Canada joins new German-France 'alliance' that doesn't include U.S. OTTAWA -- Canada has formally joined a German-French coalition aimed at saving the international world order from destruction by various world dictators and autocrats -- and U.S. President Donald Trump. The initiative is part of ongoing government efforts to shore up international co-operation at a time of waning American leadership and Trump's outspoken disdain of institutions created after the Second World War, including the G7, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. Japan also joined the new alliance during the meeting, and Freeland marked the moment on Twitter posting a photo of herself with Jean-Yves Le Drian, Heiko Mass and Taro Kono, her French, German and Japanese counterparts. "Many of today's greatest challenges are global and they can only be solved when we work together. That is why Canada stands united with its German, French, and and Japanese friends," Freeland said in the photo's caption. www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-joins-new-german-france-alliance-that-doesn-t-include-u-s-1.4380356

Thank you for keeping the lights on.
The metaphor that comes to mind is definitely that of Europe's monasteries during the Middle Ages.

The rest of the world wants nothing to do with a United States ruled by Trump. He's offensive, ignorant, dishonest, has insulted world leaders, ignored agreements and the law, and just an all around asshole. So...good luck with that.

Amen to all that. Now I have a favor to ask. Could you keep the lamp burning for the sake of our kids or our grandkids? We've f'ed up badly. I cannot imagine that this will end well and I do not imagine that many of us, or our children who are watching this unfold, are ever likely to gain admittance to your new club. We'll have too much to answer for and many of our kids will have all sorts of horrifying impulses that will pretty much disqualify them too. Could you just not hold this against our grandkids?

We'll keep a lamp burning, as long as it's not powered by fossil fuels. It will be a solar-powered lamp.

Good.
It's been clear for a while now that the US is not in a position to have a consistent voice on global issues. Even if we can remove the current occupant of the White House in 2020, I don't see us making much forward progress. Each new candidate is just going to campaign on undoing what the last guy did.
I fear we are going to be treading water, and slowly drowning, for the foreseeable future.

I was half-hoping that our allies (Canada, Britain, etc.) would break off diplomatic relations with the U.S. and announce that they would reconsider and re-establish ties when there was once again an adult in the White House.

The wane started long before Trump. Perhaps, but the last couple of years have demonstrated a rapid acceleration of that decline. It's not quite as bad as when Wile E. Coyote suddenly realizes he ran off the cliff several seconds before, but....

The effects are starting to be noticed. No surprise on the acceleration.

Confidence in the U.S. in countries around the world (which is probably the only way to really measure our influence) grew much higher after the fall that occurred during the Bush administration. It remained high while Obama was in office and declined dramatically after Trump's election. Large majorities in most countries around the world have little or no confidence in Donald Trump, and many of those countries no longer trust the U.S. as a global leader to do the right thing in world affairs or for world peace. Your contention that the decline is due to Obama is ludicrous.

I was referencing your very short term attempt at describing acceleration (Trump) in my answer. Now your changing to a longer term in this post (Bush), and trying to apply my answer to it. Ludicrous indeed.

I expect large population growths in certain areas, along with shifting populations, has more to do with waning influence, than actual momentary political policy of any presidential term.
Our countries energy use, which is a big part of this, is being marginalized by our comparatively shrinking population, percentage wise, as compared to the world population.
We just don't need to get involved as much in foreign affairs, as we are mostly energy self sufficient the last few years.

Canada and Europe loved Obama. Obama comes here and speaks to sold-out crowds, every time. When it comes to US Presidents, Obama has been one of the most loved by Canadians. In fact, a poll from way back in 2009 showed that 82% of Canadians approved of Barack Obama, which is astronomically higher than even our own Prime Minister's rating. www.narcity.com/news/barack-obama-is-coming-to-canada-this-march-to-give-an-inspirational-talk We loathe Trump to the point that there were petitions to keep him out of the country. Same with Europe. Petitions to keep that rude, bloated asshole out of first world countries.

the biggest failure of US foreign policy since Vietnam was the Iraq War. period. Obama had nothing to do with it.

As a matter of fact YOU owe US money. Any ETA on when we're getting those billions back? No cheques. You can't be trusted.
