This is a industry that employees the non tech types...rural American workers...good paying jobs...$15.00 to $25.oo per hour...identical product to that of Canada but because of tariffs of 25% by China..thats $2.00 per lb....Maine product not competitive...Industry afraid they won't get that business back... In this State I doubt much new large businesses moving there to take up the slack...just saying. ================================== "In June, The trump administration announced a 25 percent tariff on Chinese goods. Beijing responded with its own 25 percent tariff on a list of goods that includes live lobster. At the same time, China has lowered its tariff on Canadian lobster imports to 7 percent, making them more attractive to Chinese buyers. Stephanie Nadeau distributes the lobster caught by fishermen like Train. She said Chinese buyers used to account for 35 percent of her sales. But since the tariffs have came into effect, that market has virtually dried up. "There are no lobsters going to mainland China," Nadeau said, adding, "They've stopped." ================================ www.cbsnews.com/news/lobster-industry-hit-by-tariffs-us-china-trade-war/

Maine is a small state. I went to high school with Stephanie's brother. My wife works for another lobster dealer in the same community. The tariffs have killed Maine lobster exports to China. Killed them. All gone to Canada now. Unfortunately Steph's company was heavily involved in exporting, and they have taken it hard. Luckily the company my wife works for (which is also more diversified) deals only with the domestic market, and they have had no impact. But yeah, the China market is dead, at least for now. It may not matter for much longer anyway. The Gulf of Maine has warmed over 2 degrees in the last 30 years. So far, ironically, that has been good for lobster. But as it keeps warming it will bring the shell wasting disease that has already about killed the fishery to our south, and it will likely do the same to ours. We have already lost our Maine Shrimp. (properly called Northern Shrimp) those little guys have all migrated north to colder Canadian waters. While no where as major a industry...I know the warming of the waters has killed the lobster industry...also other shell fish industries too in the South off of Massachusetts and in Long Island Sound...off of Connecticut...also the oyster beds too...but according to the Donald, no such thing as "Global Warming" just more fake news... As this industry and others in the rest of the country...thinking dairy, poultry as well as the Soy Beans...are effected big time by the trade wars with China...will those actually affected continue to support the Donald and his party...I am sure who ever runs against him will bring the fact of the hurting in those industries up to those affected...and it won't be fake news...Now w3hether those actually affected continue support of the man and party...we'll have to see though I know if it was me..... ==================================

Does this mean local lobster prices will be depressed when I come visit in July? Hey, cool! Hope you have a great visit. I don't think lobster prices will suffer in July because of it- there is almost limitless local demand at that point. However- there is also a lot of supply, and the "shedders" are coming in hard at that point, so the pricing should be pretty good at that time anyway. You can find it locally at various price points, from quite reasonable at modest lobster shacks, to still pricey at more upscale places. Still, the best deal in the states! Most suppliers are not destitute over the China thing. Many were not even shipping to that market, and many of those who were are also diversified with the customer base they have. The company in the article quoted bet heavily on the China market though, unfortunately. It was working very well for them- demand over there was huge and growing- but they had too many eggs in one basket. Where are you going in Maine? We will be in Dexter during the last week of July

If you find yourself in Rhode Island, go to the Nordic Lodge. Nordic Lodge has an all you can eat seafood buffet, including unlimited lobster. I had dined on the buffet there back in the mid-'80s. Price for adults for the buffet back then was $27. Today, the price for adults is only $103. Open only on weekends. The Nordic Lodge 178 E Pasquiset Trail, Charlestown, RI 02813 The Nordic Lodge

Come to Montreal. You can buy a whole lobster, live or cooked, for about $7.00 C. That's about $5.20 American. I had lobster for supper.

While his girlfriend was preparing dinner, the co-worker and I went out his boat to check his lobster traps. Any lobsters inside them would be our appetizers. Plenty of legal size lobsters in the traps (and other strange ocean wildlife). We took all the lobster back to his home and cooked them. We had so much lobster with drawn butter we barely ate the turkey and all the trimmings. There was quite a lot of take home turkey and trimmings leftovers but no leftover lobster.

Supposedly the warming of the sound has really cut into lobsters being found in Long Island sound...basically killed what ever local industry that was there...Had a cousin in Madison, believe next to Clinton who had permit for some lobster traps...did the same thing as your friend...

LOL! That was at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth. A beautiful spot. It was also a California tourist. I don't think her name was tractor. At the retail price of...that was a cold lobster roll...I prefer the hot picked lobster roll...Connecticut...I would have been pissed and hand fighting the gull...."try to take my lobster will ya...not on my life..take this u %$^#$ ….."

Well, that's what you get when you insist on taking pictures of your food with your phone.
At least he didn't fall off the boat and get eaten by a shark while doing a selfie.

So, is it global warming or is it China tariff retribution?
