I had an iPhone 4 (?) prior to this phone and it was decent enough. I hated that I basically had to get rid of it when the newest system upgrade came out because it slowed down the phone, drained my battery, and basically made it 10 times harder to operate because the older phone couldn't handle the update. This is a consistent problem across Apple devices. I fear this happening to my 4-year old iPhone 5. So far so good (fingers crossed). I'm happy with mine except for storage- I'm continuously deleting apps I don't use, deleting podcasts and am still not sure I have enough space to add photos from my last trip. Whatever I do when I replace this, storage will be a big priority. I won't replace it unless forced to by circumstances steph described and then I'll think long and hard about NOT getting an iPhone. Prices to buy the newer ones outright (and that's the only way I'll do it) are getting too rich for my blood.

Another dedicated Samsung person here. Currenty using the Note 8. My brother liked it so much, he got one too. I love the ability to use a stylus now and then if I need it. Beyond that, I just think Samsung makes a good phone. Even if you go to a slightly older model, I think you would be happy with it.

I am a pretty faithful Samsung user, currently have the S7. If you are used to a heavy duty flip phone, maybe ask to see the Galaxy S8 Active. It is supposed to be a "rugged" phone. Regardless, just make sure you get a screen protector for it. Everyone that I know that has had an iPhone has gone through many screens.
^this on the Active. I have an S6 active with a "life-proof" case by i-Blason (~$20 on Amazon) that has gotten the shit kicked out of it and barely has a.scratch on the phone itself. as far as Samsung, I've had a few. the Galaxy Nexus (precursor to the S series), an S4 and now the S6 Active for about 2 and a half years. Android lifer here as well, and unless Samsung goes off the rails, likely a lifer there too. ETA:.apologies for piling on, didn't see the update til I caught up!

TD and I have had the same iPhone 6 (he has the 6+ model) since early 2015.....one screen, and neither of them cracked despite being dropped. They are also in a good case. We bought them outright. I do need to see about a battery replacement for both of them, I may do that today, since TD left his at home. If paying $30 for a new battery can get us another 3 years, that’s a good thing.
We went with th3 iPhone as moth of us had flip phones and iTouches pre 2015. I had an iPad, and it just seemed easier. All of our computers are NOT Apple.
