From the link
The departments of Agriculture, Justice, Treasury, Commerce, Interior, State, Transportation, Homeland Security, and Housing and Urban Development as well as agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration and the Internal Revenue Service are all hit by the partial shutdown.
Tax filing season: The extended lapse comes at a particularly awkward time for the IRS, which will likely have to redo its shutdown plan this week to prepare for the upcoming filing season — the first in which both taxpayers and the agency will need to navigate the changes from the tax law Republicans enacted a year ago. Top agency officials predicted even before the shutdown started that the start of the filing season could slip into February, after starting in mid-to-late January in recent years.
FAA training: The union that represents air traffic controllers complained this week that delays at the Federal Aviation Administration’s training academy are about to exacerbate the yearslong backlog in bringing on new hires in a field that is already plagued with staffing shortages.
"Staffing shortages" of air traffic controllers... Hmmmm. What could possibly go wrong?

THIS ARTICLE explains the problem with air traffic controllers. If they seen this coming, why is it suddenly NOW that it is critical?? Really,, they were not expecting people to retire??

Note the part that says "to exacerbate the yearslong backlog in bringing on new hires in a field that is already plagued with staffing shortages. " The shutdown is just aggravating a pre-existing problem. I'm betting there are lots pre-existing problems that are getting aggravated/

It's a very stressful job, even though they work limited hours due to that, often called on to work beyond that when conditions demand that..storms ...weather ...etc.. One of the reason in 89 they walked off the job...Reagon fired all who did not report back with in his time limits...union head made a mistake there...was fired by his union... we lucked out there in not having any air accidents due to inexperience..I became friends with a AC from military...believe Army….sent to Bradley to work...Young guy...asked him over some beers if he was as qualified as the ones fired...said no, ok for a Bradley but not for one of the major airports...New York, Atlanta, Chicago etc...need years of experience …When his military time was done, another year or so, was going to work civilien side...more % naturally. As far as salaries , found a site on average salaries will post below...remember...very stressful work...not run of the mill employment ------------------------------------------------------ www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Air_Traffic_Controller/Salary

not to complicate the discussion, but the US is facing a critical shortage of TRADESPEOPLE, as well. unions used to provide training for the trades, but as unions have faded, so have trade schools. the result is that other than training in house (tougher than it sounds) we have little choice other than offshoring for services (the ones we can offshore for).

Why did you pick ITT Tech to, I assume, indicate that schools that teach the 'trades' are closing but there are plenty of students?? ITT Tech lost it's accreditation and I believe was rather "predatory" in it's practices. I think there are lawsuits pending. It couldn't deliver what it promised it's students and left it's students with huge student debt and no degree or a degree that is worthless (as in employers do NOT want students from ITT Tech). here's the skinny on ITT Tech: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITT_Technical_Institute

They also took the trades out of high schools...which was where many got their starts.
I know there is a shortage of welders in many areas...and just look at "who" is working in construction now!

With the cost of semi prestigious schools reaching $40,000 plus PER YEAR..[sad]….State Schools...university's…@$28,000per year and up......and even community colleges with students living at home or possible group sharing lodges very pricy....trade schools are not a bad choice ...Armed forces too...have a good friend where her grand kids, male, female both in or entering the Air Force...learn a trade plus education benefits for afterwards... Example of: whitney.cttech.org/index.html

Back in the day ...trades in my high school...offered....metal shop, electoral and wood working.... 1/2 semester in two disciplines...I ended up in electrical and metal work...made a long fork...and learned real, real basic electricity stuff...soldering stuff I remember but none would have prepared me for a trade...Now there is a trade school in town..9/12 grade..I posted a link above..."eli whitney"….600 students from many towns...very nice building...

So he's apparently keeping the government shut down to avoid "looking foolish". Never mind the people who needs paychecks that aren't coming, just so long as he looks good to his supporters. flip.it/aA.smEOh, and Pelosi isn't a good Catholic since she is opposed to the wall.

With the condition they're reporting they are in, not sure why anyone is going to the national parks!

Trump is also claiming the Dems are keeping this shut down going because they want to use this against him in the 2020 election.
You know - if Trump hadn't started this shut down, it couldn't be used against him.
You can't bitch about something you yourself created.

With the condition they're reporting they are in, not sure why anyone is going to the national parks! Probably because they can get in free (lost revenue) and they think the parks will be less crowded. Problem is, if someone gets hurt or lost, the usual means of help aren't there.

If I had to make some kind of career change suddenly, I would go into plumbing or HVAC (or maybe mechanics). I wouldn't want to do electrical or welding as they are both quite dangerous. Not many women work in trades because of the physically demanding labor, and I think we are missing out. The community colleges in my city have trades programs that will certify you after 6 months or a year, and the starting wages are very good in my area. Quickest way to a new good paying career!

Our local tech school has a terrific welding program. our local JC just gutted their welding program, unfortunately. there IS NO local tech school where i live. i am worried about my future, as an employer of half a dozen weldors.

Yes, most of the tech schools have trades....BUT, the kids used to get a start in high school that they didn't have to pay for. If they didn't like the classes they took, they could try others to find one they did like...but it also gave many an idea of how to do home repairs rather than having to hire someone to do it.
My home room in high school was the auto mechanics room. So even some girls got exposed to parts of engines, etc. My Dad made sure I was able to do minor engine repairs & change a tire (with a tube).

Just so we're clear: "They" was W and his NCLB mandates. While I understand his intent with NCLB, the effect was a pendulum swing to public schools only being allowed to teach reading, writing, and math due to the time constraints. "Schools" didn't voluntarily take vocational education, home economics, etc. out of the curriculum. We get bashed for not teaching enough, teaching too much which means no one learns anything, etc. etc. etc. We just teach what the governments mandate us to teach.

Oh, and now that some of the restrictions are freeing up and money is being funded specifically for CTE programs, DH is building a new facility for his alternative school and including a tech center for it with several vocational departments in it.
That type of development is happening in several districts in our state.
The pendulum is swinging back the other way.

And...I'm really p-o-ed about this shut down still happening. The national park in this part of our state has literal poop all over the only road that leads up to the visitor buildings. Why are people doing that?
