DD's name was a compromise. Her Dad wanted to name her Hortensia and I said no way, not happening. Her name is somewhat common in Hispanic cultures but with a slightly different pronunciation is more of an older ladies name. Her middle name is incredibly common, with an 8 letter first name I wanted her to have a short middle name.

Family names through and through, I am of Czechoslovakian descent on both sides (100%) and my generation became somewhat fanatical about using family names for our kids. DD1 - First name is a version of my paternal grandmother's name (Magdalene) - middle name is my paternal great-grandmother's name. My middle name is also a version of this.

Sophia the First. Sorry, guess it's a tv show, not a movie. Sofia the First came out in 2012. Sophia the name cracked the top 20 girls names in 2003, and by 2011 was the most popular name for girls in the US.

DS is named after my beloved Grandma and Father. DD is named after my middle name and her middle name we both hate. If she changes her last name, she’s dropping her middle forever. I told her just to shorten it. The short version doesn’t make her sound like a bimbo.

I like the Foreman approach. Name them all George.
Boys or girls, it doesn’t matter. George.
Or, like the DW’s family. At least five consecutive generations of Thomas. And Mary’s. Mary’s by the dozen.
Or even, as was suggested for DW’s family of six kids, name all the male grandchildren Michael and all the female grandchildren Hannah. This prevents hurt feelings that would result when Grammy or Grampy calls one of the grandkids by the wrong name.

We wanted our kids to have a name from Mythology and something with my Russian heritage. I didn't want either name to be something that was an obvious name to be made fun of either. My honest thought wrong or right was that everyone would know DH's heritage by looking at them I wanted them to have a name with mine.
Oldest was names after Goddess Selene and pretty common Russian middle name. The Youngest was named Zaria which covered both goals, or at least close enough to a Russian name for me, it is Slavic. Her middle name combined my DH's mom and my aunt's middle names to make Annmaria. If YDD had been a boy, I agreed with DH that we could do Ares, so he could strand at the bottom of the steps and yell it when he wanted the kids to show. It was to common of a known god for me to have it as a first name.
For the daughters is works out nice because ODD is named after the moon goddess, and YDD is named after the morning star goddess.

A good friend of mine (30 years ago)put a lot of thought into picking a name for her daughter from Greek mythology. But she was not aware of a lot of Disney movies. And she hated when people would say “Ariel, like the Little Mermaid”

DD1 - First name is a version of my paternal grandmother's name (Magdalene) - middle name is my paternal great-grandmother's name. Her first name was meant to be unique...except that it's the same as Swamp's daughter and for whatever reason that name EXPLODED 25+ years ago and she ended up with about 4 other girls in her class with a variant of that name. Ugh. I should have reversed them - her middle name has not been popular since the late 1800's. DD2 First name is my maternal great-grandmother's name (which has STILL not been picked up for use, it's VERY unique) and middle name is ex's maternal great-grandmother's middle name, her first name was Vera and I preferred her middle name of Irene to that. If either had turned out to be a boy, his name would have been Henry Grayson - which is a version of my paternal grandfather's middle name and ex's paternal grandfather's name. Both of those names have become really popular lately, but my girls are both in their 20's so had either been a boy, they would have been trendsetters! I hear you in the Madeline popularity. I thought it was mildly unique but not weird. Was I ever wrong. There were 3 Maddie’s in her kindergarten class of 10. There is always another Maddie in whatever she does. Dance, school, figure skating, soccer, basketball, theater.

Went to daycare three months later and there was another Sophia. Didn't realize the extent of the 'problem' until she was a little older and we started visiting playgrounds. Anecdote: when at the playground with my toddler I said her name and a man with his toddler asked if it was spelled with an f or a ph. I said "ph". He got this slightly superior look on his face and said "well my daughter's is spelled with an f". He looked a little sour when I replied "yeah, so is that one over there".

My DS is not named for anyone. I was certain I was having a girl and never did pick out a boys name. Then when he was born we couldn’t agree on a name so we took him home as “no name”. XH and I finally agreed on Dennis as his first name with XH’s first name as DS’s middle name. It got a little confusing when I married 2nd H who has a brother named Dennis. My grandpa's name is Dennis. Then he had a son named Dennis who also had a son named Dennis. So they went by grandpa, Denny, and Little Denny.

DS 1 has the same name as DH. There is someone named this in every generation on that side - though they all have different middle names. I got to pick the middle name. I like it better than the first name. DS 2 has a name that is similar to my deceased father. I didn't want to give him the same name, as there is no one under the age of 65 with my dad's name. I got to pick both names that time.
If we had had girls, they would have been Liliana and Zariah.

The Boy's name is Stephen Andrew. He's named after my dad (Steve) and my husband's later father, Andrew was his middle name. We'd have named him completely after his dad but he'd share the same name with my husband's half brother who was a career criminal and we didn't want to screw the kid into ever being confused with his Uncle.
We tell people he's named after "King, Hawking and R (my maiden name) in no particular order" but honestly he's named after my dad. Dad has always gone by Steve and my son has always gone by Stephen. It's not actually as confusing as you'd think- except on the times my mom goes to call my dad "Stephen" when she's frustrated with him and my son will say "yeah Nana?" and she's have to be- "sorry, I meant your Papa"
We've asked if he wants to go by Steve now that he's an adult and he claims he prefers Stephen.

My niece named her daughter my Grandmother's name. It was the third most "old-ladiest" name I could ever think of. I know those names are back. And I think there are several super cute nick names, but she is adamant that we have to use the entire name.
I'm a short name kind of person - give me one syllable all day, every day.

Our rule was that the girls names had to be short. My dH’s last name is three separate words and so we wanted them to have short first names to balance it, lol.

One of my cousin's and his wife named their daughter Le. Spelled with 2 letters. Her last name has 3 letters. She said she knew how to write her name when she was very young not only because of it being 5 letters, but all 5 letters are easy to make for a kid.
