From what I've seen so far, don't think much will be left.

Watching the live feed on ABC. So sad. My son let me know about it shortly before the spire fell. Watching that was a gut punch. Such a beautiful building with so much history.

From what I've seen so far, don't think much will be left. It has stood since the 1100's. It will be rebuilt without a doubt.

It looks so magnificent. Very sad to see it being destroyed by fire.

If I remember right, we've forgotten how to make the kind of stained glass that made the Rose Window. They replaced some after WWII but couldn't quite match the original. No telling how many other ancient works of art also perished.
Truly tragic.

Montreal's Notre Dame Basilica is ringing the bells in sympathy.

This is the confessional here, and I imagine that a great deal of irreplaceable art will be lost in Paris. A tragedy.

From what I've seen so far, don't think much will be left. A late report says that treasures in the cathedral and artwork was saved...basic structure...believe the twin towers in front of cathedral and bells are intake.... cost to rebuild as some are speculating...will be tremendous...St Patrick's in New York just finished a renovation ...over $100 million spent ….and raised by the church...plus to rebuild as it was...it took 100 years plus to finish...plus the artisans to build such are few if available at all...though Europe cities did a fantastic in rebuilding many destroyed cities from second WW so who knows...over 13 million visit the cathedral every year...I have visited twice in my lifetime and to just sit inside....so special and soothing and I am not a follower of Catholicism, or a Christian...felt same way when visited St Patrick's...also cathedral in Montreal also Westminster in London too......actually same when visited the more modern Cathedral in Hartford , Ct too...something special about those places...Have not visited our own National Cathedral in Washington but from watching funerals there of some of our important folks over the years...seems to also be a special impressive place... ================================= www.yahoo.com/news/live-updates-fire-at-notre-dame-cathedral-in-paris-173732973.html

Absolutely heartbreaking to see those images. I visited in 1978 and it is making me want to dig out old photos.

Somewhere in my home is an old Polaroid photo of me and a Notre Dame gargoyle looking out over the city. I may see if I can find it. Picture taken around 1971? Correction: I think the pic is just a gargoyle and not the two of us.

I was looking at our photos today. Lots of the architecture and stained glass, etc. but none of us actually there...
Really cool though, and i remember this so well, the day was so bright and beautiful and everyone was milling around outside and the birds just perching in the bushes and they would eat out of your hands...

I've been to Notre Dame Cathedral too. It had some great art work but I've always had mixed feelings about it. It's another artifact of the Catholic Church hoarding millions of dollars that could be going to help their flock. Now they will raise and spend millions more to restore it. Just doesn't seem so spiritual to me.

I look upon such expenditures as coming from the people....their faith...In this case it was a decision that was made 850 years ago....my suggestion on your dilemma….get over it already... guess u could say the same over all great monuments...Washington monument...those other special places in DC...for that matter. Westminster..Buckingham Palace...those English great homes... Kremlin, Tal Mahal, Stone Hinge....as examples.

St Peters Basilica yes, physically uncomfortable almost Ill by the gilded opulence... but not Notre Dsme... it didn’t have that effect on me. It was much more ‘modest’ in its splendor, sweeping architecture, felt reverent...

Notre Dame felt to me like the heart of Paris, with so much history, both secular and spiritual, that occurred there. Kings and queens, revolutions, etc. It encapsulated the history of the city.
St Peters, while decorated beautifully, was 100% Catholic history, and since I'm not Catholic, it didn't have as much of an effect on me. It did seem like the seat of all the Catholic power in the world, unlike Notre Dame, which seems so - French.

Consider the change that has taken place in American monuments. From Washington to Lincoln to the Marine Corps War Memorial to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (and subsequent Korean and WWII Memorials).

Heard on the today show they've already raised 300M for repairs. Do they not insure buildings over there?
