U.S. charges Assange after London arrest and seven years of solitude in Ecuador embassyLONDON (Reuters) - British police dragged Julian Assange out of Ecuadorean embassy in London on Thursday after Ecuador abruptly revoked his seven-year asylum, paving the way for his extradition to the United States for involvement in one of the biggest ever leaks of classified information. The frail-looking WikiLeaks founder, with white hair and a long beard, was carried head first out of the Ecuadorean embassy shortly after 0900 GMT by at least seven men to a waiting police van, after shouting “This is unlawful, I’m not leaving.” British Prime Minister Theresa May greeted the news in parliament. “The whole House will welcome the news this morning that the Metropolitan Police have arrested Julian Assange, arrested for breach of bail after nearly seven years in the Ecuadorean embassy,” May said to cheers and cries of “Hear, hear!” from lawmakers. So, he is asking that he not be extradited to any country where he might face torture or the death penalty, implying that the US would engage in one or the other.
I am no longer certain that we would not engage in either.
Has he done anything for which he might face the death penalty?
If he is extradited to the US, wouldn't Trump be indebted to him? So would he be pardoned, or is someone outside of Trump's control going to be able to prosecute, convict and sentence him?

he won't be tortured or executed.
he will, however, be subpoenaed and questioned.
if he is forthcoming, he will get little or no time.

Interesting, it's the same strategy he uses when someone from his administration fucks up.
"I never knew him, he almost didn't work here, I think I saw him once in passing but never talked to him." Same guy he was braying about being such a wonderful, excellent guy and his BFF ever maybe six short months before.
I sense a pattern.

‘I Know Nothing’ — Trump Changes His Tune on WikiLeaksWASHINGTON (AP) — It was a far cry from “I love WikiLeaks!” Asked about Thursday’s arrest, Trump said at the White House, “It’s not my thing. I know there is something having to do with Julian Assange. I’ve been seeing what’s happened with Assange and that will be a determination, I would imagine, mostly by the attorney general, who’s doing an excellent job. So, he’ll be making a determination . I know nothing really about him.” “It’s not my deal in life.” But WikiLeaks was Trump’s deal in 2016 as he welcomed the political boost his campaign got and cheered on the release of Clinton campaign emails. On the same October day that the “Access Hollywood” tape emerged, revealing that Trump had bragged in 2005 about groping women, WikiLeaks began releasing damaging emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, John Podesta. Trump and his allies, facing a tough battle in the campaign’s final month, seized on the illegal dumps and weaponized them. “WikiLeaks, I love WikiLeaks,” Trump said in Pennsylvania. “This WikiLeaks is like a treasure trove,” Trump said in Michigan. “Boy, I love reading WikiLeaks,” Trump said in Ohio. All told, Trump extolled WikiLeaks more than 100 times, and a poster of Assange hung backstage at the Republican’s debate war room. At no point from a rally stage did Trump express any misgivings about how WikiLeaks obtained the emails from the Clinton campaign or about the accusations of stealing sensitive U.S. government information, which led to the charges against Assange on Thursday. He's the first DOJ person who agreed hide all Trump's dirty laundry for him, rather than recusing himself or leaving (or getting fired for not hiding it).

Shouldn't we all answer for what we do? "The bottom line is that he has to answer for what he has done, at least as it has been charged," she said of Assange. ... On Thursday, U.S. law enforcement issued an extradition request in relation to Assange's activities with former U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who was convicted in 2013 of leaking state secrets to WikiLeaks.

In all honesty, I do not see WikiLeaks as a true "press" in our traditional sense of "freedom of the Press" laws. Many people feel they are a member of the International Press. I do not have enough knowledge to discuss this issue sufficiently. I just posted a link on Hillary's thoughts on the issue, as another thought on the issue. Right now, if President Obama could legally release Chelsea Manning for her crimes, I am of the opinion, Assange should be left alone. Even saying that, I do not know if I am anywhere near being correct on the issue.

Assange hated the Clintons for years prior to the last election. He saw the election as a way to screw her over, and he did.
Of course Hillary wants to see him locked up forever.

He likes to pretend he's exposing corruption and bad government, but IMHO, he has axes to grind and uses WikiLeaks for a personal vendetta cloaked in pious public interest.
Plus, he is an attention whore, and a rapist.

Nothing that I read in the link suggests that it is personal for H. Clinton.

I don't get what is the big deal about that. He talks a lot about a lot of things that he knows nothing about.

I quite like the idea of Wikileaks..... If someone in a position of power is corrupt ... then we can know about it and act accordingly. People in positions of power don't like it, of course, because they like to operate with impunity which means its probably the end for Assange. On a more realistic level.... We need to protect whistle blowers and put in procedures for people who have concerns..... in all our large organisations. Transparency and accountability.
