As much as I like tuna and egg salad sandwiches, don't pack one of those two to eat on the plane once up in the air. Some folks begin to feel nauseous if they smell those foods and while stuck in a confined space with no escape. Strong smelling food like food containing a good amount of garlic can make people feel a bit woozy too.
Eat them before you board the plane if you plan on bringing a sandwich.

Ok, so what to wear on the flight? I was thinking jeans and either a quarter zip under armour sweatshirt or a zipped up hoodie, but it sounds like either of those might be a pain for security? I'm leaving my winter coat here (hence DH driving and picking me up). Probably bring my light jacket. Taking off the hoodie is not a big deal for security. The shoes are the bigger PITA. Wear slip ons if at all possible. If you're wearing a metal watch or jewellery slip them into your purse before you get to security. Remember about necklaces and belts.

I’d layer, putting a t shirt underneath your sweatshirt so you can take it off when you get to your destination. Wearing shoes with ties is no big deal, there is usually a bench nearby where you can sit down and tie them.

My flight to Chicago in December I wore boots with a zipper. I’ve also worn slip on bootie-style boots. They’re both pretty easy to deal with. Tie shoes aren’t that big a deal either. The trick is to untie them completely when you take them off. And wear dark colored socks. It’s easier not to think about what you’re walking on if you can’t see it.

Wear clothes that you wouldn't be embarrassed to wear to your work meeting in case your luggage never arrives.
Bring snacks such as Cliff or Luna bars. A Chef salad in a disposable bowl and a plastic fork is good if you don't want a sandwich.
Most airports have charging stations for your phone or tablet/laptop.

Ugh! What is going to happen if my personal item is larger than the size allowed? My work backpack is 2 inches too wide. I can take the height (an inch too tall, but I can't do anything about th e width and I don't have a narrower backpack in the house?

Do not send your purse through security scanner until just before you go through the X-ray thing. I keep an eye on my stuff and they make you put your back to the conveyor belt so your valuables are out of your sight.

My guess is that as long as the backpack fits under the seat, they don’t care.

It turns out the flight out of my town, carry on suit cases end up being gate checked because of lack of room.
Security here was great. Super helpful and happy. Next stop O'hare. 🤤

Next stop O'hare. 🤤 I can't tell you how many times that has happened to me at CID and DBQ. However, I don't plan on it. Security at small airports is another reason I enjoy flying out of them. People are not so pushy and hyper about it because there may be a handful of people if there is a line. Glad you are out of here as it hasn't started snowing here yet. Safe travels to Phoenix.

Got out of CID just as it started snowing. I'm hopeful I can get out of O'hare the same, but the snow is nearby. I've got another hour until boarding. Keep your fingers crossed.

O’Hare is usually pretty good about getting out in the snow, especially if it just started snowing. You might be delayed so they can deice you though.

They won't kick you off the plane for that (unless you keep peeling too long of course)
