do you try to fall back asleep before you get up and start the day? How does that differ when the time may be 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 in the am? This goes in YM because it is work-related. Research* shows higher-stress, higher-paying jobs correlate with more insomnia. *t = 5432.1, p < .001, N = 1

my alarm goes off at 330am right now. if I wake up later than 230, I just kind of stay up. any sleep after that point just puts me in a haze when the alarm finally does go off, and I'm screwed for the day. not sure if that's what you were looking for?

I usually get up around 7 am, but DH has his alarm set for 5:30 which wakes me up. If I can’t get back to sleep in an hour then I get up.

I can't imagine getting up one minute before I have to! Even if it's 10 minutes before my alarm is supposed to go off, I'm back asleep.
About the only exception to that is if I'm traveling. When I'm road tripping I like to start as early as possible, so if I happen to wake up before I planned I'll start my day early. Otherwise, no way.

I usually go back to sleep. If I've been awake for a long time and it's close to my alarm I will get up. I usually get up at 5:30am. A couple months ago I'd been awake since 4am. At 5am I gave up and just got ready and went to work.

The kids get up around 7am, if I'm up after 5am I give up on sleep and just stay in bed reading.

Wow- I had no idea so many people had to set their alarms so early. When I was working I set mine at 6:30 AM.
The first light seems to wake me up even if I wear eyeshades, so I'm awake earlier these days. I don't have a clock with a light-up display so I have to check my phone- that's deliberate. I get anxious if I wake up and I know it's 3 AM... and then 3:30 AM....and it makes it even harder to get back to sleep.
My limit is 5 AM. If I wake and check the time and it's 5 or later I try to get back to sleep but if I can't, oh, well. One of the may blessings of being retired is that I can always take a nap later if needed.

My alarm is set for 6:20AM, if I wake up and am up more than 10 minutes I read until I fall asleep again.
I live a 2 min drive from work and it has really improved my quality of life from when I had an hour drive, I can get an hour of workout time in and still be in to work by 8AM.

I am not a morning person - never was (goes back to first grade and getting up for school). The first alarm goes off at 6:15, the second at 6:25 and the third at 6:35. I'm usually out of bed between 6:35 and 6:45. I have to leave for work at 7:45. My cats are useless - they can't get me out of bed (well, the Little Girl did once - when she bit my nose at 11:00am because they were STARVING - literally - the bowls had probably been empty since 7:00am...) . I can turn off the alarm in my sleep. I'm usually "between" sleep and waking after the 6:25 alarm... I'm usually in a haze if I somehow manage to get out of bed on the first alarm and usually have a terrible morning (run late, forget to wear what I laid out the night before, forget some part of the morning routine, forget to take something I laid out and was suppose to take with me - even though it's right there by the door.) If I don't set the alarms - I will wake up "naturally" sometime after 9:00am DST - no matter how many of hours of sleep I've gotten. I have NEVER woken up at the time the alarm clock normally goes off - even if I've managed to get out of bed every day at 6:35 (7 days a week) for months - no alarm means I sleep till well after 9:00am DST. Every morning is a battle. I HATE mornings. (I can get up at 3:00am, and be pretty coherant... I sometimes take family to the airport that early. They pick me up, they drive to the airport (gives me time to "wake up") and then I drive home, put their car away, get back into bed, and fall asleep til my alarm rings... and the morning battle starts exactly like it does every morning - even though I may have been up for an hour and half in the middle of the "night". ) If I do wake up during the night - to use the bathroom - or because the cats have hissy yowl ly fight or if they knock something over that crashes (rarely) I fall back asleep quickly.

I almost never wake up at night and if I do, it's this awesome "I get to sleep another 3 hours" feeling for a few seconds after seeing the clock before falling right back to sleep. Not a restless need to read or do something else for awhile situation. I don't even get up at night to use the bathroom ever.

My alarm goes off at 5:30am. If I wake up after 5am, I won't try to go back to sleep, but I don't get up, either. If I am having insomnia, and my mind is hamster wheeling, if it's the middle of the night, I'll try the meditation techniques my therapist gave me, but if it's 4:30a or later, I'll just start consciously thinking through the issues and try to get some good reflection and planning done. But on a day I work, I never get up before the alarm goes off. This is because me getting up also starts the dogs' routine, and in their little heads, there is a very different routine if I get up to the alarm vs if I get up without an alarm. With the alarm they are like - breakfast, out, back to bed. Without the alarm, they are like - breakfast, out, walk-walk-walk-walk, what do you mean we aren't going for a walk? no I'm not going back to bed, I guess I'll bark.

My alarm goes off at 5:25, I listen to two songs, then get up by 5:30. Funny thing is when I’m anywhere but home, I never set an alarm and just wake up when I need to.

I'm a night owl and a bit of an insomniac. When I was working, I would sleep as long as possible. I don't think I ever got up before I absolutely had to, which was about 6:45 in order to get ready for work.
My husband's passing really screwed up my sleeping. I rarely get to sleep before 2am. I typically wake up about 9am, but I stay in bed, catching up on the news on my iPad until about 9:45. I have tried getting up earlier in order to shift going to bed earlier. It doesn't work for me.

I'm not a morning person at all. When I had a stint of unemployment as an adult I was able to sleep on my schedule. I went to sleep around 1-2 and was up by 9-10. I tend to get really productive around 8-9. It sucks now because I either lose sleep or I have to stop mid project.
Traffic and post work appointments dictate I keep my 7-4:30 hours.

Wow- I had no idea so many people had to set their alarms so early. if not for my particular commute dictating my work hours b/c I chose to drive in the country's worst rush hour traffic, I'd probably still be waking up around 530-6am. most of the time, that would be on my own w/o alarm. I think I've talked myself into trying out public transportation for a month (our commute perks are monthly, so...) and am looking forward to having a more "normal" day.

To be fair, I'm on a preventative migraine med that is also used as a treatment for insomnia. I recommend Amitriptyline for everyone. I never had trouble sleeping before I started taking, but on it I sleep like a rock...like dead to the world.

A former coworker and I used to have a competition of who could get out of bed later and still make it to work “on time.” My personal record was 8:15. We started at 8:30. Honor system, we weren’t sleeping in the same place. Now I drag myself out of bed at 6:30 and have serious trouble getting in on time. Personally it depends what time I wake up. I’ve been waking up around 3 and having trouble falling back to sleep until about 5:30, which means I’m a zombie when my alarm drags me out of a REM cycle. Depending on what’s on my to do list I might get out of bed and fold laundry or iron or similar until I feel sleepy again. I don’t want to do anything noisy or too interesting. Mostly I lay there and try to do relaxation exercises or just stare at the ceiling and think about ways to make DH’s snoring stop. Legal ways.

Between everything these days, I'm climbing into bed anywhere between midnight and 2am. Depending on the day, I have to be up between 4:30 and 6.
So. I guess. my answer would be I don't/can't go to sleep after I wake up..

I sleep 18 minutes past my wake up time (2 snoozes), usually 5 am on Tuesday/Thursday and 6:30 am Monday/Wednesday/Friday.
This post is timely because I think I am going to make my wake up 5 am everyday, and get some work done on my side-gig from 5 to 7:30 every day.

Half hour tops. If I can't sleep by then, I'll end up with a headache, so it is better for me to just get up. I don't use an alarm clock and I go to bed at 9. On a normal night I wake up naturally between 3 and 4 am. I have had nights where I am wide awake at 1 or 1:30. I don't bother trying to go back to sleep as I can tell it isn't going to happen.

If I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep within a half hour, I will get up and read for an hour and then go back to bed.
I normally get up at 6:30, and if I wake up after 5:30 I will just get up and not bother going back to sleep.

My DH's alarm goes off at 5:45, Mine is 6:10, and I usually snooze it to 6:20. At those times, I try to get every minute I can until 6:20, which cuts it to close for comfort for getting to work 5-10 minutes early, like I like to do in order to sneak in a breakfast sandwich. I have a terrible time trying to go to sleep early (sometimes with sleep in general). Normally go to bed by 11. Sometimes I try to inch it earlier so I can get enough sleep in, but always screw it up with a late night here or there. BAck when I didn't have to get p so early, I'd get up if it was within 30-45 minutes before my regular wakeup time, unless I felt bad for some reason (headache, extra tired, cold). The temperature thing is a big one. It makes me want to get up, or not depending. Cold winters are for hibernating, don't you know.

My wife's goes off at 4:45 and I never hear it. Sometimes my kids will hear her get up, come wake me up, and then climb into my bed. I can't think of a time when I've woken up sooner than my alarm, which is 6:10. Even when it goes off at 6:10, I lie in bed until at least 6:20 before getting out.

My alarm didn't go off today, but fortunately the cat got hungry and woke me up.
