This may belong under Sports, but it is more money - related, so I figured I would ask it here. I know we have a few golf-knowledgeable types on the board. I was in the phone store, looking at accessories for my new phone. I happened to overhear a customer on his phone, in what sounded like a conversation with a travel or booking agency of some sort. The gist of the conversation: he was taking his dad to the Masters Golf Tournament this year. I am no fan of the game, but I think that is a really nice thing to do for your dad. The part of the conversation that stopped me in my tracks: he had to put down a $5,000.00 deposit for whatever he was doing at the tournament. I understand the event runs four days, and it is a bucket list trip for many aficionados of the sport, but dayum, that is a lot of money. For those kinda bucks, I want to play in a foursome with Nicklaus, Palmer and Mickelson, there must be fine food and adult beverages AND a gold-plated porta-potty wheeled around behind us to every hole. This is serious deposit money. Do people really spend this to go to this event? I am assuming the guy on the phone was a local, so driving from here rather than flying to Augusta National was doable.

Yep. I have friends who follow college basketball, and they easily spend 4-5 figures of $$$ paying for tickets, last minute airline flights and hotel rooms to go to games. They do this every single year.
I have no no idea what they spent to get tickets to Wimbledon.

My cousin was invited to a private party at First Avenue last night with the Goo Goo Dolls playing put on just to watch Final 4 games. Somebody plunked down some serious change to host that.

I don’t like golf but I have spent quite a bit over the years going to playoff and championship games when one of my teams make it. I have 5 NFL season tix, 3 of them are nosebleeds that I waited 11 years on the wait list for and 2 are personal seat licenses they are really good seats that I paid 18k for a couple months ago. The money I make on the 3 nosebleeds will pay for the 2 good seats and then some, I should be able to recoup the 18k for the PSL’s over the next 10 years.

My company sponsored a tent at the US Open golf event a few years ago. The price was well over $100k. Augusta is insanely expensive! My previous employer had a tent there, but that was a huge international accounting firm, that Phil has as a sponsor.
A couple years ago I took my parents to Pebble Beach for their 50th anniversary. It was a bucket list for my dad who is a huge golfer. He would never spend the money though. Even though Pebble Beach is public, the best way to reserve a tee time is to stay at the resort. So I put my parents in the resort for 2 nights, and paid for him to golf 2 of the courses. I think the cost was about $4,000. But to watch my dad and son (who just road along with his grandpa), walk up the 18th green of Pebble Beach was priceless!!

Wow, I clearly had no idea how much this could be. Worth it though, if golf is your game and some of these places are on your must-do list. I'm just not a sports spectator, so my mind is boggled by the money involved.

I love sports, and would LOVE to go to different events like Wimbledon, the Kentucky Derby, etc., but when you realize how much it costs just to get in the door, I'd rather put the money into an IRA. I'll get a better view on television, anyway.

Oops, I mean queue.

Most sports at the professional level are insanely expensive. Many are at the college level.
The seat tax charged by colleges to even buy season tickets is ridiculous and no longer tax deductible. Since I no longer live where my team is, I am giving up my season tickets next year and making donations to the programs I support.
Some professional and collegiate teams are now tracking online websites and revoking season tickets if they are sold on the secondary market.

If you like college football, go see a game at a smaller college, instead of a university. The tickets are quite affordable. I went to a game last fall & all tickets were $10 or less. And, you get a lot closer to the action, so you can actually see what's going on.

And DD gets to play on the playground!

I have a friend whose son and DIL go to the Master's each year. In addition to the expected over-the-top expenses like tickets, hotel, airfare, etc. they have to spend mega $$ for care for their daughter, late-in-life adoptee from Russia (dad is 60!) with challenges. I think they need the escape.

DH and I were driving over to Seabrook Island and passed through Augusta during the tournament. We drove past the gates to the club, saw the mass of cars parked everywhere, enjoyed a glimpse of beautiful turf over rolling hills, and it was free.
As close as I ever need to get to that tournament, and as much as I'm willing to spend.
