Kelo vs. New London is the one that expanded eminent domain. It's not current but it's impactful, esp since the land taken may not have been developed yet.
The Pennsylvania gerrymandering is current and is getting into State rights vs. Federal rights.
SCOTUSblog.Com is my go to site for Supreme Court news.
Constitutioncenter.org/blog is interesting. It covers odd facts as well as court cases.

Also, keep an eye/ear on the Tennessee-Delta fight over discounts for the NRA. It was suggested that Citizens United could be used against Tennessee in a 1st Ammendment Rights suit. Could be a good one for talking about how rights can be expanded and used in ways the Court could not have forseen in their original ruling.

If you don't mind my asking: who gets to determine which essay is best? And what exactly constitutes "best"? My experience online, in person, and even at debate clubs is that the most popular, well-received, well-reviewed answers are nearly always the most rote, unsophisticated ones, unless the evaluators are trained in formal debate, experienced in judgment, and far more objective and dispassionate than the layman. I Googled scoring rubrics for argumentative essays but couldn't get one to paste clearly. I found some good ones. I would think one like the ones I found will be used for this writing competition. I encourage you to look at ones available on line. I'm no stranger to them. And I definitely recommend that Chloe also take a look for reference, although I'm assuming this contest comes with its own rubric.

Schooling/Education is an area in which most people have 12-16 years experience thus making them experts in the field of teaching.

Damn Thanks for the correction. I had earlier mentioned Tennessee would gladly welcome Delta's operations moving here. So your Tennessee-Delta link could have been okay too.

Those'm be mighty fine for a teacher folk to be usin' but My ex was an English teacher in a very small rural HS. I remember (has to be about 25 years ago now) her assigning an argumentative essay to her general population HS English class. You know, those kids who were headed straight to a job in the woods or the mill right out of high school. She created her own rubric. She used fishing. I don't remember many particulars, but I know she talked about a new shiny hook down to a rusty one and the quality of worm that they were placing on that hook.

In Oregon, every public school teacher is supposed to introduce the kids to that rubric in third grade. Every year from there, students are supposed to work on those writing traits. One of the state's graduation requirements is to pass on that rubric (score of 4 or higher) on every trait except for voice on two different writing samples.
The high schoolers are well versed in that rubric.
Anyhoo, the contest was interesting. One of the stressors was that the kids didn't feel like there was enough time--90 minutes. That was what they had for reviewing the provided research and writing.
Most of them picked the minimum age for purchasing a long gun.
I think 15% picked the mandatory reporting one.
