DS spent 2 summers there and said it was nice! When he was looking for a job after college he considered some jobs there and in Chicago area. So after living where the most snow he ever saw was less than an inch he thought he could handle it.
He ended up in DC area for 3 years and Phoenix now.

Congrats! I'm not sure how Michigan even got as high as 2nd place. They must include the UP-- where no one lives. (Ok, a few people live there, but not many.) I guess the Red Wings are really sucking lately? But North Dakota is less shitty? Really? I live in MN on the ND border and have spent a lot of time in ND. The eastern 1/3 of ND is similar to MN, but in the other 2/3's of the state isn't nearly as bad.... they tend to get warm ups in the winter that we never see here and since they are so open country, they also melt a lot quicker in the spring (and sometimes in the winter) Last year (can't say last winter because "spring" had been here for 4 weeks) we were driving pickups on the lakes until about April 20th. I must admit we don't get as much snow as many states, but the snow we get stays all winter and just keeps piling up.

On of my coworkers was in shock when I told him I had never shoveled snow in my 50+ years. I have only ever lived in South Florida, South Georgia and now Central Alabama. If we do get even a Little bit here I am going to get my shovel and take a picture.

NY is #20!? WTF? I’d protest but I’m too Fucking cold, I can’t move after my last fall on the ice, and I’m too busy preparing for another blizzard on Tuesday. Fuckers. Hmmm - when I moved from Minneapolis to Buffalo, I thought I was in the tropics. Heck, it only got down to five below or there abouts during the five years I was in Buffalo. One of my most significant Buffalo memories was waiting for the crew plowing the parking lot at work to dig out my car that was buried in snow up to the windshield. Bucket loaders are the bomb! The Buffalo standard was you closed the plant and sent everyone home when the snow was so heavy that the Plant Manager couldn’t see the flag pole 25 feet from their office window.

When I moved from the Atlanta area to Chicago, my neighbor, a former Chicago resident, took great glee in presenting me with one of his snow shovels. It was a good one. Been over 30 years since the gift. I last used it yesterday.

I've never shoveled snow in 75 years and have only driven in it once but only because didn't realize how fast it was coming down and needed to get financials to one of our clients. Took me 45 minutes to get home instead of the 15. But everyone started to close down about the same time!! I think we got two or three inches that time back in the 90's. Snow on the Gulf Coast is rare.

In Minnesota anything under 6 inches is barely a snow event and typically won't result in schools being closed. Maybe 2 hour late start. Yesterday we got I think a little over 3 inches. Didn't effect my day at all. Still ran errands and hit up the grocery store. However, the snow has piled up so much that It's taller than my mailbox and I only have a path exactly as wide as my car at the bottom of my driveway. One of my employees is going to swing by with a skidsteer tomorrow and fix my driveway and dig out my mailbox. He brought one home from work for the winter and he only lives a couple of miles from me so he'll throw it on a trailer and swing by my house. I'm too cheap to buy a snow blower so we just shovel by hand. About once a season one of my employees will run the skiddy up my driveway to clear it off good.
I could keep one of the bobcats from work in my garage but then I'd have to clear out my garage and it's currently full of home renovation stuff so that's not happening.

I gather Canadian cities weren't in this competition.

I must admit we don't get as much snow as many states, but the snow we get stays all winter and just keeps piling up. I wasn't comparing North Dakota to Minnesota, but to #2 Michigan, where I live. Whereas MPL was talking about -50 temps, and others talking about -30 and -20, I was talking -6. It's definitely milder here, so these guys making this stuff up in the bar don't make much sense. There's a lot of other states with a lot of slush in the winter, so I think they're a little too hard on MI in this list. For instance, I drove normal speed--about 77--home from work today, and I've never had snow tires. There's little snow on the ground. Granted, it's been a really shitty few weeks, but so has a lot of other places.

That also shows how arbitrary their criteria are, because I absolutely despise wind. Plus, believe it or not, my husband hates the sun in the winter. He's prone to headaches/migraines, and the angle of the sun in the winter is much more aggravating as it gets right in your eyes. It's really bright on the snow, too, if there is any. Well, to be fair, it really sounds like it was just a bunch of guy in a bar throwing together a list over some beers.
It's the last bit that put Minnesota in the #1 place. Our sports teams are not that good. It's not just the cold although it definitely gets cold here.

I've always said it's a given I'm going to hell when I die but not the burning fire hell. I'll be sent to Bismarck, ND in the winter time as punishment.
Do I need to change that to Minnesota?? Yes. Embarrass, Minnesota

I don't know about that. At least not in my area. The kids here have had 6 snow days in the past 3 weeks (well three were cold days), and I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow makes it 7.

I don't remember the two winters that I spent in Minnesota as being that bad, but that probably has a lot to do with the winter camping and hiking that I did a few years prior to moving there.
Winter camping taught me to stay dry, eat constantly, stay hydrated, and to stay moving. It also taught me to appreciate good winter gear and to actually use it as intended and to make up for the lack of good winter gear with anything that was available. Watching a student that was born and raised in Minnesota don and doff winter gear was also quite instructive. When the skinny kid that wears shorts in 20 degree weather puts a newspaper down the front of their jacket, zips both zips, snaps all of their snaps, and puts on a scarf, a hat, and mittens before stepping outside, you know to do the same. Watching them doff clothes was also helpful. Once inside, they were pretty fixated on getting anything that was damp as dry as possible as soon as possible. I saw a lot of scarves and hats and snow pants carefully placed for maximum drying. I also saw a lot of people lose their boots in order to dry their socks and I saw a lot of dry socks coming out of backpacks.
People don't adopt these habits to stay comfortable. They adopt these habits because they understand hypothermia and frostbite. Staying more comfortable is just a bonus.

Only reason we were two hours late today was because it was a pre-scheduled 2nd Tuesday of every month two hour late start. We've had a number of weather days this year but most were due to cold. I think we've had 5 in the past three weeks and 3 were for the polar vortex and 2 were for snow. All the smaller towns around me were out but they get more drifting snow than we do.

we are right at the point of the V of the Minnesota River. Weather is weird because of that. 10 miles south they will get bombed with snow and we'll get a dusting. It was done snowing here by the time I woke up at 6:30. It's blowing now and people are complaining that the roads are getting squirrelly. I may head out early but that's mostly because it's fairly quiet here today and I have to drop some contracts off at my city administrators office (I work in the "big" town but live in the small one 10 miles up the road).

Judging by the tags I see at this time of year, a good half of Michigan's population is in Alabama.

I got one of those “happy lights” for my desk. I can go weeks without seeing sun.

It was $35 on Amazon. Get at least 10,000 lumens. It seems to work
