Like athena, I need goals now that I am retired. They keep me going.
After my horrible winter (gallbladder issues and surgery), my goal this year was to be healthy enough to go to Colorado for Thanksgiving. Tickets are purchased.
I have a new goal of decluttering my house and living a minimalist lifestyle. This goal is not something I would have had at any other point in my life. Not quite sure where it came from. Most days I am enjoying the process. Some days I come across something that is emotional for me and sends back to memories I don't want to remember. It's a process.

I have two:
I want to outlive all my doctors (my paternal grandmother did; we nicknamed the last one "Dr. God" and had to tell her he died of a heart attack. He was 60; she was 94 and lived to 100).
I am planning to run a race in all 50 states. A 5K, 10K, triathlon, swim meet or open water swim; doesn't matter. But I want to compete at least once in each state. I have four states done so far.

Interesting thread! I'm in the same boat as swamp: I'm stuck in the river of working full time plus while making sure that I raise my children to be tolerable people I am nearing the end of that tunnel though. I do want to complete a doctorate, but I'm not sure that's an unusual goal.

I retired over 3 years ago and if I had no plans, no commitments, nothing that required any discipline, life would be pretty meaningless. One quote I saved when I read it (don't remember the author) is that the three essential things for a happy life are something to do, someone to love and something to hope for. I don't know. I think my life will still have meaning if I don't have to-do lists that are miles long... Right now my to-do lists are pretty god-awful. I mean, alone at work, I'm trying to squish 2-3 months of work into the next four weeks. That's with Job 1. Then with Job 2, not only is it keeping up with all the kids current needs, but getting plans together for them when I won't be teaching and they need stuff to work on. I've started in with Christmas prep a little bit..just enough that I don't feel completely overwhelmed. My list there is really long... We haven't even gotten to kid activities yet. Or even the kids' needs. Or even to the preparing for a baby to-do list. Or the fact that I'm in grad school and there's the school to-do list. So, by your measure, I should have an exponentially meaningful life. I don't think my life is worth more now..than, say it was when I was 25.

My goal was to complete a doctorate too, but I don't care very much about it anymore (a bit though). I'm ABD but my coursework was done 30 years ago, so I'd certainly have to start over. Here in France they used to have an official "ABD degree" in those days (ie PhD coursework and a shorter thesis). I actually have that degree, which was "official" at the time I obtained it. It doesn't exist anymore today, now that France has finally "gotten with the program" and does regular Associates/BA or BS/MSc/PhD degrees. For now my unusual goal is to make it through the next 4 weeks of this semester.

So, by your measure, I should have an exponentially meaningful life. I don't think my life is worth more now..than, say it was when I was 25. I'll have to say this exchange is one of the reasons I sometimes really really hate these boards. Because people read what you write and they decide that's its not just about what the poster believes it must somehow also apply to the reader of the post. Now I am not think like most of you, actually I know I don't, but at least if I had written what Athena wrote it would be entirely about what I wanted and what I valued for myself. The YMMV, your life plan might be different and equally valid SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE SAID EVERY DAMN TIME!
(Warning, I am sick and filters off, so I really and mentally and physically unable to be anything but mad and blunt about things I would award stupidity cards for. So a stupidity card to Girmomma for making Athena's post all about her instead of simply sharing her values, her desires. If there is only one thing I could teach everyone on this board is what *I* post is about *ME* specifically unless I state otherwise. And in RL, generally, way more often than you all think (general board you) most posts unless stated otherwise are about the poster. Should you feel they apply to you......
THAT IS A CHOICE YOU!!! MAKE. This is the individual you, whatever reader takes my(someone's) post in vein because of mental issues, flawed thinking or just the need to make it about them right now, right then etc. So back to this particular exchange, I'd award another stupidity card simply because Girmomma happens to be the one who screwed up and is pissing me off about all the idiots who have to make it about them when I, or anyone (in this example Athena) post ...
... POST Too Too long (HELL YEAH! ) ... starting read here- The authors quote can be discussed as a talking about from his POV, but any assumption as to why Athena saved it, might be incorrect. YMMV, yada yada.
So, why is Girmoma mad? IDK. She tics off the first two points easily - something to do, she has a job, and kids. Someone to love - she has several someones: kids, a husband, the third should be a self defining slam dunk for almost anyone not depressed. Now she did not state anything to hope for, except that her life has more meaning /worth more than when she was 25. Done and done. So she's ticks box three. What's the beef unless she unconsciously wanted to misread Athena's post?

I'd like to self-publish a book or two (or more). With Kindle Direct Publishing you can self-publish and they'll print paperbacks for you, that'll be pretty cool.

It's certainly possible to have TOO much to do (juggling work, grad school, kids) and no, I wouldn't claim that makes your life exponentially more meaningful. Been there/done that while trying to work FT, take actuarial exams and have a personal life, and while raising DS when I was married to my first husband, who was unemployed the last 5 years of the marriage but did nothing around the house.

However, it would also be nice to not have to have goals. To just be and live life rather than running from one deadline and To Do to another! I disagree. Goals and aspirations are what make you want to get up in the morning- especially if they're built around your own interests and passions. Many of the ones listed here ARE. I retired over 3 years ago and if I had no plans, no commitments, nothing that required any discipline, life would be pretty meaningless. One quote I saved when I read it (don't remember the author) is that the three essential things for a happy life are something to do, someone to love and something to hope for. While I don't have the same reading goal as swasat, I try to make sure that my pile form the library regularly includes a book translated form another language because it gives me insight into a different culture. I understand what your are saying about needing goals, discipline, etc. However, i think i have been very goal oriented and disciplined most of my life. I just wonder if there is a point where I can say, it's OK to just relax and just Be. I am doing that more and more. Really just focusing on today and not worrying so much about down the road. And, is there a point where our Good Enough can just be good enough?

I love this threads! Having goals has always been very important to me. My non-traditional goals are; getting adult braces and a surgery that would correct my bite. I don't have to do it, it would be expensive and difficult, but I would love to get it. It would improve my face and my quality of life. Writing cozy mysteries. I would love to be a cozy mystery writer. I have never found the time, the organization or creativity to write one. But I am confident I will get there. Becoming a translator. In my country of birth being a translator is a very prestigious, difficult to achieve and well paid career. I don't think it is even a career here in the States. That one is more like a pipe-dream because after all my years at night school, I'm certainly not going back for more.

I agree with the travel. in place of the frig magnets. I want at least one passport stamped to completion; filled up. and no more than two visits to the same area. I can see myself going back to Brazil. also not really going past two filled passports. also for nostalgia reasons. I would like to travel to see the real in person castles. like Disney has. or the real life castle of Dracula!

to have my own cooking or travel/event channel on social media (and actually have viewers, lol). Sometimes while I'm cooking I will actually talk/explain stuff like I'm doing a cooking show.

Disney's castle is based off of a German castle I believe and the other one is Vlad the Impaler in Romania. Cinderella Disney castle is based off of Castle Neuschwanstein of Bavaria, while Magic Kingdom is based off of Alcázar of Segovia of Spain.

Start putting it on YouTube. There’s tons of mommy vloggers/clean with me/shopping hauls/cooking/day in the life, etc. For some of them I have no idea why, but they have thousands of followers. Some have done well enough with ad revenue and sponsored content that their husbands have been able to quit their jobs to stay home and “manage” their wives’ social media. 😳 I’m sure you have as much or more to offer than they do.

I have never done any gardening other than planting some landscaping, etc. I just always had other things to do. So, eventually, i would like to plant and grow a nice garden. I always wanted to grow those giant sunflowers. I think those are so pretty. When you plant your vegetable garden, it's actually pretty useful to plant those giant sunflowers in or next to your veggie beds. The birds will swoop down to the sunflower head to eat the seeds, but will then spy the bugs on your plants and go after them - picking your garden free of pests and helping you grow healthy, bug-free veggies and avoiding pesticides I had these giant shield shaped bugs invade my sunflowers and eat them before they got very big.
Apparently, bugs consume all the sunflowers around here because I rarely see them growing in anyone else's yard.
Dang it.

We would like to buy and restore and old antebellum or colonial home on a little bit of land. We have been looking for a few years and we have found a few close candidates, but haven't found the perfect house yet. We found a beautiful one in Frederick last week, but it wasn't in need of any restoration (and not on enough land).

Become a proficient public speaker Have you considered Toastmasters? I've been a member for 12 years. I'm retired but still love an audience and still enjoy the people in my club. It's cost-effective (compared to the typical seminars on the subject) and has the huge advantage of regular practice, with feedback, in a supportive environment. Yeah, I know, I sound like I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, but it could really help.

I'll watch!! I love cooking shows even though I don't do a lot of cooking My latest favorite is Julie Taboulie's Lebanese Kitchen. Can I be a guest one it one day - I promise not to catch the kitchen on fire!

I am a decent public speaker (have presented a few times in my industry) but I really want to get a lot better. I think Toastmasters would definitely help. The problem I am having is finding one that meets on a day and time that works for me. The one I really want to join, that I think would be the best for my field, meets on Tuesdays at lunch. Tuesdays are the day when my board President and our legislative committee meet so that doesn't work. There is one that meets at 6:30AM. I am an early riser, but not quite that early...I will find one eventually.
