..., my return question is, how do you know it's not ? I don't. Which brings us back to the OP: ... I think that closing a border that has "(n)early 400 million travelers a year, $2.3 billion worth of trade, nearly 30 million trucks, rail cars and cargo containers every year" should be worth more than a tweet announcement. I think it is a good thing to have a President who doesn't send people to Wikipedia in an attempt to understand what he is talking about.

I'm still waiting for the source, of where he said he was going to close it for a year, as your data infers he is going to do. Then we can talk about the actualities of whether he's just 'threatening action' to get Mexico on board with helping stop the illegal border crossings. Or is he going to close the border for a different amount of time ?

If he follows through on this, closing the border is going to burn farmers. Again. My home state ships a lot of corn to Mexico. It's not like the farmers didn't get burned enough by the tariffs. So, what's going to happen to all of that corn?
Don't know how the national news is reporting this where you all live, but here they're saying about 40% of the fresh produce this time of the year comes from Mexico. So, what are you planning to eat if this ends up being something that lasts a long time? I don't eat avocados, which they're saying we'll run out of in about 3 weeks, but there are other foods I would miss.

Last week: "If Mexico doesn't immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug (sic) our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week," he tweeted.link This week: "If we don't make a deal with Congress, the border's going to be closed," he told reporters in the Oval Office. "100 percent."link Next week: We will just have to wait and see I guess

So many parts for autos/trucks/etc. are made in Mexico.

Isn't that what Obama asked them to do, and they did and that is why the numbers dropped pretty significantly over the past few years?
Not that I have seen. If anything things have gotten a lot worse. I live in the Phx Az area, and attend a church that does a lot with groups that help LEGAL immigrants. And everyone is getting overwhelmed.
I don't think Mexico is doing anything about their southern border except encouraging travelers to keep going/

How exactly is the Mexican government or whoever he was referring to, supposed to prevent individuals from entering the US illegally? Our government can't force American citizens to stop doing a lot of things they shouldn't be doing, so I'm confused about what he expects them to do to stop it. If Mexico stopped the migrants from coming across it's Southern border, that would cut off the path to the U.S.

We asked the US to please control the number of border jumpers who cross into Canada. They didn't. They did absolutely nothing. But Trump is demanding that Mexico do something? That's rich. However, we didn't close the border because that would be STUPID! I'm not sure how the US would stop anyone. Last time I checked, I'm free to go anytime. I can swim the river right to Canada, and nobody will bother me. I'm pretty sure Mexico is the same. You just leave. No one stops you. unless you are bringing in guns, ammo, or Money,, Money,, Money..

Now we won't be able to get Mexican produce? Now we won't be able to get Mexican produce?
Just fly it in ,,,, you have money.

It's good, if you don't know that closing the border means stopping all traffic at the ports of entry. All traffic... As a joke about Trump, it's good as it's funny. I guess our posters will have no problem understanding the economic size differential between the US and Mexico. And Trumps threat of complete border closing, will be just as effective as the little short one earlier, that got Mexico to move that first caravan 15 miles back from the border. Like the tariffs, the comparative effect on the US economically, is very small. On Mexico, not so small. As Klain asserts, maybe we don't need the wall, after the squeeze is on Mexico, a little bit. I can see it as a 50 billion savings. The cost to Mexico is going to be huge, They can't sell their product, so it rot on the vine,
All those migrants now stuck at the border, with no means to go any where, So Mexico has to deal with them, food, water, shelter..
possible riots!! You know Mexico may want to pay for a wall to get the border open again!

He is not going to close the border, anymore than he is going to reveal a beautiful health care plan or get Mexico to pay for the wall.....The man will say anything that pops in his head.....

Mexico might be able to try to dissuade their own citizens from migrating, but what are they supposed to do with the migrants who are not their own citizens?
Build their own wall on their southern border? Maybe they realize large walls are mostly decorative and not very effective.
Maybe the US should be helping to establish humanitarian refugee camps on the borders of countries like Guatemala to shelter the desperate people trying to flee those countries, so they don't feel such a need to migrate to the nearest country where they think they might find a job and a safe place for their kids. Instead, Trump cut off a billion in aid we were previously sending them, which will mostly likely just make the problem worse.

Yet he has already closed it once. Just because the mainstream media didn't cover it, doesn't mean it didn't happen. It was amazing just how fast Mexico moved those migrants 15 miles away from the border.

Why are we the one's that need to send money??
Why aren't all of those wonderful Socialist countries around the World opening their borders and sending money?? Venezuela much closer for them.

If you're drinking the mainstream media koolaid, he has no plans at all. I work with groups doing activities that involving problem solving. An example of an activity I do with younger people (11-14 year olds) is them getting their entire group safely over a cable spool on a metal bar hanging between two trees. I ask them to give me a plan before anyone leaves the ground and then I step back. What they give me following their talking together frequently leads to a discussion on the difference of having "ideas" and having "a plan". Please see my reply #66 in which I highlight President Trump's "plan" using his words with no media commentary included. I started this thread because I want the President of the United States to present us with a plan, not just ideas.

Heck, I'd be ok with announcing ideas and stating what group or panel is working on the planning needed to turn an idea into a reality.

What was the national problem trump said he had a solution for during the 2016 campaign season but he would only announce the solution if he was elected president? Anyone remember? I cannot.

Heck, I'd be ok with announcing ideas and stating what group or panel is working on the planning needed to turn an idea into a reality. That is a lot to ask from President "I alone can fix it" Trump. President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on Congress to take action on immigration, ... "Congress has to meet quickly and make a deal. I could do it in 45 minutes. link But wait, where did we hear this before? A day after claiming the ongoing government shutdown “could be solved in a 45-minute meeting,” President Donald Trump stormed out of a conversation with Democratic leadership after roughly 30 minutes on Wednesday. link
