Yep, saw that. I wonder if anyone catches the irony of a nurse needing to protect the rights of an officer from one of his own ilk? At the time though, I don't think that they knew...but that is a moot point. The reason the police needed the blood was this accident was during a police chase. Even if this man was an innocent victim, the police needed it for the up coming lawsuit, if he had anything in his blood, it could be used to reduce the amount of money paid out!!

And it is so hard to differentiate between a tripod and camera vs gun.

They wanted his blood hoping he was under the influence of something to reduce their responsibility. I saw an article today that the hospital has changed their policies. Officers are no longer allowed in patient care areas. Although I doubt that would have stopped this guy.

I keep remembering the many times the police presence was so very helpful when trouble was encountered in our ER. We sure appreciated their help!

This seems like a case of "when you find yourself in a deep hole, stop digging." Sheesh dude.

Payne deserves to lose his job as a police officer in addition to his job as an EMT. (IMO) What a jerk. His supervisor wasn't much better.
Coincidence- When I had my last heart attack, and stents were put in, one of the Gold Cross EMT's that responded, yelled at me and told me to knock it off. (I was breathing heavy, trying to stop vomiting.) He told me I wasn't having a heart attack, it was only a panic attack. Based on that I almost didn't go to the hospital. I don't know that it was Payne, but it sure looked and sounded like him. I wish I would have reported him.

It doesn't matter whether it's a panic attack or something worse, you don't EVER scream at a patient who is under duress. Your job as a first responder is to do your best to calm the patient and promote cooperation with evaluation and treatment. Yelling at the person is certainly not going to accomplish that.

FYI I don't have panic attacks. I really did refuse to go to the hospital for awhile. I didn't want everyone thinking I was making it up, or that I'm a fool. There was another EMT that was really sweet and whispered to me that I was doing the right thing when I decided to go. When I got there & they ran tests, it really was a heart attack (my 2nd in 12 months). I have A-Fib. 2 long stents were put in. -Some people.

If an EMT said that to my loved one that would be the last thing that EMT ever said.

I'm so sorry you were treated so badly but glad you persevered and got the treatment you needed. Always report treatment like that and let the ER staff know exactly what happened. ER staff carries a big club with EMS. Even had it been a panic attack, those are nothing to laugh at either - especially if you're the person having one!

When my late husband had his fatal heart attack EMS came. They were slower to arrive than usual but that can be because there are a lot of calls. I was told, later, that was the case. However, when they arrived I was doing CPR. They took over and prepared their defibrillator - which didn't work. Now, I knew enough to know he wasn't going to survive. From what I could determine he had no rhythm to shock. Even so, the fact that the defibrillator didn't work was a big issue for me and one I followed up on with superiors at our EMS provider. There's no excuse for EMS to be carrying a defibrillator that flat-ass doesn't work. They should be tested every shift. I knew most of the personnel involved and I raised more than a little sand over the incident. I had no interest in suing anyone but was more focused on being sure this kind of thing wouldn't happen again.

So far it has saved every life. There's no excuse for EMS to not have a functioning defibrillator. I would have been very upset too!

Since Irma shifted a bit to the west it's set to bypass us. Probably rain and wind but nothing really horrible. Florida is really going to get a battering. I feel so badly for all those in its path. Really a scary monster!

Yea, I know, the police are getting a rap over something only 1% of cops do!! Really??
I will point out that the Salt Lake police had videos and reports about what went on in that hospital on July 26th,,,,,
Got that,,,,, July 26th! They did nothing for well over a month,, Only then after the videos were released by Wubbel's attorney did the shit hit the fan!!!!
So the police don't need civilian oversight?? If it wasn't for the video, this would have covered up by the police!!!!
Yea,,, Police investigating police, works every time!!

When I had trouble with an officer who liked me, so kept pulling me over, I was afraid to report him. If he was making my life uncomfy when he liked me, just think how uncomfy he could make it when he didn't like me! It was a BAD situation. Cover up I got your back seems to go a little too far, too often, if you ask me. Have you heard anything more on this?

I've asked you this before OC but you wouldn't answer, what is the current police incident rate, what do you think it should be, and how do you propose we get there? I would say in my experience 15% of corporate employees are pretty inept, why would you expect police to be any better? Are you willling to pay higher taxes to attract better candidates?

I had heard that Officer Payne was not the only one put on paid leave, but they wouldn't say who, or how many others were as well. Today I read that his supervisor (the watch commander at the time) was also put on leave. -Just an update.
@aj Good question. Probably not many people could answer it honestly. I know I don't have any idea how things should be done differently, that could be implemented and would actually be effective. Personally, I would be willing to pay higher taxes to attract better candidates, if I knew better candidates were being hired. The problem is that we don't know. Thus, I have no answers. It's not a job I could do.
We do the best we can, with what we have and hope for the best.

If you want the close to perfection you desire you are gonna have to up that pay significantly, probably double it.

I have a friend that was looking into police work for Surprise Az.
I think he said it started at $27.00 an hour plus benefits.
That does not seem to be underpaid.

www.yahoo.com/news/family-australian-woman-fatally-shot-wants-cop-involved-170936412.html The prosecutor said the investigation should be over by the end of the year. Amazing,, isn't it, the same prosecutor could make the decision to prosecute John Q. Citizen in ten minutes for doing the same thing! But because it is a police officer, it takes months, that way the shock of a police officer shooting an unarmed woman in her PJ's will be worn off because of all the other stories in between! After all just what was this woman doing running around in some back ally in her PJ's any way,,,,, something must be wrong with her. Let me save us all some time , after all the months, with the prosecutor not actually investigating anything, just stalling for time,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, let me guess, Dec 29,,, 4:59 in the afternoon,,, "After an extensive investigation we have found that the officer did did everything according to Dept policy!!" There you have it!
