Doesn't surprise me at all. The liberal nature of California leads it to have many different groups popping up. The conservative nature of the South leads it to have only a few groups with a long history. So the total number of groups is not significant. What would be significant would be percentage of the total population who are members of hate groups.

I think there are many ways one could slice and slice the data. By number of groups, by total membership of hate groups, comparing it to population etc. California has a population of 39.25 million according to 2016 stats. Number 2 in the by number of group rankings is Florida with a population of 20.61 million.
Looking at number of groups only, California has one group per roughly 490,000 people and Florida has one group per roughly every 327,000 people.

Surprising that a huge state, with the largest number of residents and an extremely diverse population/economy would also happen to have the most {{fill in the blank}}.
Next you are going to tell me the shocking fact that Vermont has the least number of grocery stores.

The article on this I think was supposed to be a feel good article for some people. I'd really like to see membership numbers because its a better way to size the scope of the issue. Wyoming sounded good in the article with only two groups, until I looked up the population. 585,501 in 2016.
I think its important to look at things in context. For grins I checked one state one would expect to be bad. Alabama. I was not disappointed. 27 groups in a population of 4.863 million. That equates to a hate group per roughly every 180,000 people.

I imagine North Dakota has fewer grocery stores than Vermont but IDNK and I will let the Haitian answer that for you, and I do not know which state has the fewest stores serving the highest numbers of customers available on a per cap basis

I am just dismayed by the number of people from Maine that went to that rally in VA. Shameful. I guess the question is were you surprised by the number? How about a per cap basis on total population? On the state map you only had three (too many) hate groups. Pretty good number compared to many states.

But, yes, you may be correct. I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Pretty good number compared to many states. I heard there were at least a couple dozen Mainers at that rally with the "Alt-Right". Not a lot. But too many. I don't want those people living amongst us. So you want some housing discrimination to occur. Where do you want them to live and why would that be fine for you? Or are they to be shipped to a small island somewhere? Maybe one of Obama's re-education Fema camps the right claimed were out there a few years ago Yes I know you were joking but still, what do we do with them? Telling them they have no right to speak hate does not fix a thing in the real world, nor telling them to move out of the state.
