to buy clothes again, I just want to keep all my too many clothes that I really like, even if there is some overflow!" For now, if I really like it, I'm going to keep it, almost no matter what shape it is in. If I don't really like it, and don't need it to fulfill a reasonable purpose (a non-nerdy, solid tee that looks nice for when I want to play grown up), then I'll donate it. Today I had two sweatpants. One pair was practically brand new, it had great pockets, but the fit was just "weird"-- the waist was too high and the fabric texture felt "off" (sometimes I have issues with the way things feel-- microfiber towels make me cringe). Second pair was faded, had a hole in the butt seam, one side of each pocket had completely become detached from the pants, so that left unusable pockets and big holes. But, the fabric was so soft! And I loved the fit! And I just feel so cozy in them! I donated the "nice" pair, and will mend the holey ones.
So, if there are a few stains or holes, but I love them otherwise because of fit and feel, then I'll wear them in the house and not worry if they get a random stain, or I snag one on a splinter while handling logs or boards. I'm just going to keep fewer of them in my drawer. I'll keep the rest in a tote under the bed, and when I wear some out, I'll just go "shopping" from my own stock! Nicer clothes will move into the under-bed stock as they become not fit for public, but still comfy and cozy.
I think for now, as long as they take up "reasonable" storage space, I won't have too many anymore. What I don't want is piles and piles of clothing left on top of the dryer, in a basket, on the utility room counter, in the spare room where the spiders live, etc. I think it's a good balance between hoarder and being forced to shop for new clothes more often than I want.
Of course, I did just buy a new hoodie with an alien "bursting through the chest", but it's so soft and comfy and nerdy and from one of my favorite nerd websites that was closing down. I'm only sad that it didn't get here earlier this week when I had to go to work in chilly weather! I think I'm stocked now though.
I did throw away some stuff today too though. Lounge pants beyond mending, a thin blanket with holes, a ball cap, etc. I'm not beyond hope!

I was floored, and probably took the minimalism a little too extreme for a while. But decided most people aren't paying enough attention to me to notice how frequently I cycle through my simple garments. It's a rule in my head. I don't know specifically where it came from. If I try to explain it, I do realize that it doesn't have logic behind it. There's the theory that (I realize that this is not reality.) wearing the same clothes over and over again indicates poverty. If I only have five work outfits and rotate them through week after week, then someone will judge me for that. I don't ever wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row; I never wear the same pair of work shoes within one week. I don't want to give anyone a reason to pay attention to me, so if someone were to notice that I was consistently wearing the same outfits over and over and over, I would feel harshly judged. My mother is hardly judemental, and my father literally had plaque that was engraved with "Anything less than perfection is failure." I had to make sure I wasn't failing. I have to make sure that I'm good enough.
I actually have work outfits down to a bit of a science though in the sense of not repeating but not having to keep track to stingily:
Monday: dress/cardigan Tuesday: slacks/work polo Wednesday: skirt/cardigan Thursday: skirt/blouse not a cardigan Friday: nice jeans/blazer or cardigan
