I'm the one that drives the truck mostly, and I didn't want my bill to go up any worse by adding full coverage on the truck. It's worth about $7000.
I didn't know that hitting deer was covered by comp! We have deer, antelope, and huge-ass raccoons in our area. My daughter actually hit a huge jack rabbit in her car...it got wedged in the grill and her BF had to pull it out.
Also-I spoke with my agent today. He said that my rates are primarily to do with the ages of the kids. I checked into taking my son off...it's saves me $60 a month. Not bitching about $60, but I was expecting like $150.00. Gin, do you know how to read your policy Dec pages? Look at your Dec pages, it should have the vehicles listed, then it should tell you how much you are paying for coverage for that vehicle, it's pretty easy math, maybe getting your son off of the policy only saves you $60 (I doubt that a lot) but how much do you save by removing both the driver and the car?

How can removing your son only save you $60? Unless you mean it saves $60 while still adding the cost of his individual policy and yours together? Did they tell you what his policy would be on his own?
But still, that's $60 a month, $700/year. I would split them and hand his over to him to be all his.

Yeah, I know how to read them.
Dropping both my son and his car (turbo Dart) off drops the payment from $650 down to $592.00 a month on my own insurance. This is if he goes and gets his own. The $200/month is accurate. His quote from USAA is about $250.00/month.

I don't even pay that much in a year! My insurance is about $30 a month.

That is really messed up. He has full coverage and is probably the most expensive driver due to the tickets and his age/sex, why would it only lower yours $60?? Is one of the other three really expensive to insure for some reason? I would break it down by car and seriously consider dumping the one of the three that is costing the most. That is so much money to spend on insurance.

Like another poster suggested, check with a broker to see who they recommend. A local credit union here is also an insurance broker, and I have Adirondack insurance (I'm in NY state). My car insurance is a third what I was paying with State Farm. I like State Farm a lot, but they were getting seriously expensive.
Also, check into taking an online driver's test. The class costs around $30, and in NY state it will reduce your base premium by 10% for 3 years until you have to retake the test. Check with your agent to see if they offer a similar discount. Well worth it.

You know what it is? The younger driver, if you have cars that have full coverage they might be rating her on the most expensive car, which would be your son, the numbers still don't add up tho, how can it only go down $60.00 when he's costing you $200.00?

I wonder if it is the multiple vehicle discount? I can't imagine that it is that much that you are getting his car fully insured for $60.

I'll talk to a broker and see if there is anything they can do. Thanks all for the ideas. Holy hell though. Is anyone else forced to pay that kind of money for insurance?

Holy hell though. Is anyone else forced to pay that kind of money for insurance? Not even close, but only one vehicle/driver. I pay $55/month for full coverage on my van that probably isn't worth much. I've been talking with my insurance agent (State Farm) in anticipation of DS getting his license next year and they told me with the good student discount and going through their "Steer Clear" program DS being added to the van would increase my premium to $90/month. Without those discounts it would be $138/month.

No - and I have a teenage son driver and we're in a fairly expensive area to insure. We insure 2 luxury SUVs and a two year old Accord for myself, DH and 17 year old son for $3600 a year which I think is insane. Without the teen driver, the insurance on those 3 vehicles was about $2300 lower if I remember correctly, so about $1300 a year. But Geico must have a different ratings model or business strategy than the other insurers because as outrageous as our insurance is, it's about $2k less than it would have been with any of the other insurers. Again, it's the teen driver in our case. Without the teen driver, the insurance for DH and I was within a few hundred dollars at the various insurers; add in the dreaded teen and things got crazy quickly. With the teen driver, Geico was the only quote that was under $5k a year. It was obvious which companies are OK with teens and which don't want to underwrite that business.

My sister has 3 (23-18) drivers other than her self and her ex. Before they split, insurance on 4 cars ran around $550/mo. Insurance was only liability on 2 cars.

Check with Amica and Geico to see if their is lower. I need a new home insurance for a new house and called Amica, Geico, Erie, and State Farm. Geico has the lowest premium so I go with Geico and just paid the premium an hr ago. I used to have Geico but several yrs earlier they increased the premium even though I had no ticket/accident/claim so I switched to Erie. Now I'm going with Geico.

I checked with Geico and they came back with a great number. However, they only do property damage up to $100,000. I have to get an umbrella for more.
Not against getting an umbrella, but does anyone know why they won't go higher on the property damage?

I've never even had an agent try to push more than that. I do have umbrella coverage now because State Farm practically gave it to me, but I never did before.

They probably don't have a market for it. They're not really a company that more affluent people go after. Not that you have to be broke to use them. But Geico is more for the average Joe who is looking to save a few bucks. Less than affluent people have umbrellas all the time and usually take $100K for property damage because beyond that you're going to look to your umbrella that comes in increments of $1mil. When I write umbrellas for my clients I usually don't write PD limits higher than $100K because they have an umbrella for anything above that.

Never cared about having it before anyhow, but they sold it to me for $70/year. But seriously, would you really need more than 100K personal property protection? Isn't that just covering the cost of damage to the other vehicle? I suppose if you crashed into a car and then a house... But I would think 100K would cover the vast majority of accidents. It's the medical that you really can rack up the bills.

If you hit multiple vehicles or someone's house you would need more. I saw a car drive through a brick building. But you're right, the majority of claims are under the $100K limit. I only carry $100K for property damage with no umbrella.

My property damage goes up to $500k. I have $100k.
One brand new Lexus SUV is $70k. Tesla models run about the same. And then you get in multiple car accidents and the cost can go up. DS was the 3rd car in a 6 car pileup. 5 of the cars (including DS) were stopped at a light when someone plowed into them. Driver plus first 3 cars were all totaled. Of course, DS car was only worth $4k, if it had been worth a few thousand more it would have been repaired. But things like that can easily get you up to $100k.
