Thanks for all the responses, many new ideas are popping up! We had a discussion last night, and I think he'll try to find a more permanent job that's ongoing through the school year and summer break on a few days per week. We'll see how it goes. Wineries, movie theaters, fast food, Walmart, the grocery store. Those are all options around here, I am sure he'll be able to find something.

Around here the grocery store hires a lot of teens to bag groceries. Another good summer job is lifeguard, but you have to pony up the $300-$400 to get certified first, so for a short term job that wouldn't be a good one. DS is hoping to get a job this summer bagging groceries. He can make like $350 a month working two weekends. The grocery store near us pays time and a half on Sunday. Plus small bonuses for "longevity" which starts at staying at the job for a month.

I originally told him he could do it starting this Fall after he gets through all the craziness of the next three months with band and camps and vacation, but maybe they'd be ok with him only working a couple shifts a week this Summer...I should have him ask. It would certainly be helpful if he could at least cover his own gas and spending money...setting aside some for school would be nice too, even if it was just a little.

Our local students often have spring and summer jobs bucking hay or other farm work. They also have year-round jobs at the local grocery stores. We also have a major, nationally recognized golf course in our area. Many students and teachers work there during the summer. The people who can afford to golf there ($250 green fees) tip really well.

Schildi, if your son is good at sports, he can coach at those 'camps'. My son plays HS tennis and during the summer holidays, he works as a coach at the city's tennis camps.

Our little rural suburban town hires high school kids to do everything from staff the town-run day camp to maintain town properties (schools, conservation trails, etc.). Maybe your town or city offers such jobs?
