Who here has one and does it make you much money? Care to share what it is?
I'm looking at dog walking. If I could get something fairly steady during my lunch breaks I'd kill 2 birds so to speak. I'm curious if selling courses on sites like Udemy ever works out. However my only real skill pertains to my day job and I'd have to get it cleared with them. Somehow I see myself signing up for more work and not actually earning any side income.
My passive income that is supposed to be paying for my degree and saving for the kids college is tiny again this year and not likely to be much better very soon. I'm trying to come up with other options given existing time constraints.

For my side gig, I contract with a company that provides proofreading services, mostly to Ivy League university hospitals. I get paid $40-$75/hr depending on who the client is and how much proofing they want done. It's very hit or miss; sometimes it's 15 hours in 1 week and other times nothing for a couple months. Right now the only work order I have is for 28 hours spread out over about 2.5 months. I'd like to find other proofing jobs to give me a steady 20-30 hours/month of side income.

I've seen proof reading on pinterest a lot. It isn't one I could do, but I'm so tempted by the online classes just so I could get better at my own writing. How do you find your clients? Do you use a service that takes a % of the fee? That is what I'm looking at doing if I try for the dog walking gig. I don't want to spend a lot of time finding clients.

That's the one I'm looking at! I tried to talk dh into pet sitting together, but he says he's too invested in other peoples animals with his regular job he can't do that with anything else. Without dh to help out I don't know how much dog/house sitting I want to do, but in the summer I might feel differently.

You initially mentioned walking dogs. Maybe that would be a better fit?

I make roughly $100/month as a council person in my town. I don't recommend it; more work than pay. Lol. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My aunt does occasionally dog sit or walk via Rover. She does it very sporadically since she travels a lot for work (and why doesn't have her own puppers).

The company I contract for finds the clients, so I don't do any of that part. They do multiple things for the clients besides proofing, so these tend to be ongoing jobs. I have no idea what their percentage is. I'm the only part-timer, so I'm thrilled I even get a small part of the work for my extra fun money.

As a former print journalist/editor (MSJ in Print Journalism) I would LOVE to find a side hustle like that flutterby ! Whenever I google it in France or the UK, all I find are websites where copyeditors/proofreaders have to compete for clients by charging a ridiculously low rate. There are similar sites for private tutors (since I teach now). I refuse to go for those sites. Any suggestions as to what I might look into/google to find something comparable to what YOU do here in Europe?
Please feel free to send me a PM if you prefer. I would greatly appreciate any advice. I found out last week that I have probably lost another 30 teaching hours this semester (nobody's fault, she says diplomatically) so I'm trying to make up the lost income for this semester, as well as find a long-term side-hustle that suits me.

Rental houses, they are all profitable, but we have been sinking the money in one a year remodeling them. This year is the last to remodel, then we can use the profits. We are paying all the bills from them and dumping the profits back in. It will really boost our standard of living bck up to where it was before hubs retired. It will be nice.

Alteration and mending. It's amazing how many people can't do that anymore. And what a pair of pants will cost to have hemmed!

That's genius. I may have to borrow that someday, if you don't mind. I'm a hand sewer. DH uses my machine more than I do, and at that it's mostly to sew on scouting patches.

I charge between $2.50 and $10 per foot. I machine sew the back and always hand sew the front. I'll hand sew both sides, hence the $10 foot if there is scallops or prairie points. And I really enjoy doing it. It's relaxing.

While I rarely have to hem things as I'm usually too tall, back when I was making my own stuff out of already made stuff I will say it was a pain in the ass to do it all solo. Very much a pin 4 times before it's the length I want and even. I need to buy stuff to check them out but I think eshataki might become a large portion of my wardrobe. They hem and alter for you!

I read somewhere once that an enterprising college kid was making a bunch of money cleaning dog poop out of yards! I think it may have been $10/week...but you multiply that out and it becomes good money!

My friend hems and mends as a side hustle! Very true, not many people know how to do that these days.
She did the curtains when we redid DS2's bedroom. She just took in two pairs of dress pants for me.
She loves to sew. She charges her friends "mates' rates" so we get a good deal and she earns extra money. Win win!

Have you considered doing translation work?Yes Peace Of Mind . Frankly I HATE translating. In fact that's DH's side hustle, but I help him with it when I can. I haven't had much free time for a while, but because of a perfect storm, I don't have enough hours this semester. DH is expecting a huge translation. If it comes through, I will definitely be helping him with it. I also just started doing DH's books. That's been a SUPER steep learning curve for me. DH needed me to do it, and the theory was that that would allow me to give up 3 classes/year. In the end I lost 4 classes just this semester, so now I need to make up that income. ETA: I don't want to jinx myself ... it's LOOKS like I lost 4 classes this semester, but I will only know about the two "lost" summer term classes on Friday. I'm hoping I may still be offered those hours, or at least some of them.

I give standardized tests like the ACT and SAT. Dh's health had made me reluctant to commit to anything, but he has been doing well. I told my grade -level principal that I was retiring so think about me for this gig again. He shot back asking if I was available this weekend. That works.

My side gig is working for my prior employers in my free time. Granted, it's during the typical "busy" season and maybe a little after "busy" season; however, it works for me. During busy season, I'll max one at 10 hours a week while the other will be flexible. Last year, I didn't max the one at 10 hours a week and the other was more involved than expected. For a couple of weeks, I worked everyday and I was burnt out in the end. I'm not making the same mistake this year.

Ironically I logged into Facebook over lunch - and someone just asked on our community page if anybody scooped up dog poop - and a bunch of people chimed in that they'd pay money to have someone come do that!

I'm officially signed up with Rover. I set my availability for dog walking once a day every day and multiple check ins on my weekday off. The kids seemed pretty excited about it and wanted to help so I might increase weekend availability and give them a cut since they'd have to tag along and could potentially help me out.

I think it may have been $10/week...but you multiply that out and it becomes good money! I'm sure there are businesses that do just that. Paris had such poop problem from people not cleaning up after their chiens that the city deployed a whole squadron of official motorized poop-vacuum scooter thingies. I recall reading an article a few years ago about people in the US who had started poop-cleaning businesses. If I had a dog, I would definitely employ such a service.
