Penny stocks: I posted on the old board that i would start a penny thread under the SI banner over here so here it is. a penny stock under $5.00 by most definitions and includes sub pennies so that is what the focus of this thread should be. please contribute any thoughts you have on stocks that fit this category

Tough to make good money in stocks under $5 as most institutions avoid them. Do hold 3... CIM (about 4.25+) (quite heavily traded high income stock) US REIT, and two China ADRs CWS (3.50+) and TPI (2.70+) (current price ranges). Plan to get out of the ADRs as soon as I can get a decent profit. Who knows what the next policy will be in China, so too much risk. IMO, for the average investor, it is better to be in more established blue or red chip level stocks, although they do have much higher prices. Penny stocks more a roll of the dice in the Wall Street casino. Caveat: There are some penny stock players who do make money, but they normally are pro's who have been around the block a few times and know what they are doing. Trading pennies can be rewarding for some, but not the naive. Have to know the game and be constantly on alert. Need extra bit of good karma.

I hold some NVAX at 2.38. It now looks like they are starting to bring their plan into operation.

I own a few sub $5 stocks: BDSI, DROOY, KAZ, XIN. I don't own them because they are penny stocks, but rather in spite of the fact. In my opinion the liquidity of a stock is more important than it's absolute value, though as ModE said above, many institutions won't use low priced stocks even if their fundamentals and liquidity are good. Sometimes just clearing that $5 or $10 mark to the upside will ignite a stocks's JATO just because people who were watching (or screening) it before suddenly bring it into their universe of acceptable tickers. Here's a list of stocks that fall into the category of trying to cross 5: CTFO DVOX HEK HW ISTA TASR TGB Since my screener works from yesterday's closing data, a couple of them did cross today, and one fell back into the mire, so probably best to exclude CTFO and TASR from the list. I set up a tracking port for these and will try to remember to post results now and again.

Welcome gambler. A few of us are adverse to the penny plays but sub $5, not so much. I'm not sure you will find some support here but if not at least you have a new home.

For penny stocks, I am watching actc and cfri right now although admittedly I am a novice if anyone wants to give me some feedback on these. Long time lurker and few time poster on the msn boards. I alerted on siri when I bought it at a nickel unfortunately, outside my 401k I am on limited funds and got out for a small profit but obviously it turned out fantastically.
I am break even on some V 75 Jan calls right now if anyone has input on those.
Liking the potential upside on options after Rovo's play on F. Are you still holding those?

I was always of the opinion that the bar was set under $10, but I am flexible. I do not own anything that doesn't have figures in front of the decimal. Under $10 from time to time, but nothing trading below about $5, I will probably read this thread, but just lack the insight to contribute. It should be fun learning.

Thank you for your inputs and welcome I have done very, very well on pennies so far as percentage wise much better than the few higher $ stocks i have and a heck of allot better than my day trades. I have been watching actc for a while and most likely will get in shortly. my other holding that qualify for pennies are gsi, cris and cycc any thoughts on these?

Hi tec/gambler! I know not that many people are interested in Penny Stocks, but some have worked out for me. I bought ASIA at $4 and sold at $30. Of course I waited a couple years for the growth but I usually hold mine for at least a year.
Anyway, I'm doing my DD on CDCS and AOB. Let me know what you guys think?

onekammery.....good to see you here!!!
My fav penny stock right now is SSN. They are an oil and Gas exploration co. They are working now here in Wyoming and are almost ready to complete a 3D seismic survey. My contacts here believe that they will find oil. That's as far as I will go. You can do your own research. I bought at $1.10.

you might do well to look at mnkd although it passed the $5 mark it was pulling Back a bit. the FDA put off the approval/disapproval date for it's inhale insulin. if it is approved this will be huge as it will eliminate the need for daily shots. I got in under 5 so i am sneaking this one in

Here's a two day track of the "trying to cross above 5" list given above. Not too bad, considering the light market action this week. Mentioned it earlier in this thread but I really like both ACTC and CFRI and plan to get a small stake in both if I have extra funds before they run up. CFRI has already given an opportunity for a nice gain since I mentioned it. Of course had I gotten in it would have gone the other way LOL.
For a small dollars instead of pennies, C seems to have a nice chance of running in 2011.

I like risky biotech ISCO as a stem cell play. They have patents on parthenogenetic stem cell development (not embryonic); but, as do all companies of this type, they burn through the cash. The do have a potential revenue producer in their Lifeline skin care products, recently endorsed by John Mauldin. But this has also caused a runup in the stock, from about $1.40 to over $2.00, and now back to about $1.85. As low as -$1.00 in 2010. Again, these are extremely risky, but, to my mind, have a place in the very small gambling portion of the portfolio.

Happy New Year all! LVLT was pretty good today up 9.71%. Let's see if it's sustainable. I'm also happy to see C hitting $5. Maybe it will hit above $5 tomorrow.

Do you guys remember ANX? They had a reverse stock split months back and left shareholders in pain. Anyway, the FDA just accepted their ANX-530 (Exelbine) NDA for filing. So, there's some light for this stock. It's trading at $2.95 right now.

I think the odds are about 2/1 against C but even so a 3/2 pay out still makes sense.
