To answer your question, ask around. Ask friends or colleagues who they use. If you know any small business owners, ask them. In my area there are some “Who to Use” or “Who NOT to Use” Facebook groups. I cringe a bit about those groups though as I’ve seen some of the work product put out by some of the popular preparers and it is substandard...and now a few years after they started their business it is starting to come out how bad they are and they are getting fewer glowing reviews. Honestly, this type of engagement is rarely something my firm is interested in. If you’re having us prepare your current year return we will also look over the prior year returns to see if something jumps out. But people walking in off the street for this type of situation rarely want to pay our fees or they would have sought out a qualified preparer to start with. If your return is fine then you’ll probably keep doing the return on your own, which means no ongoing business for us. And if your return is a mess, depending on how you present yourself and if we think there’s hope of getting you on the right track, we may not be interested in taking the mess on. then I guess it's a good thing I'm making an appointment.

I really have no idea what your purpose is with this thread? You already knew better than anyone who had a response

I really have no idea what your purpose is with this thread? You already knew better than anyone who had a response Almost no one answered my question so I just started googling and then found ratings and used yelp? I've got a reply to my first person I emailed, and let me tell you after this thread what a pleasant surprise! He didn't tell me to pound sand at all. Didn't tell me that after using turbo tax I was unworthy of any professional assistance. Gave me an hourly rate, estimated time to complete, and next steps if terms were acceptable. Frankly pretty amazing he can stay in business with those kinds of practices and taking in turbo tax riffraff like myself.

Who the fuck said you were unworthy of professional assistance?
Several people said the way they find an accountant is asking friends and colleges... etc...
The issue was finding someone GOOD to look over your taxes... people expressed possible problematic issues and gave their personal experience.
You are the one who has been dripping attitude.

I thought the replies to Rukh's post were dripping with attitude - but I am in a similar boat. I have done my taxes on my own for years...I have a BS in accounting, work as an accountant, and am able to pick the brains of CPA's if something comes up. Still it has been years since I have had a CPA look at my taxes. I hope to do that sometime this summer, but also have to find someone I can trust. I don't want my personal business to feed back to my work, so I don't want to use the CPA firm I deal with for work.

Plenty of people answered the questions, asked more, shared experiences and concerns. Rukh is the one using inflamed hyperbole.

I also thought a number of the responses were full of attitude. Seriously, go back and read them.
There was this idea that no "good" CPA would be willing to do any work for a person who was not going to promise to come to them for taxes for the rest of their lives. Because CPAs never do one shot work, apparently, only long term contracts. And that if you were a person who had done your own taxes before, and then were concerned about them, you are some sort of buffoon unworthy of their professional time.
Rukh O'Rorke never said she was looking for someone to do this for free, or even discounted. There just seemed to be an assumption from people who, based on their responses, work at CPA firms, that this work was beneath them/not worth their time, or that Rukh somehow wasn't willing to pay. It was a ridiculous set of assumptions, given that all she was asking for was a way to find solid recommendations.
And yes, many people said ask family, friends, or colleagues, but some of us don't have family or friends who need/use a CPA. (Some of us are the person who does taxes for our family.) And not all of us are comfortable asking people around work "who does your taxes?".
I figures she was asking if any of us (many of whom appear to be CPA professionals) knew of some good ways to find recommendations, kind of like a professional website. That answer wasn't forthcoming, so she used Yelp - which is a great resource, and then shared that with the rest of us, in case we ended up in the same situation. Thank you!
But yeah, CPAs here, apparently ya'll need to get over yourselves.

oped - Go re-read readergirl's and msventoux's replies to Rukh O'Rorke. They basically said that their firms would in no way want this work without a guarantee of ongoing work. That seems odd to me,as I know plenty of CPAs who do one shot work. And plenty of people who try one CPA one year, don't like them, and find another one the next year.
And then there was your own assumption that rukh was looking for a discounted service, that she wanted something less than full service. You mentioned what you pay to get your taxes done. At no point did she respond "oh no, I'm not paying that much." She wasn't asking for a free or discounted service, yet many assumed she was.
And as I said earlier, sometimes the answer of "ask family and friends" just doesn't work.

She said minimal. And she didn’t once attempt to correct a mistaken impression just aggressively slam anyone with an opinion or experience.
Maybe you should re-read?
I think I’m done though. Really could not care less at this point.

Rukh asked how to go about finding someone. She said she was not happy with the last person she used, and has been using Turbo Tax.
Personally, given her education and responsibility and current employment, I am willing to bet that if she finds someone and they tell her everything looks good, she will probably have them do her taxes going forward. She is doing much better financially now that she is done with her PHD.

Years ago when we did use a CPA, I did my return in Turbo Tax and then tried to take her my file box with all my backup and my tax return, she said she did not need all that, she just wanted my tax return, And Schedules to review. She did indicate she charged me less b/c I was not handing her a disorganized jumble of receipts to categorize. We found her via referral from others in DH’s line of work. I think she is retired now.
Rukh will just have to see what kind of response she gets.

It's straight forward but also flexible if things are more complicated once investigated.
