Can someone explain this to me? What is it, what is it useful for?

Small, exceedingly basic computer. Useful for whatever you want to do something with...a small computer? We have one that has wifi capabilities that is set up to run some video game emulators.
If you want to do something like a wall with LED lights programmed to make patterns/whatever, Raspberry Pi would work.
Electronics projects that you need a computing module for- it is made to be inexpensive and bare bones.

It has all the old nintendo, super nintendo and sega games on an emulator.

I finally got to talk to the dean, I guess it was, of the learning tech program at the university I was looking at and now I'm not sure about that program. He comes from industry and is rewriting a lot of the program. He talked a long time and is obviously excited.. one thing he talked about was a new raspberry pi class, but he talked like I had a background on what that might be and I just couldn't transition to how it might be applicable in the classroom. I have a call into my undergrad school, who also has a learning tech grad program. I don't think they will be as cutting edge tech? But definitely more education focused rather than corporate focused? ... I don't know. The specific tech university has like 6 semesters a year, so I can pick up the next one if I decide to.

Both my sons have used Raspberry Pis at school. They were used as part of science/programming class. From talking to other parents, lots of schools in the district (can't say for sure all of them because I don't know parents at all of them, but seems like all the ones I'm familiar with anyway) have their students use Raspberry Pis at some point.

Yes, I understand it’s application to teaching students technology. He made the point that programming had been ineffectively taught and this would help correct that.
I am not interested in teaching kids technology however. I am more interested in how technology is employed in the ‘regular’ classsroom.
He indicated this would have applications for teaching math. But I wasn’t making the connection. I think maybe he was just referring to Wolfram. I was looking to see how others utilize/conceptualized the tech to see if I was missing something.
So, like with most of the things he discussed yesterday, I didn’t see how this might be worth it for me to pursue, to pay the $$ and spend the time to get the small bits I might be interested in and find applicable, and could acquire elsewhere.

I feel like I should put you in touch with X. He has a MLIS and is working on the dissertation for his Ed.D .... something to do with technology in education.
