People are just plain crazy and rude. Does the kid need 8 more stuffed animals?

I can't believe a single parent didn't call her out on that. I'm not confrontational by any means, but I would not have pulled a bear from a crying kid without a fight.

Good luck getting anyone to come to your kid's birthday party next year, Mom.

Nope, no chance of this kid growing up to be a self-entitled bratty adult . People wonder why I prefer animals.

Wow! That is stooping pretty low.
I wonder how next year’s birthday party will go. I see a lot of no shows.

The sad part is, a previous store owner in the article said she's seen this happened before, on more than one occasion.
I can see how some cost conscious parent may not want to blow a lot of money buying a bunch of bears for other kids (I don't know how expensive those things are) but if you don't have the budget for that, throw a party at home and stick with cupcakes and punch. If your birthday girl has her heart set on her own build a bear, take her there alone, as part of her present. But taking all the guests there and then forcing them to hand over their animals to the birthday girl? - that has to be the worst option of all.
I kind of feel sorry for the birthday girl, no doubt she'll get the stink eye at school for a while because her mom was so gauche.

But, she's out the money anyhow. It's not like she returned them for her money back, she gave them all to her daughter. Those things can be spendy. It's pretty hard to walk out of there without spending at least $30/bear. If you throw a lot of accessories on they can get up to $90, and it sounds like they had free reign to do whatever they wanted.

That's the thing - if she didn't want to blow $90 on other people's kids, that's totally understandable, but she should have done punch and cake instead. Or pay for them to all go to a swimming pool, or a pizza place, or some other more reasonable treat.
OR - she could have made it clear up front that each kid would be making an animal that would be presented to the birthday girl, giving the other parents the option to either pay for a second animal that their kid could keep, or beg off the party for some fake family reason.
So many options, and she picked the worst one.

I feel like the best mother ever after reading that. Right?!? My worst bday mistake was using too much blue frosting on our monster cupcakes that left all the kids looking like smurfs.

I feel like the best mother ever after reading that. Amen. I had been feeling terrible since DD's birthday is Saturday, and I'm hoping to get away with no friend party at all this year. If she even mentions it (she hasn't yet), I'm going with the get together after school is out. We have at least one thing every single weekend from now until then anyway, so maybe I can get away with it. Maybe...

Not sure how old she is, but I think just having a family party is completely acceptable. You can always let her have a day out with a few friends on a day far in the future too.

Neither of my kids have ever had a "friends" party and they seem to be coping pretty well. 😀

Does blast mean knock her block.off? That's what would have happened if she tried to take my kid's bear. How embarrassing for the daughter. Nobody wants Mommy Dearest.

I hope the mother of the birthday girl has to wallow in the well deserved scorn dumped on her for a long time.

Not her fault her mom is Joan Crawford.

Not her fault her mom is Joan Crawford. At least Joan Crawford made her child give away her birthday gifts to the less fortunate. This lady takes the cake...not only does she expect people to give her child a gift but she also expects them to give her kid the bears they made. It is really downright cruel to have a kid make a bear that they can't even keep.
This kind of crap seems to be happening more often (though perhaps it is just social media bringing it to the surface these days). We have brides telling bridesmaids they have to spend a certain amount on their bridal showers, couples putting expectations on people regarding cash gifts, etc. I must be WAY out of wack these days because anytime I host any type of event I am more worried about my guests having a good time than anything else.

And next year she will be all over the place/media crying that no one came to her child's birthday party and those who don't know the back story will be sobbing and sending money, gifts, etc.

I think they are still anomalies otherwise they wouldn't be "news".
