Good! Maybe the US taxpayer can quit handing them money. Government payments to farmers are forecast to hit their highest level in more than a decade because of the trade assistance being provided to producers this year, and the total could go even higher if Congress, as expected, authorizes a new round of disaster aid. The Trump administration's temporary Market Facilitation Program, launched last fall to compensate farmers for lost exports of soybeans and other crops due to retaliatory tariffs, will pay out $9.8 billion in fiscal 2019, according to the Congressional Budget Office's latest projection of farm program costs. www.agri-pulse.com/articles/11843-farm-subsidies-to-leap-on-98-billion-in-trade-aid

If you remember Mexico threatened to hike tariffs on farmer imports from the states. They were going to tax pork coming into the country among other food stuffs, so there is legitimacy to Trump's claims.

If you remember Mexico threatened to hike tariffs on farmer imports from the states. They were going to tax pork coming into the country among other food stuffs, so there is legitimacy to Trump's claims. Proof? U.S. pork farmers could lose at least $360 million annually, after Mexico said it would slap a massive tariff on pork imports to retaliate against President Donald Trump's aluminum and steel import levies, according to an estimate by the Iowa Farm Bureau.
Mexico, the second-largest market for U.S. pork exports, said Wednesday it would impose a 10 percent tariff on all U.S. pork products, with the tariff rising to 20 percent by July 5, a spokesperson for the Mexican Ministry of Economy confirmed to NBC News. Mexico cited the president's actions in the declaration of its tariffs and said in an earlier press release that they "will be in force for as long as the U.S. government maintains the imposed tariffs" but that the country is open to "constructive dialogue" and "rejection of unilateral protectionist measures." From a YEAR ago in retaliation for tariffs the administration had enacted.

Yes, pork products...but VB said "along with other food stuffs"...what other food stuffs?
And it was still in retaliation to what DT had done....not anything else. So DT isn't doing anyone any favors, he is just hurting more & more US citizens....at some point most will wake up?

Seems unenforceable, to me.
Mexico is already the #1 market for US crops. So they're already buying 'large quantities.' How do you determine if they're buying 'large quantities' more than they're already buying?
You can't- but wait a few months and Trump will tweet the amount of food being sent over the border with Mexico as something he personally arranged, even if the total amount being sold is exactly the same (or even less than) what went over the border a year ago.
Then he'll go on a tweet rant about how, if Obama had done all the magnificent things he's done, the government would have declared a national day of celebration.

If you're going to mention it in passing, show the link! The baby in the White House is pouting yet again. Someone please stick a pacifier if this baby's mouth. Trump claims 'a National Holiday would be immediately declared' if Obama made the deals he has

If u watched Zakaria's show this Sunday Morning...u wouldn't be claiming any legitimacy to the Donalds claim...then again, knowing your feelings, I am sure u would have ignored all the points Fareed brought out... The new President of Mexico...has been very diplomatic in his dealings with Donald...treats him as he is, the elephant in a china shop...and even mentions that the last ting he wanted to do was put tariffs on any imports from the States... It seems what has been proposed and agreed to was already in the works months ago and Mexico is in a running war with the drug criminals, police and soldiers losing lives in the battle...so to take 6000 national guardsman to the southern border of Mexico means taking them away from the drug war.

Actually, maybe you can. Almost all of the produce comes by truck, some by train. And it all goes thru Customs.

I don't doubt that you can measure the quantity shipped.
I doubt you can determine WHY they were shipped. Was it because the Mexicans are afraid of Trump and forced their major grocery stores to purchase more produce from the US, even though it's more expensive than what they could buy in Mexico?
Or is it because Mexico had a tomato bug that destroyed their tomato crop forcing them to buy more tomatoes from the US than they normally would?
Or will it be - and my money is on this scenario - Mexico bought 5 million dollars worth of tomatoes in July 2018, and will buy 5 million dollars worth of tomatoes in July 2019, and Trump will crow about how he, and he alone, made the American farmers 5 million dollars in tomato sales in July 2019 - and the talking heads on Fox News will all be in a tizzy because Trump made such a fabulous deal for the American tomato farmers?

Pence made the mistake of parroting back Trump's bullshit. "Under this agreement Florida farmers are going to win like never before" is 100% Trump generated horseshit.
Pence ought to know better by now.

Hmmm. linkReturning to the topic of the thread, there is no evidence that the all capital letter tweet from the President has any factual basis.

They threatened retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump's rash and unwise policies. How do you read that as providing legitimacy to Trump's claims?

His eminence has also threatened again to put a tariff on all Mexican goods entering the country!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that is the big headline, and the small print is- if they don't comply with what they said they would do. he'll keep doing it, because he thinks it is a good tactic.

I did find this link but does not name items, just that Mexico would hit agriculture to hurt Trump with his voter base, etc. www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trade-mexico-tariffs/possible-mexican-retaliatory-tariff-list-excludes-u-s-corn-sources-idUSKCN1T627EThere were interviews last week with Mexican offixcials publicly stating they would hit agricultural items if tariffs were kept in place, but alas, I cannot find them today.

It is still irrelevant. Mexico would not be talking about tariffs at all were it not for Trump imposing tariffs on them. The key word is retaliatory. It is still a Trump-generated "crisis" and it is Trump's actions that damaged our farmers' ability to sell their crops.

What Tallguy says is the problem....it's a DT generated crisis and then he wants to "fix" it & take credit for fixing the mess he made in the first place.
If ya'al can't see that....want to borrow my glasses?

This pres has to be the most worthless excuse for a man and leader of this country we have ever had. Will our democracy ever survive this? If he is out in 2020 we might be able to rebuild this country. If not we are done for. Yes, I think it is that serious, in my 73 years I have never seen such as this.
I thought we had protections in our constitution to stop such as this. I did not realize we would have someone like mcconnell and trump in office and the people they have put in place could destroy us. Well now we see this. Will we be able to vote him out? But since nothing has been done to correct the possibility of more election interference, and nothing has been done to stop voter suspression, and voter rolls being decimated, its not looking good.
Can those of you here honestly say you are not afraid of what will become of our country? Is this to be the end of our wonderful experiment in democracy and we are all letting it happen. I am sickened, totally sickened and no someone like me has no way to effect anything, I'm a peon among many watching everything be dismantled. And can only watch with a feeling of hopelessness. I am starting to understand how people in 3rd world countries are starting to feel when they see their countries being ruined.

Fact is I have been asking myself..is it the Donald or his supporters, his supposedly base...The Donald , for the most part is who he has always said he is...it's his supporters, his so called base who keep him in power and back him...blame, in my opinion, rests with them.
