Well, it is official. We now have four to five legitimate Democratic politicans and one Independent who have officially announced their campaign. Elizabeth Warren Senator Ms. Harris of California Cory Booker Senator Bernie Sanders Senator I have already forgotten all the second and third tier candidates that have officially announced they are running, and will try to add them to the list.
We now wait to see if former VP Joe Biden will announce to add a fifth candidate, and of course there is always a slight chance Hillary Clinton will announce her campaign entering the fray. I have to admit the first four "top tier" candidates have a chance to make it, as well as Biden if he chooses to run, and all would be a formible opponent for President Trump. When we have the official list of all entries, shall we start a discussion on who is first to disappear, even before the first debate is even scheduled? Maybe have a contest here on who will be in the first tier candidate debate other than the four or five major people, and how many secondary candidates will go a day before in debate? Do we bet on a dark horse candidate being the winner? And of course a contest who predicts the correct person standing at the end of the primaries. If anyone wants to add any other contests, please feel free to add them on the thread. Good Luck to everyone.

Too early for me to wager a guess.
Then there are the unknown factors - At least one of those people you listed has a skeleton just waiting to bust out of the closet, and several others will put their giant feet in their mouths (or their spouses or kids will) in a way that will send their campaign straight into the crapper.
unfortunately in this country we don't pick the best candidate for the job. It's not so much a horse race with the best horse winning, it's a cavalry assault with the lucky few staggering over the finish line.

I'm betting Kasich and Flake will announce shortly after Trump is frog marched to Chopper 1. President Pence will be tainted and no one wants a First Mother anyway so he will be primaried. Other Repo-Cons may step up. Cruz seems grandiose enough to become a serious loser again. Ryan will be rested.

I'm curious to see if any GOPers come forward to try to primary Trump (other than Weld, who already said he would).
Unless, as Dondub said, he gets frogmarched somewhere, Trump will still be very much in the running, but I think there is an opportunity for a GOPer to push to the front.

Major candidates listed from this site in order listed.
Cory Booker, Senator Pete Buttigeig, Mayor of South Bend Indiana (I do not consider him a major candidate, but they have him in this list) Julian Castro former HUD Secretary from Texas John Delaney, former House member Tulsi Gabbard, house Rep from Hawaii Kristen Gillibrand, Senator NY Kamala Harris, Senator California Amy Klobucher, Senator Minnesota Bernie Sanders, Senator Vermont Elizabeth Warren, Senator Massachusetts Jay Inslee Governor, Washington state John Hickenlooper, former Governor of Coloarado
Other considered "second tier candidates"
Michael Arth, ArtistHarry Braun, Consultant Ken Nwadike Jr, documentary film maker Robbie Wells, former football coach Marriane Williamson, Author, spiritual teacher Andrew Yang, Entrepeneur (imo, he belongs in the upper echelon group over two that are there)
This is the current list from the Democratic site. I thought there were others, but they must not have officially announced as of yesterday. Does anyone have a person that is missed at this time? If so, list the person and a link with their announcement to run. I thought Julian Castro's brother was one that also announced, but he is not listed.

FYI, As you know I am not a Democrat. I am legitimately interested in keeping a dialogue going on this thread and will do my utmost to keep any personal bias out of the thread in my comments, and encourage other non Democratic participants to keep it an open and honest discussion as we progress through the primary campaign, and I am hoping dj gets thoroughly involved here over time as we progress. I wanted to start this thread because there has been so many candidates that have already committed, but we also know many will disappear before the first primary, just like so many of the 16 announced Republican candidates died off so fast in the last primary.......

Here are my thoughts in bold:
Cory Booker, Senator Sounds pretty good to me Pete Buttigeig, Mayor of South Bend Indiana (I do not consider him a major candidate, but they have him in this list) Who? Julian Castro former HUD Secretary from Texas Meh John Delaney, former House member Who? Tulsi Gabbard, house Rep from Hawaii her previous anti gay rants will sink her, and they should Kristen Gillibrand, Senator NY I love her Kamala Harris, Senator California I love her Amy Klobucher, Senator Minnesota I love her Bernie Sanders, Senator Vermont Bernie, you're too old. Go home and let the kids take over. Elizabeth Warren, Senator Massachusetts I think she'd do a good job, but the whole stupid Native American kerfuffle is a problem
So that means none qualified people will win.

I almost feel like old-school conservatives (like Flake) would be better off trying to break the Republican party in half vs. trying to swing it back towards a reasonable place. It may not be a winning strategy in 2020, but might be the best long term. Let those Trump/Tea Party/Evangelical weirdos go as far as they want, but bring back a normal fiscally conservative, socially resistant to change, but still kind and reasonable party.

The only one that I could see having a legitimate claim, run a clean campaign and be successful is Betto O’Rourke. All others have too much baggage to put it nicely. Sanders-old, Warren- native, really, Booker-he rubs people the wrong way and so are Harris, Klobucher etc. Gillibrand is kinda whining when she talks. Betto is a good orator, charismatic, young and to put a cherry on the top, a veteran. Knows how to draw a crowd and when he speaks people are listening!

They aren't done signing up yet, either. Biden is still being coy, and there's plenty of time yet to declare. Bloomburg is waiting to see what Biden does.
Bernie still seems to have a devoted following, I've wondered what would happen if he teamed up with one of the young progressives as his VP.... Or he was the VP for one of the young progressives.

Swamp, I agree with your general consensus with each candidate. That is why I wondered about the South Bend Mayor and why he is considered top tier. I believe Kamala Harris is the front runner, and might be a strong candidate, but not sure if her Prosecuter history will hurt her with Democrats. I believe she has a good chance of making it a race against Trump as of today. I see Booker as being right up there too, but I do not think he beats Trump. Bernie, I am not sure about. He has too many liberals running this time syphoning off too many of his followers from last time. Not really sure why Delaney is top tier.
I also think we have to look and see where are previous Presidents since Carter have come from and what political affiliation their state of residence was when elected. I think many candidates are out just based on the state they come from. Georgia 1 term California 2 terms Texas 1 term Arkansas 2 terms Florida 2 terms Illinois 2 terms Last, take your choice, New York or Florida. If NY we definitely did not go with the liberal candidate. Fly over country seems to dominate lately, and Florida is still the south and definitely not considered east coast liberal. Not sure if the next election will select someone from another east or west coast residency, but California does have the chance imo.

Cory Booker, Senator
he just rubs me the wrong way Pete Buttigeig, Mayor of South Bend Indiana (I do not consider him a major candidate, but they have him in this list)
who? Julian Castro former HUD Secretary from Texas
maybe for a VP job with one of the others John Delaney, former House member
naw Tulsi Gabbard, house Rep from Hawaii
she cooked her own goose & her efforts are falling apart already Kristen Gillibrand, Senator NY
NO! Kamala Harris, Senator California
too early, but interesting Amy Klobucher, Senator Minnesota
don't think so...she sounds good...but will she hold up for the long run & how does she treat people? Bernie Sanders, Senator Vermont he is NOT a democrat, he doesn't deserve to run as one Elizabeth Warren, Senator Massachusetts she cooked her own goose with all the NA jabber...and things that have come to light recently
I'm still waiting and will keep waiting until the field has settled down more and we know who really has a chance to get elected. It's way too early yet to settling on one person. The debates will likely sift out a few or bring some more to the front...so waiting.

Fivethirtyeight has been running articles on some of them. I haven't been reading them because I'm not worrying about this right now. It's too early for me to care much. I don't want an old, white guy though. And I think Elizabeth Warren can serve the US better by staying in the Senate.

I saw a bit of Buttigeig talking, and he's a very good communicator, has some good ideas. He went to Harvard and Oxford and was the youngest mayor of a city of at least 100,000 people. He's also a naval intelligence guy and an Afghan vet. However, he's gay and married. Where I live (the Bible belt) there will be people who would never vote for him because of that. However, Dems aren't going to get a lot of Bible votes anyway, and I don't think being gay would be much of a negative in the other regions of the US.
I didn't think America was ready to elect a black guy, prior to Obama, so maybe I'm being too pessimistic thinking America isn't ready to elect a gay guy.

Why does it matter what state someone is from if they resonate nationwide? Because they most of the time bring the state Electoral College votes. Say Bernie runs and as VP he has Klobucher 5hen he automatically draws Vermont and Minnesota( supposedly) Now, If Betto runs and has as a VP someone from Florida then he is almost guaranteed both states which puts him at about 60-65 EC votes and trust me, if he runs he will get Texas no matte4 how much noise trump is making!

Why does it matter what state someone is from if they resonate nationwide? I was just posting where our current Presidents have been from since thew 70's on another response. Minnesota is in the middle of the country, but we do not have many Presidents or VP'S coming from there do we? I think we may not worry about these state residences, but the political parties do pay some attention to it, and throw their weight into the show on who gets in at the end of the process. Take Bernie last election. The party pretty much made sure Bernie would not get there, and he is from Vermont. If he was from a particular large fairly democratic state with lots of EC votes, the result might have been different. Of course with this potential group this year "old stats" might just go out the window this time.......

My problem with the old way, there was lots of payback that came to these cronies, which media ignored. If we went back to this process today I am not sure the media would be more open to expose the bs payoffs.
