According to the afternoon news report, police claim it was an apparent terrorist attack, and the two perpetrators who exited their vehicles after the attack ran into a café and are in a standoff with police. More senseless deaths

I happened to be watching the tv when the news of the attack was announced. Scene of the aftermath were broadcast. I was somewhat surprised the tv announcer was stating one person had been killed when the tv showed multiple, twisted, bodies in the street.
I noticed there were friends or family around some of the dead and injured. But I teared up for the man lying motionless and alone by the side of a kiosk. And the reason I teared up was because no one should die alone. Someone, anyone, should have been with the man. He was somebody to someone.

I was just on Las Ramblas, in the exact path of the van, about six months ago.

One of those arrested had rented the truck used in the attack. He came from Morocco three days ago and claims his driver's license which was used to rent the truck was stolen from him and he was not involved.

Barcelona death toll is up to 13 people with another 100 people injured. There is no mention of the status of the attackers in this event.
Edited: Five attackers from the Islamic State participated in a second attack said the Spanish police in Cambrils. The police killed 4 suspects and wounded a fifth one who has since died; however, police believe these men may be connected to the Barcelona attack. Two other suspects were arrested in different Catalan cities, but the police are still trying to verify who were the drivers in the van in Barcelona.

Thyme, it is unclear whether there was only one vehicle in the Barcelona incident; the facts change as police discover more information. News just confirmed one van.
The 5 suspects involved in the second attempted incident were killed and not interviewed. I am sure the story will change again.
The police have two individuals in custody who they are interviewing. Edited: They were not the drivers of the van in Barcelona. It sounds like the police are casting a wide net throughout several cities..

One thought by the police (earlier today) was that there was a second/getaway van waiting for the driver after he plowed through the crowds and abandoned the vehicle. I don't know if that is still a theory.

Tenn, It is still a theory as the driver of the Barcelona van has not been caught. (Thursday) There was also another incident on Wednesday, and the 2 suspects in custody were arrested in Ripoll and Alcanar for their part in an explosion. They are from Morocco and Melilla, A Sp. territory bordering Morocco. Police said the 5 Cambrils suspects (who were shot dead) were wearing explosive vests. This seems to have been quite a big incident with 5 suspects shot in a second attack and a someone else blown up making a bomb on Thirsday. It difficult to sort truth from rumour because there are so many people there on social media.
Its difficult to stop this type of attack and its been happening all over Europe.....All these people have been doing is hiring a van or truck. We have barriers in our local city but the terrorists will just go to another city. I don't know what we are supposed to do tbh.

I don't know if that is still a theory. It was determined the 2nd van was not involved. Wasn't there a white car involved that hit a police blockade area running over two policemen? I remember seeing a photo of a white car that crashed at the checkpoint, and they got out and supposedly started shooting? This would explain multiple drivers involved. Or have they determined the two attacks were non related, or the first report was incorrect about the shooting after the crash?

Initial news changes over time as more is learned. I did see one woman died in a similar vehicle mow down incident and 5 terrorists were killed by police in a town about 70 miles from Barcelona. See ya, you dumb as people.

Even if we do manage to close the borders, we all should be worried about getting mowed down by a car. Apparently white US citizens have also learned this trick.

Now the Spaniards are marching through the streets, clapping and chanting.
Well, if that doesn't stop those ISIS bastards, nothing will.
That'll show them.
Until the next attack. And the next. And the next.

And the next. So what would you suggest the Spaniards do? What would you consider to be the appropriate course of action for them? It's not like terrorist attacks just started happening in Europe in the 2000s. The Basque Conflict started in the late 1950s. The last time Basque Separatists murdered civilians was Dec 2006 when the bomb they planted killed 2 people sleeping in their cars. They only gave the French police the coordinates to their weapons stashes this spring even though they declared a cessation to hostilities in 2011. Terrorists have been killing unsuspecting people at a minimum my whole fucking life all over the world. Maybe we did have sort of a "golden peace era" in Europe in the 90s but I don't remember it that way. So what should people do rather then say fuck you, I'm going to be careful but keep living my life.

Weltz is correctly pointing out that it's a phenomenal waste of time and energy. And if ISIS does happen to give a toot--which I highly doubt--it will see the defiance as a provocation.

Staying indoors behind locked doors is just what ISIS wants-to drive fear into the hearts of their enemy. ISIS wins.

The goal of terror attacks is to create a feeling of terror in the general population and get them to force their government to react in political ways that benefit those supporting the attacks. The way to ultimately end the attacks is to demonstrate that they are ineffectual. That is exactly what the Spaniards are doing and I applaud their efforts.
