American grave in the Netherlands for 74 years...not unusual...These graves are tendered for the most part as a memorial and a thank you for their sacrifices...She is now 89 years young and recently made contact with the decendents back in the States... ------------------------------------ www.yahoo.com/news/she-apos-watched-over-wwii-105800375.html

Nice article.
I have known about the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, the Netherlands for some time and how the villagers 'adopted' one or more of the Americans buried there. A kind act of the villagers to make sure the dead who freed them are not forgotten.

I had a hard time keeping my eyeballs from leaking when I read this one. The dedication and respect for someone she never met is amazing. I wish more people cared about others like she does.

Every May 5th (doden herdenkingsday - day to remember the war dead) my father would load all of us into the car and we would head to Margraten. He wanted us to know that there were people who had given up their lives for our freedom and who were not Dutch. And just learning it from history books was not good enough...
