Do you pay for services before receiving them?

I've been asked for a credit card up front from spa and service type places. It was not charged up front, it was to guarantee the booking and would have been charged if I was a no show.   I can see why they do it, and I didn't have any problem with it.  They are holding a time slot open for you and if you don't show up it's not like they can generally immediately fill it, so they would just be out that $70.  I'm not even sure I would have a problem being charged up front, as long as they had a reasonable refund policy.
