just how badly you will freak out when you get a text message from your spouse telling you they are under an active shooter lockdown. I received that text message today. There was an active shooter lockdown on the Kansas State University campus earlier. Shots fired near the K-State Foundation building. the lockdown was lifted about 45 minutes ago & hubby was able to call me.
fuck every god damn one of you gun nuts. fuck all of you who think this shit is a joke or no big deal.

OMG! I cannot imagine how horrible this must have been for all concerned. It was terrifying to be states away & desperately searching for information about it. Hubby is a very calm, even keeled person, so he sounded fine when he called me. But I can't imagine what it was like to be under lock down wondering what is going on. He was texting me to find out what was going on & I couldn't find anything other than the lock down alerts going out.
It's the first time I really freaked out since he's been gone. He'll be home later this month & it can't come soon enough now.

Just yesterday while kiddo & I were cleaning out the garage, he was telling me about the active shooter drills at his work. That freaked me out a little bit, mostly because he's my kiddo & just the idea of him being near something like that scares the hell outta me. Now this today with hubby. I can't see hubby to give him a hug, but right now, I want my kiddo home. No, I'm not calling him or texting him telling him to come home because mommy is freaking out. But mommy is freaking out & needs to hug him.

hugs. I went from school shootings are awful and I don't know how to deal with this to uncontrollable sobbing when I realized what school it was and that I know kids there. Knowing there was nothing I could do to help them or their parents, and sitting outside my kids school that was on lock down even knowing they were okay but that it was just luck and I could be in my friends position was horrifying. Brought it way too close to home.

It's not even news, anymore. School shootings used to be front page news for days and days. Now it's just another day in America.

Last I heard on the radio about 15 minutes ago, no one was hurt. yeah, that's what I was finally able to find. No injuries and the shots fired were near/in the Foundation building. I'm hoping to find out more when hubby calls again this afternoon.

MANHATTAN — The Kansas State University Police Department has concluded the primary investigation of shots that were fired around 11 a.m. at the KSU Foundation Building at Kimball and Denison. There were no injuries and there is no ongoing threat. According to K-State Police, the situation involved a dispute between individuals that appears to be unrelated to the Manhattan campus. The original contact between them occurred on the east side of Manhattan off campus and continued to the parking lot north of the KSU Foundation Building, where shots were fired. After the shooting, the victim, who is not a student, drove to Riley County Police Department to report the incident. No suspect has been arrested but K-State Police and Riley County Police Department are continuing the investigation.

The people who work in banking are trained to know there can be problems. I see from time to time where schools are training the students and faculty. It's not just gun nuts. I was in WY when a professor's son went into his class room with class in session with a cross bow. The student's fled when told but the professor died. There are stats out that show knives are worse than guns. I don't have access right now to the stats.

I'm so glad he wasn't hurt. Obviously, doing nothing isn't working, as there are so many copycat attacks. They were saying on the national news tonight that one of the school staff of the recent Colorado school shooting just happened to also be on staff at Columbine, back when they had their shooting. I can't even imagine.

I am not concerned at all,, You do realize your chances being shot by a cop is greater than being shot in one of the thing you are freaking over!

I am not concerned at all,, You do realize your chances being shot by a cop is greater than being shot in one of the thing you are freaking over! I bet getting in a car and driving to the store, a much greater risk for death and injury, doesn't create the same angst either. It really isn't a big deal, statistically. You put a seatbelt on when you get in the car, don't you ? What is it about people that deliberately refuse to protect themselves, by disarming themselves ? Then they worry about the criminal element/mental aberrations, that have always existed throughout man's history. It's not the 'bigness of the deal', it's about acceptable risk. You can increase of decrease your risk by your own choices. Those who "never realize", really should.

You, Sir are correct, You are in far greater danger of death or injury, from a car accident than are of ever getting shot! Question, Who here besides O.C has been shot?,, Who here have ever been in a car accident?

Let's increase the odd's,, who here have ever been involved in a mass shooting? I don't mean where a deranged family member or a disgruntled employee, takes out revenge!

Here's a good one.
The chances of being struck by lightning is 1 in a million.
The odds of being shot in a school shooting 1 in 7.8 million.
I don't wear a lightning rod that's grounded.
I probably am wasting my time wearing a gun on campus.
As an aside, it's one in 15 million to be killed at a school shooting.
You stand a chance of being struck by lightning 15 times, to equal the chance of being killed at a school shooting

It's not even news, anymore. School shootings used to be front page news for days and days. Now it's just another day in America. Not going to lie, when I saw the news about the STEM shooting, and that they were only reporting (at the time) possibly one dead and a few more injured, I kinda dismissed it.
Such a small scale shooting doesn't really even move the needle anymore. As a country we have managed to totally divorce ourselves from the individual human impact, and I think it's only going to get worse.
Sandy Hook was always the inflection point. When we failed to change course as a country there, our fate was pretty well set.

We do have some control over access to guns.

We do have some control over access to guns. this is precisely it. we, us humans, are responsible for school shootings. we are NOT responsible for lightning strikes.
but I am wondering about those numbers. why are you limiting it to "school shootings"? we are not kids here.
how about "mass killings"? 387 were killed in 2018.
you numbers are off with lightning strikes, too. it is true that over 400 were struck by lightning last year, but only 43 died.
so, actually, your numbers are completely upside down. you are 10x more likely to get killed in a mass shooting than killed by lightning.
you can put your rod away, @x

I can also take precautions to avoid being struck by lightning.
I can't really do much if some psycho decides to unload an AR15 at the movie theater other than duck and run. Yeah, I could arm myself, but one handgun against an AR 15, I'm going to lose. If everyone is armed, I'm probably going to get hit by friendly fire.
