Ever so poor that you had to breast feed longer to save on formula?
Ever so poor you realized that you could never starve a roach?
Once I learned and realized I could not be starved out no matter how poor, it was a point of empowerment.

No matter how clean you keep your place the roaches thrive...on any drop of anything that can give them sustenance.

OK Deb, I usually just avoid your threads, but I have to let you know that it creeps me out that you use a random phrase to start a thread...

An opportunity for those who have been poor to share their lessons for others.
Nothin' wrong with having been poor.
Sorry if this struck a nerve.
If you survived it and came out of it..that says much.

I've been so poor that I lived off of ramen, potatoes, and tap water. It wasn't pleasant, but I think it builds character and makes you appreciate everything you have even more.

Never starve a roach? Or even starve a roach? Just don't put a pink collar on them and name them. ETA: Oops! Sorry Elizabeth! I should have read down further before I joked. And I agree with what you just said! Karma for you in 5!

As a child there were so many of them I trapped them underneath glass jars and learned their life cycles.

Ever Been Poor? ..Any Lessons Learned?
"I have been rich and I have been poor, and quite frankly I would rather be rich"
And whoever said "money can't buy you happiness" was full of BS" With enough money you can buy anything you want to make your life better and happier. And when you give away your wealth to help those less fortunate; than you will well experieice it brings a lot of happiness to both parties..

Yeah, when I first got out of college and was trying to get my foot in the door, I accepted a job where I was taking home about $140/week in Boston. I paid almost half my take home salary for a place to live. I remember one week where I had worked about 80 hours, came home from work on public transportation after 9pm (Harvard Medical is not very safe area to be picking up public transportation from) and walked into my apartment starving. Nothing to eat in the fridge, my favorite greasy spoon joints were closed at that time but I was too tired to go out and get something anyway. The phone rang and it was the American Cancer Society. They wanted me to do my job for cancer research and collect for them from my building. Hysterical laughter.......my response? I had worked for HALF of what I'd get paid at a minimum wage job that month, I was dogassed tired doing 'my job for cancer' (yeah, I was doing cancer research) and if they didn't think that that was sufficient, they were SOL. Click.
Things were tight, very tight. My savings grace was that every time I went home (about every other month), I got loaded up with groceries by my folks.
But it did get my foot in the door in the trajectory I wanted to take.

Never been poor so to speak, but I have many family members who struggle. It taught me to make the most of my opportunities.

I have been so poor that all I lived on for months was Cream of Wheat and Cream of Rice.
Lesson learned: don't shack up with a stripper.

Well thank you as well Mrs Possibly-Intellectual. How did your Red Sox do tonight? They blew it big time in the 8th inning and lost to the Rangers

I grew up poor...lesson learned-it sucked and I didn't want to be poor as an adult. Damn skippy! Money may not buy happiness, but poverty is pretty fucking miserable all by itself. Thirded! While it wasn't when I was young we had a few years when we didn't have enough money after paying the mortgage utilities etc that we had to choose between basic groceries and gas for the car. There were many times when my DD was little that I would turn down invitations to my family because I couldn't afford to fill up the tank and pay the tolls to get there. Interestingly my Dd remembers that time quite fondly. She never knew how little we had. All she remembers is that I used to do things like take scraps of cloth from old clothes and papers and set up art/craft projects for her and her friends. She also remembers how I would let her ride her bike to school with me walking and I would walk her bike home. She and all her friends thought it was so great that she got to ride her bike instead of having to go in a car. I just remembered that we even had the electricity turned off. We ate on the living room floor picnic style to candle light. She still asks if we can eat picnic style with candles. She thought it was the best. I had totally forgot that until now. Maybe what I learned is that kids can really be happy with very little as long as they don't know they are poor. Anything can be fun if you try hard enough.

Ratchets, I don't think your avatar will make it on Sarah's campaign poster.
Anyway, back to topic: DH & I were so poor when we first were married that we lived on PB sandwiches for months. We were fresh out of school and the job market was awful (a lot like right now, actually). But you learn you can survive the hard times, and work hard & pray for better times.

We were pretty poor as I recall after my Mom's divorce. What did I learn? Money may not buy happiness but it sure makes it easier to be happy.

Ever Been Poor? ..Any Lessons Learned?
I learned that you can darn near live on nothing & if your young sometimes you don't even realize it.
I remember once pulling extra military CQ (24 hours straight) 3 weekends in one month (as a sub for someone else). Total extra money earned...$30 (10 for each 24 hour shift). That was a lot of extra money for us.
When I first got married we ate Kraft Macaroni at least 4 out of every 5 days. I can also remember stocking up on it when it was on sale.
