We have two pop stations here. One uses the PG version of songs, but the other uses the version with cursing and substitutes random sounds over the words.
So, Cee Lo's song F%&* You on one station is Forget You, and on the other we hear a toilet flush, a bell ring and gal make a suggestive sound. In the same vein, the song "Lovin' You" is true to it's actual title on one, but on the other station - same deal - a record scratch, a car horn, etc.
First off, I have no idea why Enrique decided to even make the dirty version - I guess it is to give him some street cred - but it is just weird to me. Do people go around and say to people that they are having sex with "Tonight, I'm f*cking you." I mean - I understand Cee Lo's song - the gal broke his heart and he told her new boyfriend and her to F*ck off. That is okay.
But, in both songs, I prefer the version that has substitute words. Because my kids are young, I would rather they not hear the "real" lyrics 20 times a day (they listen to the pop station on the school bus, in my car and on the radio at home.) And I find the random sounds distracting to the song.
Which do you prefer?

I've only heard the one song on the radio (Cee Lo--didn't even know who sings it), had no idea the words weren't originally "forget you". My town is small and they usually use an edited version, if it's done by the original singer it's not too bad I guess, but when they dub it it's horrible. The country station silences the word "coke" or "cocaine" so it's a little weird (the kid rock song--I don't remember who he sings it with). I think I'd get annoyed if they just added random sounds, unless it's a song I just laugh at or ignore anyway. It's also annoying when they substitute a phase with a term that makes no sense, just to get rid of one that "might be offensive" and still rhyme.

Probably the one with Sheryl Crow - Picture, or something???
The first time I heard "Forget you" with the real lyrics was on a youtube video where a girl signed-it for her ASL class project. Super cute!

the Cee Low video is in the music section here. That's where I first heard of and saw the video. Liked it so much I purchased from Amazon and a few of his other songs as well! But our radio station will play a song by Lil Kim! like every other word is muffled or silenced out! so I'm like what the hell is the point of playing her song! Then on the flip side if 50 Cent makes a radio version I'm like what the hell is the point of playing the song without the cussing! so I guess I'm on the fence on this subject!

It's no different than using 'bleeps' to mask the offensive word.

I only just heard it recently myself, and didn't think "Forget You" was a dub. whoever did it, they did a great job! apple - that is Picture, with Sheryl Crow. I usually change the channel when it comes on (don't really care for KR) but I know what you mean about bleeping out "cocaine" in the song. um, last I checked, that wasn't a curse, but whatever floats your boat. another song that had some odd censorship was a few years ago - "What It's Like" by Everlast. there's a verse about a guy who gets caught up with drug dealers, picks a fight one night and pulls out his "chrome 45" which got blanked out on the stations around here. really? with all the guns on TV, you're gonna blank that out?!

Lol, chiver, I usually change the station too. KR has some good songs and I kind of like him, but can't really stand Sheryl Crow. I noticed it when I was in the shower--can't change the station from there

My problem with the "bleeped" version is that once the kids are elementary school age, they pretty much figure out what is bleeped anyway.

If not be able to teach you some new words I should learn how to swear in Spanish and some other languages. My SIL is Chinese, I should talk to her.

I prefer dirty versions, so that way I don't look like a fool when I try to sing it. A rock station I used to listen to always scrambled the dirty words. For years, I thought the first lyrics to Godsmack's "Whatever" included "I don't need your fish today". Until I got satellite radio and proceeded to sing it that way in front of my husband, who informed me that the word is "shit", not "fish". I knew something didn't sound right.

When the song "I'm Your Venus" by Shocking Blue came out in the early '70s or so, everybody sang it as "I'm Your Penis".

Eh.. I'd rather just hear the song the way it was written. We've never been overly worried about keeping the kids from hearing swearing though. They watch R rated movies with us, and we swear at home sometimes anyway.

I heard the Adam Sandler song "POS Car" many times in its unedited form before I even knew there was an edited version. That's the advantage of listening to college FM stations, I guess.

Thyme, I agree with you about not wanting kids to hear the dirty versions. As far as the Cee Lo song, which is a great song, I'm fine with the original, but I prefer the "Forget You" version to saying "F You" or putting random bleeps in. I would rather hear "forget" then "f." It's a letter, not a word at that point, and it just sounds stupid.

I love the Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow song! I always sing it to the top of my lungs when it comes on.
I didn't know who the other song was by.
Most of my old music has a lot of cussing in it. I don't let my kids listen to my Bikini Kill or the other cds like that, but I do let them listen to the uncensored Eminem and stuff.

My DDs love that song by The Dream "Shorty is a Ten" so I downloaded it onto my ipod and played it in the car. Turns out the real lyrics are shorty is the shit. I insist to them that he is actually saying 10. My oldest DD is onto though, but she knows not to say "potty words."

2X fair warning:
1. The song is not "bleeped". 2. If you're an Original Trekie, prepare to laugh yourself into a hernia.

I'm not a fan of songs with a lot curses being played on the radio. Not because it's offensive, but because it ruins the song! "Killing in the Name" is the WORST song to play on the radio! I hate hearing "[zip sound] won't do what you tell me" 50 million times. I'd rather not hear it on the radio, or at least hear a better Rage Against the Machine song that doesn't have 50 F-bombs in the span of two minutes (this is an old example). I do think that Radiohead's "Creep" sounds better with the lyric "so very special" instead of "so fucking special." I hear more of a bitter sarcasm with "very" than "fucking."
