Is there any such thing as an honest and ethical dealership and salespeople? My last experience in car buying I left there feeling like I got screwed royally.
DH will be looking for another car in less than a year and I have a year and half to go. Both of our cars and leased and I won't lease another car. I don't like the feeling of non-ownership. Both of us have Cruzes and don't like them. They are built too low to the ground. Can't get out of a driveway straight without scraping the underpan, the LED headlights don't give enough forward vision for night driving, and I have the drivers seat as high as it will go and I still have to sit on a cushion.
I know what I want but it isn't being built anymore. I wan a SMALL pick-up.
So far all I have found are salespeople that see a 70+ yr old lady that 'doesn't know what she is doing'. I have worked on more cars that they have owned. Idiots …….
Hope to find someone within my timeframe

We needed to replace both of our vehicles about 3 years ago. We looked and looked, and ended up buying both from private sellers found on Craigslist. Just the prices at dealerships were no good--never mind the prospect of dealing with the salespeople.

Last time we bought a car, it was through USAA’s service and it was easy. I would not hesitate to do this again. Costco also has a buying service, and I think AAA and AARP do too. Not sure about those.
We had to drive to a dealer in Everett as there was no place locally, but that’s only an hour down the road.

I used my credit union's auto broker and also went to a very good, very ethical dealership. They do exist, but not very many of them. Very happy with the experience and the price of the car. I would use a buying service like this again, and recommend it to anyone.

DH and I bought our last 2 used from Enterprise Rental. Very happy with the experience; it's a set price although they did cut the price on one after we took it to our mechanic and he found a minor issue. You have to arrange your own financing. There's an auto broker in town and I'd sell through him; might not get top dollar but the acr would be gone and I'd get cash (did that with our older car after DH died). I might even buy through him.
Won't go to another dealer unless it's through Costco or AAA.

I'm going to use the car-buying service available through USAA or Costco for my next car purchase. The entertainment I used to get from annoying the salesweasel during car-purchase negotiation dance-off has lost its luster.
Now that I have become an old person, it's just not as much fun as it used to be.
Also, get off my lawn.

Do your research on the vehicle of interest prior to going into the dealer.

I am using Costco when I buy my next car.
If I don't like it, I will pay a private broker.
I fucking hate buying cars.

The "angry Bear ate my quoted part.
I bought my car last year thru Enterprise. I had been looking and researching since September and finally bought in February. I nailed it down to four on their lot that I thought I would like to test drive. Printed out the info on website and called ahead. Needed to know if they took trade-in and what the "add on's like tax etc. were. Made apt with sale lady that helped over the phone. Went in - no pressure - test drove my four cars and said I'll take that one!!
They gave me more than I had estimated (via internet searches) for my clunker In February they had a special and added $500 to trade in. (surprise since I didn't see anything about it on website) I wrote a check and drove my chariot home all within maybe 3 hrs.
I was dreading going to car lot since the last 4 cars I had bought I bought from friends and neighbor. It was soooooo easy. I knew exactly how much I was going to spend and came within $4.89 to my good
ETA: I didn't limit my search to Enterprise - we have hundreds of dealers and car lots here - that is just where I ended up after 6 months of looking.

My sister in law just bought with USAA. No fuss except the closest dealer didn't participate.
I would consider it next time. The last two I bought, I did my research on price, found a place with advertised prices near Edmunds for my area and called and asked for an out the door price.
Went in picked the one I wanted from the options and did the paperwork.

How does the usaa broker work? I don't have any usaa products, but my dad was a member so I think I qualify somehow.

They have pretty good customer service if you contact them. DH got it from his dad. We have a checking and savings account there in addition to our car and house insurance. There's a personal property policy on my jewelry as well. I'm not sure how DH managed to pull the house insurance out to get on his own but he did. Real estate taxes are paid via escrow. I'm not exactly sure how the auto thing works. I believe they come up with a price basically them doing the negotiation.

I just bought our most recent used car through USAA. Truecar was involved somehow. I absolutely loved how easy it was. The hard part was shaking one skeezy dealer, who literally chased after us asking what he “needed to do to get us in this car today.” I thought DH was going to die he was trying so hard not to laugh. If you’re buying used I would vet the dealerships a bit—the one we had trouble with had several reviews talking about how “pushy” they were. I should have paid attention to those. I did blast them in the survey. If you finance through USAA and use the buying service you get a reduced interest rate, too.

DH's company had some kind of deal to obtain cars via the fleet price. Power wasn't a participating dealer but the youngish female salesperson said they would match the price. To their credit they did. No hassle with the financing folks since I just wrote them a check. They gave me $1000 for my old Jeep Grand Cherokee. It had caught on fire due to a packrat building a nest on it and was never right again. It was going to get parted out.
That was nearly 15 years ago. I hope they are still that good. I think Toyota still makes the Pre-Runner which is a smallish truck. That's the chassis my 4Runner is built on.
DH has been bugging me about replacing my car. I still like it and it's at 160k. I don't like the looks and how big the 4Runner has gotten. If I have to replace my car I'm probably looking at a Subaru Forester, Toyota Rav or the Nissan Rogue. I won't get the benefit of six skid plates but I'm not driving out in the desert weeds and boulders like I did when I was first learning to backpack.
Good luck with your search!

However, you have to sign up for yourself under him. I don’t know if you need to be enrolled in products, I have banked with them since 1985. How the process works is you contact USAA and tell them what you want. They contact the dealer, and the dealer contacts you.

Many people’s experiences with car dealers sound like a conversation I had recently with a friend regarding a local car dealer. My friend’s assessment of the dealer was that the dealer tries to convince the customer that they are all family. But, what the dealer doesn’t tell you is they practice incest.

We used the USAA option a couple of times and really liked how it worked. Now we have a salesman we really like and have bought our last 3 cars from him in the past 3 years. We don't typically buy cars that often but the first one we bought was totaled in a wreck and we had to replace it about a month after I bought a new company vehicle using the same salesman. But we are spoiled- my company has a fleet of vehicles and we typically buy 3 or 4 new vehicles a year so they give us really good customer service.
If you don't have an existing relationship with a dealership I'd suggest USAA or a similar service if you are able to do so. If you are in Minnesota I can hook you up with my guy

Car dealer lobbying keeps us with this forced, ridiculous system of new car buying.

We bought our current cars from Craigslist. We had them checked out by a imechanic first and found the whole process much easier and quicker than dealing with a dealership.

I go to multiple dealers for the best price. If I don't get thrown out of at least one dealer, I am not on my game!

I recently put down a deposit and ordered a new car, but it hasn't arrived yet. I couldn't find the combination of color and features that I wanted locally. So far the experience has been ok.
I found the truecar.com price for the vehicle I wanted, and then found a dealer that had an internet price that was $500 cheaper than truecar (except in a color I didn't like). The internet dealer was a couple hours from home, so I printed their price and went to the local dealer, and then they beat that price by another $500. It all seems ok so far, but the car won't actually arrive for another few weeks. I got a good price on the car, but not on my trade in, so the dealer is getting their pound of flesh on that part of the deal.

Can you back out of the trade-in and sell your car privately?

Think I'll look into Costco and see how that works. And hopefully by then someone will make a SMALL pick-up. I'm 5' tall and 77 yrs old ……….. and some of the truck I have been shown the bed side is taller than I am. Need a step-ladder to get in. …………..

The smaller SUVs like the RAV and the Nissan Rogue work really well for older folks who have trouble getting in and out of smaller sedans.
Not that *you* are old, I'm talking about your old friends!

My experience with the Costco buying program through a local dealer was less than satisfactory. The price on the car was invoice price. Other dealers were selling at 1.5% and more below invoice. Any accessories, such as floor mats and bars for the roof rack, were full list price. No discount. Then they insisted on $260 to put identification stickers on various parts of the car. This is the current, easier to do, less expensive to do version of VIN etching. On top of that, the dealer demanded $600 of documentation and dealer fees. This is the same stuff that CarMax charges $99 for.
I declined to accept getting ripped off by these these guys and bought the car for nearly $3,000 less than the Costco program price at a dealer 100 miles down the road.
