Top Canadian officials are pushing the U.S. to take action to help calm the ongoing dispute with China, CTV News has learned. Diplomatic relations with China deteriorated following the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou last December. Two Canadian citizens have since been detained, and two more have been put on death row.www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-calls-on-u-s-to-take-action-in-china-dispute-source-1.4409265We made this arrest as a favour TO YOU. You asked us to do it, and like the good neighbours and allies we are, we complied. Now we're being punished. We'd like you to fix this, but the chances are slim to none, because you're in the midst of trade negotiations with China. Meanwhile, our pork and canola economies suffer, and our citizens are on death row.

I’m pretty sure that your Canadian officials were smart enough to anticipate that China’s response was a possibility. Or even a probability. Yet your officials agreed to the US request.
China did the same thing a few years ago with officials of an iron mining company that refused to sign long term contracts to sell iron ore to China at bargain basement prices. (China had purchased and stockpiled about a five year supply of iron ore to try to corner the market and strong arm mining companies into selling ore to China at well below market prices. And possibly weaken the big multinational mining companies so they could be purchased by Chinese interests at bankruptcy prices. The mining companies refused to play along with creating their own demise.)

We were lackeys when we rescued your hostages, at great and dangerous personal risk. We were lackeys when we were first on the scene after Katrina. We were lackeys when we welcomed tens of thousands of you after 9/11, sharing what little we had. We were lackeys when we got your Apollo 13 astronauts back down to earth. It's called "being a good friend". Something you know nothing about.

What have you done for us? Imposed punishing tariffs, called us a national security threat, insulted our Prime Minister, and got us into a war with China. Thanks ever so much.

If Canada creates foreign policy based on "being a good friend", that's kind of a massive indictment of the Canadian government. 2. It's not being a good friend, it's because of the massive economic impact the US has on Canada. As in, the US is 75% of the total Canadian export market, and over 20% of the overall Canadian GDP.
