Betsy Devos plans to cancel all funding for the Special Olympics. Ain't it great? She will save enough for three golf trips to Florida! Cha ching!

Gotta find a way to make up for that big chunk of change Trump spent giving all his millionaire buddies a great tax break.
You can only strip Medicare and Medicaid of so much, gotta make up the rest in other programs.
The 2020 campaign ads are writing themselves.

While I am not a fan of Betsy Devos, I do not know why Special Olympics funding was coming out of federal education dollars. Education money should be spent on education only. I've seen local schools shutting down art, music, various sports, because there is no money.

Does Special Olympics receive any monetary resources from the Olympic fundings? If so, how much and why?

Why isn't Special Olympics privately funded? I thought it was, because I get calls from them asking for donations.

Devos can ask trump for some of that military money he is moving into an account to build his border wall.
Money better spent on these Olympians.

I just heard a former Edu Dept. officer speaking on NPR. He claims that in the last three years federal oversight of student loan proceedings has been virtually non-existent. Consumer Watchdog is a foreign phrase over there. Good time to be exploiting 18 year old kids! Are they really kids? In another thread, people are in favor of letting "kids" even younger vote. We need to decide if these are just kids who need protecting or if they are people that are mature enough to have a say in how our country is run.

They are in a gray area between childhood and adulthood, aren't they? But since most kids are 16-17 when they start their college quest with real effort, I would say yeah, they are. I must say, for many of them the parents need as much protection from the predatory lenders as the kids do, maybe more! What makes you think the parents are any smarter than the kids?

It looks like the Republicans are confused about the Robin Hood story. They're stealing from the folks who need funding the most, and giving it all to the rich. Just when you think the Republicans can't stoop any lower, they now are trying to take funding from the disabled. Talk about white trash.

They support everything he does 100%. This is exactly what they voted for. Fucking over everyone but them. Remember, there's no line that can be crossed that would bother them, this is EXACTLY what they keep cheering for. Build the wall and fuck em all.

Why is it taking money away from education, is my question.

How is Kamala going to get a $13,500 raise for every teacher if the money is going elsewhere ?

The funding for special education for the disabled is also being cut, as well as funding for the deaf and blind.

“We had to make some difficult decisions,” DeVos said in front of the House Appropriations subcommittee on education. As the Detroit Free Press explains, DeVos’s 2020 plan “calls for eliminating billions in grants to improve student achievement by reducing class sizes and funding professional development for teachers as well as cutting funds dedicated to increasing the use of technology in schools and improving school conditions.” In addition, the budget would cut special-education grants to states by 26 percent, and take funding away from programs benefiting deaf and blind students. nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/03/betsy-devos-wants-to-cut-funding-for-the-special-olympics.htmlAint Trumplandia grand?

Sort of. My youngest has graduated from public school, and is not in the Special Olympics, but is disabled. I worry about the next generation of disabled kids coming up. It's not like there is a lot of money in the pot for people with disabilities. Stripping programs that already has very little funding already is wrong on so many levels. And trust me, the families of these kids don't have "extra" money to burn, either. It mostly goes into therapy, medication, etc, because even government programs don't even come close to covering expenses these families deal with every day.

But some where along the line, she wants to increase funding to charter schools...you know, those that many are failing while others are being investigated, etc.! The schools that have no specific goals that are required to be met....

As long as he's "owning the Libs", making them and only them money & continues to remove women's rights, they support everything this administration does. This is what they voted for. This is everything they ever dreamed of their gov't doing. It's going to kill, marginalize, remove, destroy, or bankrupt all the right people for them. Some of them are looking forward to it with excitement.

Any sources for these statements, not caring, looking forward to it with excitement, etc ? Besides the usual stereotyping ?

The heat for the lyin' trump and DeVos must have been too much. President donald trump says Special Olympics will be funded, Betsy DeVos says that's what she wanted all along.President donald trump on Thursday said the administration will fund Special Olympics following a whirlwind of criticism this week over the White House's budget proposal that had eliminated federal funding for the program. "The Special Olympics will be funded, I just told my people," trump told reporters outside the White House. "I want to fund the Special Olympics and I just authorized funding of the Special Olympics." Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a statement she was pleased with the president's decision. “I am pleased and grateful the President and I see eye to eye on this issue and that he has decided to fund our Special Olympics grant. This is funding I have fought for behind the scenes over the last several years,” DeVos' statement said. Scrap the wall → $30B saved and that is just building it (on budget) followed by annual savings on the maintenance of that wall

What about Special Education for the cognitively disabled? Funding for the deaf and blind? Will that be reinstated as well?

Sure, force women to bear disabled children, and then refuse to pay for any services for them.
Sounds about right for the Rs. What a bunch of dicks.
