It is cool here today and I started to garden until I saw a 2 ft snake. Cannot deal. You could have bugs and spiders crawling all over me and I wouldn't flinch. One look at that snake and I am inside totally not wanting to touch my gardens. " src="http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/angry2.png">

plugginaway22 Snakes are the reason I first started hiring my lawn mowed way back in the years when I could easily do it. I can't handle them. Here, I live in denial that there are any--even though my sister sees them on her farm. debthaven I'm happy QB support has been able to help you when you have issues. I know you don't have an accounting background. Even with one, I sometimes ran in to issues. Every year, I had to look up how to print the contribution letters for the church members.s That's not really an accounting issue but the software would give them the date and amount for each contribution. The person before me kept track of donations on this huge spreadsheet, so it always had errors. I got donations in to church accounting software immediately. Then there would only be errors if I made a data entry error and it was easy to find. Not easy to find in a huge spreadsheet that I didn't use.

So glad you're going back to Maine finnime ! Have a great time! OMG plugginaway22 , me neither! One Christmas my Australian friend, her DH, their 3 kids and small dog were at her MIL's house in the bush. There was a very poisonous snake on the patio. They called the FD, but since they were in the bush, the FD refused to come out on Christmas Day. They all had to spend the day locked up inside (remember, it's summer there in Dec) until the FD showed up early the next day. We saw a rattlesnake in AZ on our first trip out west, at a ranch, on horseback. Thankfully that's my only experience with snakes.

Haven't heard from DN3 this week about moving some boxes for me. I'm guessing he has his hands full. The street where he lives has flooded two different nights. His house sets up high and my sister said his car is fine but part of his yard was flooded.
That street was running like a river last night but they got 6 inches of rain in about 3 hours.
As he says, his house has been there since 1856 and it will be there for many more years. Yes, 1856, before Iowa was a state.

TheO this is for DH's taxes.
The good news is, today was the first time I've had to call QB in 9 months! DH offered to pay his former bookkeeper to help me out. I said, wow, great, I'd love that! I didn't know S knows QBs! He said, S doesn't, not at all, but you can figure it out together! So I told DH, thanks but no thanks. Save your money, I'll figure it out with the helpline. And I did!!! I'm sure you'll hear from your DN3 soon. Your DNs are always so attentive. ETA: I have to admit I am SO PROUD of myself for figuring it out (with the aid of the QB helpline of course).

TheO, another thought ... Now that there's less in the basement, if ever your DNs are not available for a stretch, maybe you can keep a couple of empty boxes so you can transfer some of the contents of the basement boxes, and bring them up yourself? Just a thought, so you can keep making progress in the meantime.

I have done some of that and will do more if I have to. I still need to get the books ready to donate. I want to take them to the city Goodwill site because they will unload the car for me.
The boxes in the basement were way over packed and much too heavy.

I dropped off the dogs for a week in the country with my parents since I have an intensive event to work at this week. It’s so quiet at home without them!
I finished quilting my second quilt today and need to tidy up a few strings and then photograph it. I am working on the other projects and deciding if I want another science quilt or rainbow quilt next.
Without open houses this weekend I can hopefully get some painting done and work on the yard rehab. The backyard grass is thriving and the front yard is still dead!

DN3 came over and we brought up boxes from the basement. He's added being the assistant director in a play at the local theater company so he is driving past my house 6 days a week. I think keeping busy is good for him. He has broken up with his girlfriend. Said he has too many issues still from the concussion and he can't give his all to a job, coaching, a play and a relationship. She had stood by him and he said she would still stand by him if he would let her. He's trying to figure out an efficient way to mark papers debthaven. His are math but he likes to look at the work to see where they went wrong.

Just got home from the party I didn't want to go to. They asked DH's band to play but I didn't know the hosts so I didn't want to go. Another "band wife" who is a good friend said you're being silly, you'll know most of the people there, they throw great parties, you'll have a great time. She was right. Theo I know NOTHING about marking math tests but this is my advice for your nephew: - print out the empty test - print out the answers - mark one page at a time The third is a HUGE HUGE HUGE time saver, a trick another teacher taught me. Your mind "memorizes" the answers and it's MUCH quicker than doing an entire paper (with several sections) at a time. Of course I don't mark math papers, but my papers have three parts: grammar/vocab/essay. The essays are the longest to mark so I prefer to start with those to get them over with. Then I do either grammar or vocab, both of which are much easier. So I'd encourage your DH to start with the hardest part. It is MUCH quicker to mark one page at a time than to mark entire exams one after the other. The other thing I do to gain time is when I finish a part, I turn the pages to the next part so I'm all set to go the next day. I realize this probably sounds somewhat robotic but it truly is a big timesaver. Also, IMO your DN should go over the corrections in class. I do that for Grammar and Vocab but obviously can't do it for the essays. But he should be able to do it for Math.
If he can, it would save him having to write out the corrections on each paper. That will take him hours!!! He could include a "correct" version of the test to hand back if he has enough photocopies. If he doesn't have enough photocopies, he can project the "correct" test on the board.
I think it's REALLY important to go over exams in class. Believe it or not most of the teachers I work with "don't have time" for that. I consider that a GREAT disservice to the students, I ALWAYS make time for that. We are all UK/US/Canadian but some of us are "speedier" than others. You can probably guess that I'm pretty "speedy" LOL. So I ALWAYS find time for whatever I think is important, whether it be correcting an exam or a TED talk.
Last thing, graphically, to tighten up the exam paper and marking grid so there are fewer pages for both. I don't know how to do that but happily several of my colleagues do, so they do it for first year and second year, and I use their templates for my MSc finals.
Last last thing, to work with another teacher who teaches the same subject, if he can. They can share exams, proofread each other's work, maybe one is better at layout than the other.
Hope this helps.

Pictures of the quilt are here: imgur.com/LiouppTBack here: imgur.com/DUombnJFor some reason I can't embed them here but it's about 800 hexagons. I made a short video that I'll share tomorrow on Instagram identifying all the "ologies" in the quilt. They're all from a podcast called Ologies which I really love.

I got rid of 3 old batteries, hubs loaded the tires on the small trailer, they are big like semi tires from my motorhome. I got rid of all of it. Yes! I did blow the dirt out of most of his 4 bay garage and picked some stuff up, soooo much more needs to be done. My garage has canning stuff, windows to work on, a table full of stuff for it and the place is totally cluttered again. I have to catch up, I want to get my canning done, but the tomatoes are just ripening a few at a time.
We considered the property to buy in NY, then we both kind of came to our senses. Both properties up there would need a ton of work. Hubs said it would be a year at least before we could get to them. He is right about that. We are going to back pedal. We both said we need to finish here before we touch any more projects, we have existing work on rentals here and hubs is busting his butt trying to get stuff done before winter. And I want new floor coverings here if we did that, no way would it happen. We are even thinking of pulling at least $30k from an IRA CD that is coming due the 23rd, we have work I want to do and this year or next hubs is going to need another vehicle. This will be a low income year so thinking a good time to pull it. But I need to check with our accountant to see where we are. I have to catch my books up again, so I know where we are now, only about a month behind. My concern is generating to much income and having our medicare premiums go up for a year and I mean a lot if we pull to much out. I have got to do more. though I am still having pain at night and some leg weakness it is sooooo much better then last week. I have to call the heart doc about statins but I don't want to because I dread the answer. I cannot take something hurting me so bad.

I did get a couple of things off my list yesterday. Bagged up some clothing for donation, one box of misc, a lamp and a toaster oven. All got dropped off yesterday. Trimmed back (although it needs a little more) the rose bush in the back yard.

Hope this helps. There is one other 8th grade math teacher. DN3 teaches advanced math and the other teacher teaches general ed math. They use the same book and are supposed to end up at the same place at the trimester. It sounded like he has been talking to the other teacher quite a big. He also also the head of the department who was his math teacher when he was a student. He was her star pupil and because of how he tested on some math test, the two of them went on a trip to a recognize math students and be with other kids who were good with math. He has approximately 100 students a day, which has been a shock to him.

startsmart -- Love the quilt. Great job. TheOtherMe -- As a retired math teacher I will tell what I did to help with the grading. Also 100 students isn't a lot usually 130-150 is the norm. 1.) Correct one page at a time. You will get to know the answers by the time you get to the 3rd paper or so. 2.)Circle the errors. Do not correct each mistake. 3.)Supply a copy of the answer sheet with all work shown for corrections. 4,)Redo the most common errors when reviewing/discussing the returned test. 5.)Classwork/ Sub work. -- If have to leave sub work make sure you check it. Tell students that you will decide which problems you will check at a later date. So if you assign a worksheet of 20 problems then chose 4 or 5 scattered throughout the worksheet and only check those. Usually only one of each major type of skill and one from the beginning. one from the end and a few from the middle. 6.) Homework -- check to see if they did it and review in class. Do not pick up to grade. Supply answers on overhead, smart board or whatever you have. Go over the ones that students request as the most troublesome. 7.) Quizzes -- limit to only a few problems at a time. I usually gave 5 problems. Give them frequently but easy to grade and gives an idea on what needs to be retaught. 8.)Grade daily -- Otherwise the papers will multiply like rabbits. 9.) Do not store old tests. Make students responsible for holding on to their own work. Have them store everything in a binder. I would do a binder check each grading period. I would hand out a list of what they should have in the binder and have them check for the papers. (I would have them check a peer's binder but not sure what current laws are.) 10.)Do not return papers until all makeup tests have been taken. Or do a different test for those with a makeup. 11.) If budget allows -- run off tests in two different colors. These can be two different tests or the same test that the students think are different) Will add more if I think of anything.

Thank you moneysquirrel What he said was the last 3 years, he was teaching at the residential school and usually had 10-12 students at a time, so having 100 tests to grade felt overwhelming by comparison. He also said he is finding it difficult not being able to know each of his students like he knew those 10-12 students. There isn't enough time to do that. He said his biggest problem is the phone issue. The middle school has a rule that has been told to all parents and students. He said he is allowing 3 warnings before confiscating the phone and taking it to the office. The kids don't want the phone sent to the office the second time because a parent has to come with the kid to pick it up. He said feet selfies are a big thing with the kids. A group of girls was taking feet selfies and he knew it. He was going to let it go because there were only 4 minutes until the bell rang. Then a flash went off and he could not ignore it. To the office went the phone and the student lied to him. That makes him angrier with the student than if she had just said she did it. She might have talked him out of the office if she hadn't told him 3 different stories in 60 seconds about what happened.

What I'd give to to only have 100 students. My max is 185. DH's max is 210. Where we used to live, my range was 140 - 185. Where we currently live, my range is 125 - 145.
He'll adjust to learning all of their names. He can use scratch paper and have students make trifold name tents. I will admit that I'm super good at having names memorized by the end of the second week. I do recognize that not everyone is as skilled at that task. I have lots of areas I'm not skilled at, so don't worry there. Encourage your son to keep building positive relationships with students. He can talk to them about their feet. Put funny stuff on his own feet. But, he needs to maintain consistency with the rule. It will make the kids more frustrated if he's inconsistent.
Teaching is the best. Keep giving him kudos.

I'm creating a master schedule for the new school I'm managing. Super stressful because I don't want to make a mistake.
I'm also at the point where I need to have a bit more solid of work/life boundaries. I'm not sure I know how to accomplish that though. Do people really just say "I'm not working after 5:00pm?" I'm so stressed about "getting everything done" that I'm working 15 hour days. It's not that I'm disorganized; it's that there's so much work to do. I need to figure out a way to maintain my sanity though. I cried a lot last week, and it was only the second week of school.
