Our hourly couldn't leave work early as work was always there for them, but we salaried employees at headquarters were always allowed to leave several hours early on Good Friday. Same with the days before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years.
When I was an hourly employee in the 70s and 80s, I always took a floating holiday on Good Friday because the job I had at the time was always slow that day. Bored to death when there was little activity.

Hey, our boss (the superintendent) even let us leave 45 minutes early. We had a PD Day with no kids, and we got to leave at 2:30 instead of 3:15. It was unannounced so really exciting when it came out of nowhere, like your dismissal probably did.
We spent all day sitting on lunchroom seats . . . hard circles with no backs. We deserved a break!

Will you be going back is the big question ?? of course! I'm not a 100% thrilled with the new job, but it's not a hellmouth by any means, there are bills to pay, and oh - ya - I owe the IRS a lot of money! and those student loans..... nope, reporting back to the man Monday morning!
