What holidays are official at work for you?
Do you get President's Day off?
MLK Jr. Day?
Veterans Day?
Any other days in addition to New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas? Are there any of these 6 you don't get off?
Years ago I started a new job on Jan. 2. Because they allowed no time off except for holidays in the first 90 days, I had no days off until a day I took at Easter in April that year. Never again.

We get the 6 you mentioned plus day after Thanksgiving for a total of 7 days. None of those federal holidays apply to us.

I think we just get the 6, but we get 2 days for Christmas, 2 for Thanksgiving and 2 for 4th of July. I can't remember if we get Good Friday or not. I don't think so.

I get:
New Year’s Day MLK day Presidents’ Day Good Friday Memorial Day July 4th Labor Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving - 2 days Christmas - 2 days
So 12 holidays. Plus 5 personals days on top of 4 weeks PTO.
But I work for an Aussie company in the American HQ. I should probably never ever leave the company, they are extremely generous with all benefits.

New Years Day Christmas Day Memorial Day Labor Day 4th of July Thanksgiving Day MLK day So, I guess 7 days off. But, sometimes not, only 6 if the 4th of July is on a weekend. We do get floating holidays if Christmas and New Years, falls on the weekend. I'm a public sector employee though. Taxpayers would be up in arms if we were given more holiday time than this.

New Years day MLK Jr. Day Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving Day The Day after Thanksgiving Christmas Day There's generally an additional day that gets stuck in with Independence day (if it falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday - to give a 4 day weekend - which is then used to do really Big software/hardware upgrades - since the US offices will all be closed but since I'm in IT - it's often a work day). If July 4th falls on a weekend - we still get a day off - unless you are in IT because it's almost always used for doing big IT stuff - since the majority of offices are "closed". or the extra day will fall at Christmas (very rarely New Years) if it falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday - to give a 4 day weekend. Some years this "additional day" just falls by the wayside because all the holidays are on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. If Christmas or New Years fall on the Weekend we still get a 3 day weekend. Basically there 9 "official" the US Offices are Closed days in any given year. FWIW: I think a lot of jobs have the "no use of "time off balances" in the first 90 days" thing. In the past when I've changed jobs - any time off I wanted in the first 3 or 4 months of employment were generally negotiated and included in the "job offer letter" along with any other perks you could negotiate (like getting into the 401K sooner or a "pay raise" once you were off of "probation" the 3 to 4 month mark... or whatever else you could get.

So giramomma, even public sector you don't get the government holidays? Yours is a really skimpy schedule.

I'm not giramomma -- but I think it depends are what kind of government job you have - I suspect if you work for the Post Office or a Court system or government office - you get more "holidays" off. I know the local school system has a boat load of "holidays" for the kids - but the teachers do not get all of them off. There are some days where the teachers have meetings or "classes" (but no kids are in the schools). I know police and fire protection are always on duty for all Holidays (usually with some pay boost atleast) but they might be a skeleton crew and the "office workers" might not be there.

It's pretty much the norm for most retail jobs and tons of other service sector jobs. (lots of my friends post college kids had jobs that paid a reasonable amount - but they had few if any benefits like health insurance or time off or sick time).

I don't know any public sector employer in my area that doesn't give a crapton of holidays. Most give them ALL off. Colleges maybe the least, as they don't close for veterans day, flag day or presidents day, but they make up for it around Christmas with throwing in the Eve's, if not a whole week.

Let's see:
New year's day MLK Presidents' day Memorial day July 4 Labor day Columbus day Veterans' day Thanksgiving Christmas
Yuck, that's a lot of lost income for me. No hours, no pay.

Our holidays change every 6 months. It's very annoying to plan vacation time in advance around a holiday and then have the holiday be cancelled. In the 2.5 years I've worked here we've had between 6-15 paid holiday days.

We get all federal holidays. Good Friday isn't a federal holiday is it? If it is, that's one we don't get.
But just because it's a holiday doesn't necessarily mean I won't have to work. If I do have to work a holiday, I get extra compensation, either an additional 8 hours of pay or 8 hours of leave to use at another time. I choose which one I want. I usually choose 8 hours of leave. If a holiday falls on a day that I'm not normally scheduled to work, "my" holiday is the the day before, and the same rules apply for that day.

I am contracted to work 225 days/1800 hours per year. It is up to me to determine which exact days and hours.I need to be working. Reality last year was 278 days and 2004 hours. I can count a work day at 2 hours and obviously (based on my postings here) there are plenty of days that I hang out "covering" the office in case the phone rings, the kitchen needs a hand for a few minutes, or one of our guests need something.

I get the federal holidays. It's 10 most years. If Christmas is close to the weekend, we are generally granted the extra day. We got it for 2018.

So for most people so far, President's Day isn't a thing. Three of you don't have defined holidays or don't get paid for any holidays per se at all. Interesting.

I will be working for a couple of hours tomorrow because it worked out that a couple of people who plan to use our facility in the future have it off and can come tour.

Twenty some years ago: I had scheduled on Veteran's Day a girls basketball team to be on the challenge course I ran because they had the day off from school. Waiting for the group to arrive, the old retired guy who covered the office weekend/holidays and I noted that we were the only two people on the staff who had served in the military. I did mention it to my boss, who was trained to take people through the course, a couple of days later. One year later: I had scheduled on Veteran's Day a girls basketball team to be on the challenge course I ran because they had the day off from school. Waiting for the group to arrive, the old retired guy who covered the office weekend/holidays and I noted again that we were still the only two people on the staff who had served in the military. I didn't bother to mention it to my boss again.

New Year's day MLK Day President's day Memorial day July 4th Labor day Thanksgiving and day after Christmas Floating day, usually attached to July 4th or Christmas
So 10 paid holidays.
We get out early day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and NYE but I usually take those days off so it doesn't matter to me.

For teachers, there are no "paid" holidays. That's because we earn our salary per diem. It is just spread over 12 months or whatever. Before someone argues the point, think about whether you consider Saturday or Sunday (or whatever your off days are) as paid "holidays." Your holidays are simply days we don't work. We do get two paid personal days, which feel like floating holidays. Sometimes Presidents Day is an off day, but not this year. The kids are off Monday and Tuesday, but we work both days this year. We have had to work Memorial Day, but not the kids. It is whatever the district's calendar says. I worked for a Saks store with the strangest policy. You had to request to receive pay for a holiday if you actually had to work it. They didn't tell you this in Orientation so I didn't get paid for my first Memorial Day. When I asked my manager why not, he told me that I hadn't asked to be paid. He couldn't pay me retroactively. We didn't get paid extra like time-and-a-half, either, for actually working. I thought that was just totally unfair, but that was the policy.

I've got 13 holidays, which includes a company shutdown between xmas/new year. one day is pretty unique to Boston - Marathon Monday, aka Patriot's Day. I think it's the 15th this year, but it's the Monday during April school break when the Boston Marathon is run. the city mostly shuts down, between actual roadblocks and just tradition. I also grew up along the route, so I appreciate it that much more now that I live in a place that doesn't quite know... I'll be watching the race from my couch, since I won't have to drive up to town that day.
