I have a bunch of gold jewelry that I don't wear. I've decided to sell it, and split money with my daughter. Any advice? I've never done this before. A lot of it is gold rings with stones; small diamonds/coctail type rings. I know there are some jewelry stores that buy. I also have two small bars that are 1 troy ounce of silver each. Same type store will buy? Do they pay by check? This all started by me cleaning out my closet! I plan to retire and move in 3.5 yrs, and don't want to haul a bunch of crap with me. Thanks!

A few years ago I sold some gold jewelry (some with stones) to a local jeweler. He paid by check. He makes custom jewelry, so he was going to use the components.

Should I assume with stones will be more than gold weight price?

Should I assume with stones will be more than gold weight price? It's going to depend on the type, size, cut, clarity, etc., of the stones. The stones in the jewelry I sold were sapphires and some small diamonds, so each type of stone had its own criteria. If you have stones that you think are especially valuable, it might be worth it to have the jewelry appraised or look into selling it at a jewelry auction. Otherwise, it never hurts to get offers from more than one buyer.

Should I assume with stones will be more than gold weight price? Not usually. Only if they are much nicer than average stones.

Coin stores also buy silver bars. I have jewelry since Crabby died. I have some silver bars too. I have been slowly selling them off. The coin stores will generally pay you spot prices.

When I needed the cash, I sold all of my gold jewelry items to a local jeweler.
The "we buy gold" folks won't pay you market price, but jewelers will. They melt it down and cast their own pieces and have the ability to test your items for their purity.

I am not a jewelry expert. I don't even wear any besides my wedding band. But I do watch antiques roadshow.
If there is any possibility that some of the jewelry is old or expensive, find an appraiser to look at it. It could be old junk, but sometimes it's not. Don't want to sell something for the gold value when the actual value of the piece is much higher.
And it doesn't seem to always mean that the pretty jewelry is the expensive jewelry. I've seen some really ugly pieces that were actually rare and exotic art.
It's worse with the vases - it seems the more odd ball and weirdly colored they are, the more valuable they are. I think of all the junk I've tossed over the years sometimes and wonder if any of them were worth a lot - heck, DH sold a beat up 1960's metal toy (a tank) on ebay for $150, who would have guessed.

Several years ago I sold my old gold to a local jewelry store. They either paid me via a check or in cash, and at the time they were giving away a free coach purse as well. Most of mine were necklaces, earrings, a tennis bracelet and I forget what else.
It was a good experience.
