What does the Great Oracle of YM say? If you start a thread on a community forum such as NextDoor, is it in poor taste to walk away from it and - Not reply to any requests for additional information?
- Not use your option to close comments or remove the thread if it goes off topic including racist rants, advocacy of violence, and attacks on local law enforcement?
Personally, I think if you start it, you own it and should at least return to it and reply to reasonable questions. I also think you should close comments or delete the post if others take it off topic inappropriately.
In this particular instance, the person posted an alert about package theft (porch pirates) and didn't even reply when people asked if a package with their address was among the ones she found. 40 plus posts later, it's still a rant against minorities and discussion of how to deliver lethal firepower through a door, although some have pm'd her requesting she close the comments.

Is there a moderator who could siphon it off?
Sometimes I really cannot get back to the magical internetwebz/social media stuff for a while--sometimes days. Maybe he/she is just working right now?

No genuine moderation because it's a neighborhood page and nobody wants to challenge their neighbors, especially the crazies of which there are a lot. Poster is retired. It was her daughter who posted the anti-police stuff. I get it that she wouldn't want to antagonize the racist/violent posters, but think she should have at least answered folks wanting to know if she found their packages and possessions.

There are local moderators. I have had a private conversation with NextDoor moderator. When a thread gets out of hand, I see no reason to let it continue. While it would be nice if the person who started the thread replied to those asking about their missing packages, it is not required. Not a big fan of NextDoor.

Yes, we officially have local moderators but not really because some have moved or died, and others are simply not willing to offend (and one actually shared the names of those who reported posts so we totally learned not to do that!). It's pretty much free-range here. I did get a few posters removed after I shared screenshots of their threats against local law enforcement with NextDoor national. Since the mod (lead) within a section is totally visible with address etc. to all other members in that section, no one wants to lead and act against the nut jobs who will literally know where they live. I do not post on NextDoor but got a call from someone asking me to call the poster and ask her to remove or close her comments. I declined the privilege.

I think if you post something which should reasonably expect people to have questions, and those people would expect you to answer...it's common courtesy as part of an online community to respond and not just disappear. As an example...if you post here and say "take a look at my budget and give me feedback". You should expect people to have some questions and should probably respond to them.
If you just post "hey, look out for this neighbors". There's no reason to come back to it if you don't want to, no reason you would don the hat of internet police or moderator. It's not your job to police the internet just because you made a post.

Our NextDoor group does this all.the.time.
My favorite was when a woman posted that there were strange people hanging around her house in reflective vests, and to be aware of people using this ruse to get onto their property. . She thought it might be someone from the electric company, so she called them to see if there was anyone working in her area. They told her no.
Turns out, they were changing batteries on the gas meters. She called the wrong utility. It had been well announced, as others in her neighborhood pointed out.

We had "suspicious" persons reported the other day. They were in a vehicle marked AT&T, with uniforms saying AT&T.
