I’m interested in what she did that specifically changed Amazons plan on HQ2. Would you please share more info. Ms Cortez was very outspoken in her opposition to the Amazon deal, received a lot of publicity and face time on tv. I saw her as a huge part of changed plans for Amazon, not the only one that was in opposition. In time there were many residents, legislators, deBlasio and activists that also voiced opposition to the project. here is a link to snopes fact check and it lays out much like the info that I was following. www.snopes.com/fact-check/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-amazon/eta... www.cbsnews.com/news/amazon-cancels-new-hq-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-celebrates-amazon-move-to-scrap-new-york-headquarters-today-2019-02-14/In a statement Thursday, Amazon said the plan fell through due to opposition from "a number of state and local politicians [who] have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward." The first-term congresswoman, whose district includes parts of the Bronx and Queens, was a vocal opponent of the Amazon deal, in which the company promised to create thousands of jobs in exchanges for billions of dollars in tax incentives. Ocasio-Cortez said she thought the cost of the subsidies outweighed the estimated 25,000 jobs Amazon would have created. "If we were willing to give away away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest $3 billion in our district ourselves if we want to. We could hire more teachers, we can fix our subways, we can put a lot of people to work for that money if we wanted to," Ocasio-Cortez told reporters. "There was no guarantee those jobs for the New Yorkers that were here. We were looking at a deal that was not primarily putting the community first."

I support the "Green New Deal" in theory. I do think parts of it are unrealistic. I do think we could easily adapt parts of our life to be more environmentally conscious and reduce our carbon footprint.
I think AOC is very smart, I agree with some things she says, not all.
I saw on TV last night Bernie is running on a Full Socialist Platform? How is he running as a Democrat? They said he set a record for first day campaign fundraising? Did people donate before they thought it through?
I do want to see reduced drug costs and reduced cost/better health care coverage with pre-existing conditions protections. But I don't think those of us who save for retirement, should then have to help those who didn't - same with those of us who pursued higher education vs. those who did not.

You can understand my confusion, considering how often they have tried exactly that.

pages and pages of posts and nothing about the New Green Deal and how big of a scam the radical Dems are trying to foist on America? Alexandria Ocasio Cortez played a huge part in Amazon deciding not to locate in her district, the lost jobs and revenue... Many of the 2020 Dem Presidential candidates that support this proposal, will support of this proposal influence your vote? AMazon's statement blamed it on local and state politicians. AOC had just taken a federal office after the decision, and frankly, is one out of 435 and really doesn't have much power on her own. I don't see why she keeps getting blamed for it. I don't see this as AOC's fault, but a NYC problem. The right people didn't get paid off.

Careful, you are starting to think like a Conservative! I thought conservative ideology was more to take from those they don't like to help those who don't need it. You can understand my confusion, considering how often they have tried exactly that. Yeah, I consider myself more what they used to call a blue dog democrat. I lean conservative - I have often been accused of having republican views. I am pro-choice, pro-birth control, and equal opportunity.
I think the Republicans are dabbling in a lot of behavior that disenfranchises voters of color or lower economic security. I do think their penchant for gerrymandering, voter id laws that are needlessly strict and limiting weekend voting, or not choosing to have voting days as national holidays, and sometimes even making polling places inconvenient for voters to get to, to discourage voting are disgusting. I think it is suspect that they refuse to take moves to ensure voter integrity and allow votes to be audited. We talked about election security when I was in HS, and I have been out of school for more than 35 years!
Great- In answer to your question on whether or not a candidates support of this proposal will influence my vote for president, is only somewhat. The president is not the ultimate decision maker, and congress is unlikely to pass a drastic Green New Deal. I care more about access to affordable healthcare and birth control and preserving the women's right to choose. I also am concerned about the environment, preservation of national parks, and equal opportunity for all races, marriage equality and Gay Rights. Trumps cabinet is disturbingly packed with questionable people and the Republican controlled congress confirmed them.
Like this guy: www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-jeffrey-epstein-sexual-abuse-acosta-20190222-story.html This was known and obvious when he was confirmed. He.should.never.have.been.confirmed!

I hate when people accuse democrats of only wanting free stuff. It is not a way to open a conversation - it is a way of shutting it down. I think Republicans do that a lot. They don't want to negotiate and agreement, they seem to want to cheat to get what the want - like's Trump's National Emergency - that is not an Emergency and subverts the will of the people (via congressional appropriation of the $$)

which is worse?
from my perspective, they have no moral podium to stand on.

I'm in agreement with most of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez's goals - global climate needs to worked on. And it needs to be global, if US & Canada clean up the carbon in our little corner of the world, that will have only a minor effect on the world, ie, if the other 90% of the world's people keep burning coal, the emerging nations will add carbon (coal plants) faster than we can convert our little corner to clean energy. So it has to be a solution that can be implemented by all peoples.
Note that the US uses fossil fuels for 63% of our power - and Canada uses fossil for only 17%. and note that Solar is only 1% in both countries. Yet both countries are spending inordinate amounts of money on solar (which is failing) - ie, a misguided priority. And it is our own fault - we elect only politicians that love solar.
A solution (being implemented by China) is modern mega nuclear power plants to replace all fossil plants. (a major element of AOC's plan. Part 2 - replace gasoline cars with electric cars (and recharge them with nuclear power). That fixes the two major sources of carbon pollution in the atmosphere (cars produce about 45% and power plants produce about 45%).
All of the other items on her list - cow farts, carbon tax, airplanes, are real but way less significant on a Pareto listing. So - fix the significant two - and then look at the insignificant many.
USA
Fossil fuels (total) 62.9% Nuclear 20.0% Renewables (total) 17.0% Hydropower 7.4% Wind 6.3% Solar 1.3%
CANADA
The primary sources of the total 648.2 TWH electricity generated in 2016 were hydro (62.4 percent), nuclear (15.5 percent), coal (9.45 percent), natural gas (6.8 percent), and other renewables e.g., wind, biomass, solar, etc. (5 percent, almost all wind), according to the Canadian National Energy Board (NEB).

I have seen her Twitter quotes and news video clips, her understanding of the math regarding the positive economic growth and jobs created for the state seems fuzzy.

I reject the New Green Deal in its entirety as the proposal is written. It goes way beyond global climate needs and/or changes for improvements into the future. I totally cringe at the thought of following FDR's Second Bill of Rights, which to me translates into a total big government takeover of the economy as we know it now. Anything that proposes a massive transformation of our society sounds like a Progressive dream.
highlights from the proposal: " This is a massive transformation of our society with clear goals and a timeline".
Economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work

Looks like other countries are doing something - earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/144540/china-and-india-lead-the-way-in-greeningThe world is literally a greener place than it was twenty years ago, and data from NASA satellites has revealed a counterintuitive source for much of this new foliage. A new study shows that China and India—the world’s most populous countries—are leading the increase in greening on land. The effect comes mostly from ambitious tree-planting programs in China and intensive agriculture in both countries.

I haven't heard anything she has said, but is it a foregone conclusion that massive payouts to bring in companies is net positive? My personal opinion is that Amazon has been a prick tease about this whole thing, and it sounds like they are now scraping the idea. They are just going to add jobs in places where they already have a significant structure. Seems like a good plan that maybe was in their hip pocket the whole time? They got dressed up like a whore, and then tried to see how much they could get a sugar daddy to spend on them, and after a bunch of men bought drinks and dinner, the best decision was to go home and get to work. I am unimpressed with how they handled it all.

I am unimpressed with how they handled it all. Amazon did get a bidding war on with several states competing to attract HQ, submitting proposals was voluntary by state and local officials who were elected by voters to represent their state and best interests. and yeah, there are winners and losers in this type of deal. Elected officials decided it was a good deal for NY, then later by what appeared to me was a delayed reaction by a group of local officials, residents, activists voiced opposition and Amazon decided it wasn't worth the fight and moved on to a more welcoming state. Amazon would have produced thousands of jobs, additional revenues, additional large companies would have been attracted to the area wanting to do business with Amazon. Additional development for housing, more small businesses, construction (jobs) etc For the local community it would likely result in an increase in rents and housing expenses, traffic and commuter congestion. The need to address public schools to accommodate additional families with children moving into the area, and more that would be needed to service an expanding local population. I personally wouldn't want the HQ in my backyard, but then I live in a zip code that doesn't even allow a gas station in my city. There are areas in my state that would work out well for the Amazon HQ imo and the additional jobs it would have been a positive.

I mentioned she played a part in Amazon deciding against NY. There is really no comparison to the state I live in to NY, there is a lot of open land waiting to be developed in my state, plenty of open space for an Amazon HQ and associated development that would be conveniently located to many amenities my state has to offer. It was decided long ago by city planners and zoning that land use would be limited to residential in my area. My area is landlocked and there is no space for new construction of any kind, we have houses that have been here for over a 100 years. eta... My elected state and local officials would have never submitted a proposal to Amazon to build a HQ in my neighborhood for the reasons above. The elected officials in NY seemed to think the HQ location was an appropiate location for the new HQ and associated development.

(emphasis added) Don't worry about those lost jobs and revenues too much... NY elected officials will continue to find ways to raise taxes on those 'tippy top' high income earners and paying their fair share.

Got it after thinking about this some more, according to AOC and her fear mongering it probably doesn't matter since the world is going to end in 12 years. www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2019/01/22/ocasio-cortez-climate-change-alarm/2642481002/The youngest woman ever elected to Congress again made headlines and sparked conservative criticism when she said Monday that she and other young Americans fear "the world is going to end in 12 years if we don't address climate change." Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., made the remark during an interview with writer Ta-Nehisi Coates at the MLK Now event in New York City celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

So if she had helped it not happen around you, you would praise her but since it was around other people who personally didn't want it around them you condemn her. Got it after thinking about this some more, according to AOC and her fear mongering it probably doesn't matter since the world is going to end in 12 years. ... So much for working to get term limits in place.

We are getting some sort of Amazon Distribution Center in my city. It is only 1-2 miles away. They are adding lanes to freeway, went from 3 lane onramp to 4. Same with off ramp. My last house, this 4 story building would have been in my backyard. Still, I am very concerned about increased traffic and the type of workers may bring crime, my house value may go down. I get why residents of AOC’s district might not want Amazon.
