After some conversations I've had somewhat recently (mostly focused on my independence and "if you ever get remarried"... I've been single for 18 years. Remarried may be off the table for me, and I'm completely cool with that.)
About ever getting married again and my statement that I refuse to change my name again ("Oh, buy you just hyphenate it!" Uh, no. I like my last name. It's so unique in the states that unless you are that one guy living on the east coast, if you live in the states and have the same last name, we are probably related within two generations above, or two below. It's my name and I'm not giving it up again.)
About "Would (a spouse) let you do x?" (I'm a grown-ass woman, with an established career, home, and retirement account! No one gets to decide they are going to "let me x")
With the second one, I thought "there should be a shorter description for this. Then I thought "Holy sh..! Am I middle aged?!"
So, what age would you consider middle aged?

I consider middle age to be about ten years above my current age. So.....78? Forty and above.

45 -60?
I actually felt young at 45. I was starting my life after the divorce around then. It was pretty awesome. My kids were both in college at that point. I still had 20 years left for a decent career.
My daughter is 42. She has a 3-year-old . . . and a 5-year-old . . . and an 8-year-old . . . and a 10-year-old . . . and a 12-year-old.
I think she will have to skip middle age and jump straight to elderly when she gets the last one through college. I have to remember to tell her that (NOT!).

Yay The Walk of the Penguin Mich ! I'm not old. At 70, I'm middle-aged! In my head I'm about 12. In my knees, I'm more like 90. ETA: To answer the question, I have no idea what is considered middle-aged now. I tend to think of anyone younger than me as "young." Probably in the 40-65 range or thereabouts.

40-60 until I hit 60. Then it will be 30-70. I'm a flexible person!

I would say I've always put middle age beginning about 40.
Since there's also old age, I guess I'm divvying ages up by about 40 years at a time. So old age must start at 80 or so in my scale.
That means I'm in the early portion of the middle age bracket, right?
Slightly off topic, the other day I stumbled across some articles on aging well, exercise, living well, etc. One had a link to a real age calculator. That pegged my "age" at 36 - feels about right.

I always thought golden or senior starts at 60, then elderly at 80 all the way up to older than dirt.

You can stay middle age until you get your first senior citizen discount.

Crap, y'all are putting me in there or way too close! (I'm 40). I googled it, they said "common acceptance" is 55 +/- 10 years, so generally 45 to 65. I'm going with that (well, for 4 1/2 more years, then I might reconsider ) I've felt "old" most of my life (due to starting work young, owning a house and having a kid young, etc), so I want to enjoy feeling young-ish for just a little while longer!

You can stay middle age until you get your first senior citizen discount. Ugh! That doesn't work for me. I was recently at the local grocery store, and I got the senior citizen discount of 5% off, and she didn't even ask me. That hurt, since I don't yet qualify, but maybe I should be happy about it, being a good YMer & all...

Well I plan to live to a 100. And being an adult starts at 18. I figure there are 3 stages to adult hood. Young adult, middle age and senior. So 100-18 is 82. 82 divided by 3 gives 27 years to each. 18-45 adult, 45-63 middle age and 63 an up old.

I was getting my hair cut a while ago and the girl doing it (she was 18/19) said something about 35 being middle-aged. Uh, no! (And not just because I'll be 35 next year ) I'm going 50-70 for middle age. The older my parents get, the older I consider "old." Some people are old at 60. They look and act like they're 80. Some people age is just a number. My parents will be 65 and 68 this year, and I don't consider them as old or looking old. My dad does more than most people half his age - rides his bike every day, swims a mile three times a week, etc. My mom still walks ten miles a day with me at Disney world when we go.

I also will never marry again, as hubs said just hire a handyman! I agree, but I would miss hubs terribly, he was gone so many years, its nice to have him here most of the time. Sometimes I get aggravated. but 95% of the time he is good to have around. I can't imagine trying to learn about someone again and particularly their financial health. I am not about to take the chance of giving up what we have and our comfortable retirement.

I think I'm there. Pretty sure I'm going to live to 114. and I want them to say at my memorial service "she went way too young. No one should die when just middle aged". DS1 probably could carry that off.

And I'm about 28 years older than you. The checkout clerk has to enter my DOB into the register before (s)he can continue scanning my groceries.

Grocery store here gives a 10% senior discount on Thursday. I sometimes forget to ask but got it. One day I forget and didn't get it. Explanation was someone was asked if they wanted the discount and they were upset because they weren't 55. Must have been a woman.

They are supposed to ask for proof of age for beer and wine sales to keep from getting fined by serving police cadets who are plants. Often my receipt says proof of age override.
