And this time it really wasn't my fault! The back of the oven sparked last night while it was baking. At least that's what DD#1 said happened. I unplugged it and cleaned the outside of the oven, and didn't know what else would have caused it. Shockingly, cleaning and staring at it didn't seem to solve the problem. Tonight, I was cooking meatloaf. It's supposed to cook for 45 minutes. At 25 minutes, the oven started beeping and said err F10 on the screen.
According to the magical internet web, that means control board has died.
It will cost $250 to replace it.
So, we could pay that and keep going with the eight-year old range.
buy a new range that is the same (radiant glass top/electric oven) for about $600
buy an induction stove top/electric oven for about $1500
We use the range in some way every day and often more than once per day.
We have enough in cash beyond the EF for all three options.
What would you do?
Off to the closest Mexican restaurant for dinner...

I'd love to have an induction range (and yes, I know you can only use certain types of pans on it), but the reviews of all the ones I looked at scared me away. They're not as common here as in Europe and seem to have quality control issues. Many also seem to have issues with being incredibly finicky about not just the exact type of pan but an exact size as well...
So if you can find an induction one that will work - that would be great.

Do you use the stove top or oven more? I might opt for the convection oven over the induction oven. I have a quasi connection (has a fan but the heat source is still the traditional top and bottom vs also in the back like a true convection) and it cooks things so much quicker! And the top has several fast boil burners to help in that aspect.
Only negative is the stove top pretty much has big burners or small burners. No medium size burners that nicely fit my big sauce pans that are still a bit smaller than stock pots or really large pans
Eta damn autocorrect

I would probably replace the control board if I was sure that was the problem (and the only problem)--but I like our range. It was new when we moved in so it's about 7 years old but still in fine shape. On the other hand, if it were our 7yo refrigerator that died, I would take any possible excuse to get a new one So I'd say it depends on how much you like your current range. I probably wouldn't go the induction route personally, just because if I was going to spend that much it would be converting to gas (or a convection oven).

Bug sauce is just gross. (Says GRG who was opened a box of inventory at work today to find a 5 inch cockroach running around inside beneath the inventory. The box was from China, so a 5 inch Chinese cockroach. Bugs just creep me out.)

We currently have a convection oven, and I do like that. Well, except for the fact that it burnt my dinner this evening. Our fan is in the back. Definitely something to consider.

I'd probably just fix it if I knew that was going to take care of it. I know they say appliances are only supposed to last 10 years or so now, but all mine are 17 and still going strong. I'm shooting for a mass replacement at the 20 year mark. I did stick a couple hundred in the fridge 5 or 6 years ago for a new thermostat or something.

If the one you have is really fixable, I would fix it. Ranges are supposed to last a long time. The one I have is at least 10+ years old. I am careful, though, not to overuse it too much.

We did have to replace the heating element for the burners two years ago for $460. I don't dislike the range at all. The gas is actually the catalyst for this discussion. We live in such a rural area, gas lines were not even available here until five years ago. DH prefers gas stoves. Installing a gas line would cost at least $3,000 + a new stove. The induction range seems like a more financially logical solution.

Hmmm...I'd not taken the convection oven into consideration when I quickly researched before going to dinner. Including that option, a new range with a convection oven and radiant glass top is a minimum of $800.
(We do have all stainless steel appliances, and I'm not willing to have non-matching stuff.)

I replaced the control board on mine. I got the part for $80 and it was amazingly easy. Saved myself about $1100 compared to buying a new one.
I vote for fixing it yourself.

(We do have all stainless steel appliances, and I'm not willing to have non-matching stuff.) Don't complain. A standard electric range with no other feature than it has a self-cleaning oven cost me $950 ten years ago. My DIL bought the same range to sell her house for $1100, and hers lacked the self-cleaning feature. Mine is black/white, and hers is black. They are not available in stainless. This range's only unique quality is that it can replace a standard drop-in stove from the 1980s. It is a GE Spacemaker. The standard is 30" now, and it's something like a 28". The only way to get stainless is to remodel the kitchen. Believe me, I thought about it. Does the $800 one you are looking at feel like a bargain now? Glad to help!

Tennesseer and Jaguar have you learned nothing from my epic kitchen posts? I DO NOT USE THE OVEN I am dangerous enough with using the stove top!!!!
But I will say that a spark from the back while in use would be a really big clue to me that something is wrong and not to use!!

Our work has a induction oven in the big kitchen ( food company ) I just went and looked and the brand is Electrolux. I have not heard any of the bosses complaining about it and they do quite a bit of cooking on that puppy. But I just asked the owners of the company and since they are older they both hate it. She says it is touchy and it will beep at her. But the VP's of the company have no problem using it. So it is a mixed bag now.

I had your problem in January and replaced my stove (the one that cr*pped out was 12 yo). Like you I don't like mimatched stuff, though it is mostly because I have a tiny kitchen. At the time the SS ranges with a convection oven and radiant glass top were in the $500 range. Unfortunately the white ones were more expensive across the board . Got a white one at Lowe's anyway. Now what caught me by surprise was that all those ranges came without an electrical cord. I saw it before I went in store shopping so no problem but that was just plain weird to me...

I think that's because houses can have various electrical outlets. 3 or 4 prong, for example. Dryers are the same way.
