It's always the poor who get screwed. And here we go again. The article is short, and most of it focuses on a few such workers. But, god damn it! These people just simply can't afford this, and you can't expect someone who makes 400- 600 week to have a robust "emergency fund". Is that why it was a good idea that the Democrats held firm, stuck together, and didn't give an inch on this ? Giving Pelosi her 'win' over Trump ?

The dems sent 7 bills to Congress that Trumps toady McConnell wouldn't let them discuss.
You mean giving the American people a win over Trump.

Why should democrats give an inch? He promised that MEXICO would pay for the wall. Over and over and over again. Now he wants the American taxpayers to foot the bill.
There is no inch to give.

Is that why it was a good idea that the Democrats held firm, stuck together, and didn't give an inch on this ? Giving Pelosi her 'win' over Trump ? It wasn't the Democrats who did this, and you know it. Let';s see, what was the quote from our great leader? Oh yes, " I will be proud to own this shut down!". So there was only one side to this ? I could of sworn that I seen on the news that the Democrats holding firm, was the reason that they 'won' this. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2018/12/21/it-looks-like-democrats-will-hold-firm-now-then-what-happens/

Yes while they held firm for the American public many Republicans hid, afraid of their leader.

Thank you Blond Granny, I don't know what happened to it the first time! Mistakes understandably happen. Even ones by omission.

Yes while they held firm for the American public many Republicans hid, afraid of their leader. Did that American public include the 800,000 not getting paid, and the peripheral employees. That kind of holding firm, so the Pelosi can beat Trump ? 2 days ago · Pelosi demurred when asked whether the shutdown had been a test between herself and Trump. “I don’t see this as any power play,” she told reporters Friday. But actually, it unmistakably was a contest between Washington’s two power centers, each gauging the other’s tenacity and smarts.apnews.com/ddc34fcf9dd146ed9557be7c510ae13e

Not to beat Trump. But yes IMO (because I can't interview each of them) they blame the one person who had power to keep the government open to negotiate (as the house was doing) or shut it down.
Tell me how Pelosi shut down the government. And don't say all she needed to do was give him his wall.

What the heck is a "large swaths of airports were shut down"? What constitutes a swath? Do you mean one lane of security checkpoints in some airports? Or one plane landing at a small airport which is closed at night because their are no scheduled flights coming or going?

The Democrats don't have the power to shut down the government. The POTUS does. Why couldn't he just keep negotiating instead of shut down? Because he thought he'd get his way. He did not and the American people are paying for his antics. He rolled the dice and lost and now hundreds of thousands of people are affected.

Would you feel the same way if tables were turned? Is this really how we want the country run? If you can't get your way, make everyone suffer until you do?

The people running the food stands, concession stands, etc,. made no money. They won't be getting any back pay.

They obviously did not have a clear majority either when they held the majority.

Shame on the lowest paid for not having at least six months of savings to see them through the shutdown. Shame on them. Shame.

The last sentence of that link haunts me.
Here is an extended extract, with the relevant sentence bolded.
Loniece Hamilton, 25, another Smithsonian guard, said she watched about $1,000 disappear from her bank account during the budget stalemate. She’d started her job in May, figuring a government-tied position would be more stable.
“I thought it’d be better,” she said.
She borrowed money from her grandfather and cousin. She didn’t drive unless she was taking her 5-year-old son to school. And when he asked for his favorite cookies and juice at the store, she said: Next month.
“I’m late on all of my bills,” she said. “Every single last one of them.”
Catching up, she estimates, could take two months.
I suspect that she is being wildly over-optimistic regarding how much she has been set back or that she is referring only to how long it will take to get the overdue items back in good standing. I have serious doubts that she will be able to repay the relatives that she has borrowed money from in that short of a period, or to rebuild her savings back to pre-shutdown levels in anything like two months.
There was a time when I was living paycheck to paycheck when I actually calculated how much I could save if I paid only the minimum on my debts, bought only what I needed, and everything went right for a whole year. It would have taken me an entire year to save a grand.
I suspect that many of the folks quoted in that article are being brave and optimistic and really haven't a clue as to how badly they have been hurt by this shutdown.

I takes two to make a stalemate You can say Pelosi was doing it for the people. I can say Trump was doing it for the people. We're both correct.

I don't see how both sides can be blamed when there was a bill passed that would have meant the government never would have shut down and trump changed his mind.

You would have been dealing with state employees not federal. The ones I've dealt with in NJ in the past have ranged from good to indifferent. I'm not sure how what you feel about your state's past employees handling unemployment should impact your feelings about federal employees and federal contractors, but I guess I don't think state == federal, so perhaps that's the difference. I feel for people who are not being paid due to no fault of their own. My compassion isn't limited to just non government workers. I can feel sad for the retail workers with recently cut hours and federal contractors, workers at the same time.
